EXCLUSIVE: Doc About Iconic ‘Continental’ Gay Bathhouse Gets Cheeky Poster

The poster for Small Town Gay Bar filmmaker Malcolm Ingram’s newest documentary, Continental , has been unveiled in time for its SXSW debut, and, well, it’s just the ticket for a look back at one of gay culture’s most iconic playgrounds of the late 1960s and 70s. Here’s the official synopsis: “Malcolm Ingram’s lively new documentary CONTINENTAL takes viewers back in time to the sexually charged New York of 1968, when the notorious Continental Baths opened its doors. This groundbreaking den of debauchery (advertised as a place “for sophisticated men only”) came to transcend sexual identity and became a cultural beacon to the hip, beautiful and infamous. Not only host to newly-empowered gay men of all shapes and sizes, eager to take full advantage of their sexual freedoms at a lavish venue, the Continental brought both high and low culture to the bathhouse’s stage week after week, becoming instrumental in the careers of ‘60s and ‘70s icons like Bette Midler , Barry Manilow , Patti LaBelle, Peter Allen and countless others. Those countless others included the late comic Andy Kaufman , confetti-tossing Jackass fixture Rip Taylor and cross-dressing proto-punkers The New York Dolls, and so many other performers who became regulars on TV variety and game shows during their heyday in the 70s. Ingram takes the journey with the club’s owner Steve Ostrow, members of his former staff and those who were present and actually remembered what happened. NY Veterans Screen Powerful ‘Happy New Year’ About G.I. Suicide

Post-traumatic stress syndrome and the epidemic of suicide among Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans are not exactly popular subjects with the military community — or  civilians, for that matter — but first-time filmmaker K. Lorrel Manning and actor/producer Michael Cuomo have made a tough, honest film that should spark plenty of debate over these issues.  On Monday evening, the duo’s movie Happy New Year  premiered in New York with a pair of special Veterans Week screenings and a reception at the Disney Screening Room on Park Avenue.   Movieline Managing Director Gerry Byrne, producer Fred Zollo and Help USA Chairman Maria Cuomo Cole hosted the event, which was attended by veterans, active duty personnel and their families. Michael Cuomo gives a searing performance in Happy New Year as a physically and emotionally scarred veteran who returns from combat in Iraq to find that an even tougher battle — to regain his health, his dignity and his sense of self — awaits him with little help from the government that sent him to war. After the screening, Manning told the crowd that a chance encounter with  Purple Hearts, Nina Berman’s book of photos of wounded Iraq war vets, inspired the film.  The director also explained that he wanted Happy New Year to be “an apolitical film” that would convince “other veterans to be okay with saying, ‘I’m not okay.'” The movie opens Dec. 7 in New York and Manning and Cuomo say they intend to eventually expand to other cities theatrically and via video on demand. One Of James Marsden’s Famous Friends Messed With His IMDb Bio

James Marsden is not a Barry Manilow fan, no matter what you may have read in his IMDb.com bio. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter , the Bachelorette actor explains that he’s the victim of “a famous actor friend of mine”  who “likes to go into other people’s bios and add things.” Marsden won’t identify the guy, but apparently, the wiseacre managed to get the usually reliable IMDb to embellish the Enchanted actor’s bio with the erroneous tidbit that Marsden was a big fan of the “Copacabana” crooner. As a result, Marsden has had to field frequent questions on the subject, most recently when Access Hollywood ‘s Billy Bush asked him about Manilow at the Napa Valley Film Festival on Nov. 9. A spokesperson for IMDb told THR that information submitted to the site “goes through a series of consistency checks before it goes live,”  but that given “the sheer volume of the information, occasional mistakes are inevitable, and, when reported, they are promptly fixed.” The Manilow reference does appear to have been removed from IMDb, but why do I feel like it’s only a matter of time before the bio bandit strikes again. Kelly Brook Is Classy Even Without A Bra

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a picture of Kelly Brook from this close up, I always thought she was just boobs and ass, but she’s actually a lot more glamorous than I thought. She’s a classy lady, a braless classy lady, I guess I’m going to have to change my strategy for picking this one up, a box of wine just isn’t going to cut it. Perhaps a bag of oysters, some Barry Manilow on the iPod , a nice bottle of Chateau Libido and a scenic drive through Amish country in mother’s mini van. I wonder if she has an iPod I could borrow. Call me.
