Emily VanCamp Covers InStyle, Talks Childhood and Love Life

Revenge star Emily VanCamp opens up about her childhood and her love life, and looks fabulous as always, in the April issue of In Style Australia. The actress, who grew up in a rural town in Ontario, recalled that her mom’s disciplinary measures include locking her and sisters out of the house. In freezing temperatures. “Are you kidding me?” she laughed. “We come from tough stock. It gets freezing but you’d just see little snowsuits running around. It was part of my childhood that shaped me.” Things are different now. If you watch Revenge online , you know that VanCamp’s namesake character Emily Thorne and Daniel Grayson, played by Josh Bowman, were once a thing. VanCamp and Bowman have been an item for a few years. Asked about her British beau, she offers a short and sweet, “I have a wonderful love in my life.” Besides her gig on the show, VanCamp last starred in the upcoming blockbuster sequel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier as Agent 13, Sharon Carter. Jimmy Kimmel Takes Lie Witness News to Music Festival, Hipsters Share Love For Fake Bands

Jimmy Kimmel revived his always-funny “Lie Witness News” segment last night, asking concert-goers about all the bands at the Rock the Bells 2013 festival. Bands that don’t exist, that is. Like the viral video gold he mined with the same bit at Coachella, Kimmel had a reporter would ask if they were excited to see a particular, bogus group. In typical hipster music-head fashion, the fans proclaimed their love or their distaste for some of the fake acts they were asked about … and even elaborated. Check out the priceless interviews below: Jimmy Kimmel Live – Lie Witness News (Rock the Bells 2013) The Rock the Bells 2013 festival is headlined by Wu-Tang Clan and Kid Cudi. Voldemore, Weasley, DJ Froyo should totally perform on one of the side stages, though. In other news … did you see Kanye West on Jimmy Kimmel Live the night before? That dude has a higher opinion of himself than any hipster music fan.

Race Matters: Ex-Gang Member Exonerated After Serving 19-Years In Prison!

Justice served? Thanks to a corrupt system and false testimonies , 37-year-old John Edward Smith has been in jail…serving 19 years of his TWO life term sentences for murder. What’s got us so angry about this case is the LAPD’s internal affairs department ignored polygraph tests and repeated reports made by the witness; admitting before and after the sentencing that he’d falsely accused Smith. According to the LA Times… “I had days when I was really frustrated, but I knew I couldn’t stop,” John Edward Smith said of his bid for release in a phone interview minutes after he walked out a free man. He said he was most dazed by the lights of downtown Los Angeles and Staples Center, and was looking forward to going home and hugging his grandmother. Smith said he was putting the details of his case out of his mind and focusing on the small steps to rebuild a life on the outside, like getting a driver’s license. During 19 years behind bars, Smith, a 37-year-old former gang member, adamantly maintained his innocence in the drive-by shooting, insisting that he was miles away at his grandmother’s house at the time of the crime. His claims went unheard until three years ago, when a fledgling wrongful convictions group, Innocence Matters, took his case and identified problems with the testimony of the lone witness to identify him as the killer. The man subsequently recanted and at a brief and raucous hearing Monday afternoon, a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge vacated his conviction. Smith’s relatives and friends erupted in cheers as Judge Patricia Schnegg, the supervising criminal judge, said she was setting aside the 1995 verdict because Smith’s conviction rested almost entirely on perjured testimony….The judge’s ruling came after the district attorney’s office completed its own yearlong investigation and determined that the witness, a high school student injured in the shooting, had lied on the stand. That teenager, Landu Mvuemba, told Smith’s lawyers that LAPD detectives had pressured him into the identification and that he had tried on a number of occasions over the years to alert authorities about his false statements. Smith offered the jury an alibi: He was with a girlfriend and two others at his grandmother’s house nearly three miles away. But the jury believed Mvuemba, convicting Smith of murder and attempted murder after three hours of deliberations. He was given two life sentences. Smith’s family, including his grandmother Laura Neal, firmly believed in his innocence. At one point, his grandparents mortgaged their house to pay an appellate law firm $65,000. Mvuemba said he soon regretted it and reported his concerns to LAPD internal affairs twice. He even told the courtroom bailiff as he prepared to take the witness stand, he said. No one did anything, he said. He and Smith later took polygraph tests. Both passed. Outside the courthouse, Smith’s grandmother, a frail women who uses a walker, said she had willed herself to stay alive until he was free. “There was a part of me that was in there too,” she said of his prison stay. “I am free now.” It’s sad that one false testimony can have such a heavy impact on your life. We’d like to think the LAPD might feel some repercussion after ignoring Mvuemba and other members of Smith’s family for so many years…but we know what kind of world we live in. Images via KTLA

