‘Expendables’ Continue Box Office Domination

Stallone and crew hold down the #1 spot for the second week in a row. By Mawuse Ziegbe Sylvester Stallone in “The Expendables” The Box Office Top 5 #1 “The Expendables” ($16.5 million) #2 “Vampires Suck” ($12.2 million) #3 “Eat Pray Love” ($12 million) #4 “Lottery Ticket” ($11.1 million) #5 “The Other Guys” ($10.1 million) “The Expendables” continues to spank the competition at the box office. The firepower-packed flick closed out the weekend with $16.5 million in ticket sales. The Sylvester Stallone ode to macho action movies has raked in a total of $64.9 million throughout its two-week run in theaters. “Vampires Suck” lagged behind “Expendables” with $12.2 million. The horror spoof, which takes several shots at pop-culture’s current fascination with smoldering, mortal-loving vampires, took the second-place slot. The film has stacked $18.6 million in ticket receipts since the comedy hit theaters on Wednesday. “Eat Pray Love” continued to cull a steady stream of theatergoers with a weekend draw of $12 million. “Vampires” just barely fended off the Julia Roberts vehicle, which settled into third place during its second week on screens. The weekend bumps “Love” ‘s total gross to $47.1 million. Boasting a rap-friendly cast, “Lottery Ticket” took fourth place during its debut weekend. The comedy, which features hip-hop star Bow Wow as a young fella forced to bat away hangers-on after he lands a winning lotto ticket, rang up $11.1 million in ticket scans. “The Other Guys” maintained a healthy presence at theaters, besting three new flicks for a top-five slot. The Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg cop comedy pulled in $10.1 million, bringing its overall haul to $88.2 million. In a weekend packed with new movies, three debuts failed to crack the top five. “Piranha 3D” nipped at “Guys” heels with $10 million for sixth place while “Nanny McPhee Returns” and “The Switch” struggled through the weekend with $8.3 million and $8.1 million, respectively. ‘The Expendables’ Cast Hits The New York Stock Exchange

Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren and Terry Crews rang the stock market’s opening bell on Thursday. By Eric Ditzian Cast of “The Expendables” at the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday Photo: Devan Pratt/MTV News If there’s one thing we learned from “The Expendables,” it’s that Sylvester Stallone and his crew of bomb-tossing hotshots can accomplish anything. So on Thursday morning (August 19), when Sly and his co-stars found themselves on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange at a time when unemployment is still high and debt is soaring, we had to wonder: What could The Expendables do to rescue the economy? Not a whole lot, apparently — even though their flick hauled in $35 million over the weekend. “We went to the bank; they turned down our credit,” Stallone laughed in an interview with MTV News. “So we thought we’d go to the source. That’s why we’re here. Not to promote a movie. It’s to get a house loan!” There was certainly no shortage of traders, analysts and slick-haired execs on hand to offer financial advice. After Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren and Terry Crews rang the exchange’s opening bell, the stars descended to the trading floor and were promptly swarmed. But Sly and his guys were happy for the attention, basking in the glow of having the #1 movie in the country. Stallone himself didn’t think it would turn out this way. “After the first day, you hope you can win,” he said. “Because I didn’t think we were going to win the weekend. We had some really tough competition with Julia [Roberts and ‘Eat Pray Love’]. But now, I don’t look at them anymore. I just look at how other people are doing. I don’t look at us. It’s kind of like a jinx.” “The people have spoken!” added an exuberant Crews. “They want the badassery! They need it. And they’ve spoken. That’s why it’s the #1 movie in America!”

The Sylvester Stallone-helmed vehicle, which was written and directed by Sly, was the #1 movie on Saturday with $11.8 million. The pulpy throwback to the firepower-packed ’80s films that Sly favored back in the day, was also the top draw at theaters on Friday as well. Featuring a cornucopia of muscled-up stars like Terry Crews and Mickey Rourke, the film is on track to own the entire weekend with an estimated $35 million in ticket sales. The big-screen version of Elizabeth Gilbert’s smash memoir, “Eat Pray Love, ” had a strong showing as well, pulling in $8.1 million. Droves of moviegoers checked out Academy Award-winning screen queen Julia Roberts munch and muse her way to enlightenment on Saturday and pushed the film to the #2 spot. “Love,” which also stars Javier Bardem and James Franco, held the second-place spot for the second night in a row after taking in $8.5 million on Friday. The film is expected to make $23.7 million over the weekend. “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” pulled in a modest $3.5 million on Saturday. The movie, which features Michael Cera as a determined beau ready to battle his new gal pal’s ex-boyfriends, continued to slog through the weekend as the third-place debut.