Usher Wins Primary Custody of Two Children

It’s been long and it’s been ugly, but for Usher Raymond, it’s all been worth it: A judge has awarded the singer primary custody of the two children he shares with ex-wife Tameka Foster. The case has gone back and forth for months, with Foster alleging that Usher was an irresponsible father who took drugs in front of his kids. Accusations of infidelity, inattentiveness and a great deal of name-calling have also been tossed around by both sides. Usher even cried once on the witness stand. But the court has now sided with Usher and the former couple’s sons will spend a majority of time with their father. Foster will receive some custodial rights, but it’s unclear at the moment just how the arrangement will work. [Photo: WENN.com]

Cash Money Lets You Do ‘Whatever You Want,’ Kevin Rudolf Says

‘Don’t Give Up’ singer says working with the label is ‘like going to school with no homework.’ By Jocelyn Vena Kevin Rudolf Photo: Michael Caulfield/ Getty Images Considering that Kevin Rudolf has written enough pop songs for artists like Jesse McCartney and Leona Lewis, it comes as no surprise that he can craft a pop song for himself. The Cash Money artist dropped “Don’t Give Up” this week after he decided to embrace that lighter side for himself. “It’s the first song I wrote for the album. I wrote it right when I got to New York from L.A. I hadn’t really written a song for myself in a long time. I got really inspired. I left L.A. and I felt a thousand pounds were off my shoulders,” he said of the song, which will serve as his next album’s lead single. “This was a message I wrote to myself and in the end it reaches other people and makes them feel good. “Everyone’s trying to be edgy all the time and it’s not edgy anymore,” he later explained. “And I just wanted to have the courage to put something powerful into the world.” The upbeat track is full of folky bounce and handclaps that perfectly mirror the sunshine of the lyrics, where Rudolf sings, “So don’t give up, don’t look down/’Cause your time is gonna come around/ Don’t look back come to fall/ Baby, you were born to be a star.” Given that Rudolf has explored many other people’s pop personas in the past, forging his own was an interesting step to take. “It’s different. If I’m writing for the other artists, I’m focused on them and the subject matter and what’s going on in their lives. It just depends. Obviously if you’re gonna work on Selena Gomez you know you’re making an uptempo usually, usually more of a dance record, usually lighter subject matter, obviously,” he explained. “If I’m working with Lil Wayne, I know I’m making something that’s a lot harder, obviously making hip-hop, making beats more than I am writing a song necessarily,” he continued. “But usually the ones that just, like this one just came straight out, like I didn’t even write it, so that one, I knew it was for me. The more I got into it, I knew it was actually right. And then [Cash Money bosses] Slim and Baby heard it and then they felt the same way, so there we were.” Rudolf notes that being on a label like Cash Money affords him the opportunity to try out new sounds, without any objection from his superiors. “It’s like, being on Cash Money, it’s like going to school with no homework. It’s like you just show up and it’s awesome and you get to do whatever you want as long as you’re working and you’re creative and you’re contributing, they don’t care what you do,” he said. “I mean that in a great way. I don’t think you would get the artistry from Nicki Minaj and Wayne and Drake and all these people if you were being told what to do. There’s no way. And that’s why Cash Money has very creative artists. “They don’t have the filter that many record company A&R’s and label bosses have. They trust that you’re the artist,” he continued. “You don’t tell Wayne, ‘A little more energy in this part and less cursing,’ and if I have a day where I feel great and I want to write a song called ‘Don’t Give Up’ and share that with the world, then they’re all for it.” Related Artists Kevin Rudolf

Kristen Bell And Dax Shepard’s Relationship Inspires ‘Hit And Run’

‘The first year or so we were dating, we wrestled a lot with, you know, my past,’ says Shepard, who also wrote and directed the movie. By Kara Warner Dax Shepard in “Hit and Run” Photo: Open Road Films Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard are putting their love on the line, so to speak, for the sake of their upcoming action-packed R-rated comedy “Hit and Run.” The plot revolves around former getaway driver Charlie Bronson (Shepard), who busts out of the Witness Protection Program to drive his girlfriend (Bell) to Los Angeles so she can land her dream job. Their road trip becomes increasingly complicated and dangerous when they are chased by the feds (led by Tom Arnold) and later Charlie’s former gang of criminals (led by Bradley Cooper). When MTV News caught up with the fun-loving, real-life couple recently, they provided expert teasery and commentary as to why we’ll all be dying to see them onscreen together in the film. “The first year or so we were dating, we wrestled a lot with, you know, my past,” said Shepard, who also wrote and directed the movie. “Uncovering details of his sordid lifestyle,” Bell added. “The movie became a metaphor for that, for a couple dealing with people’s past,” Shepard explained. “So we put that in a car-chase movie.” “Of course,” Bell said with a smile. “Naturally, it’s such an easy fit,” Shepard agreed. “Where I am in Witness Protection and Kristen’s [character] is a professor.” “Of course,” Bell agreed again with a smile. “Naturally. And, you know, I have an even shadier past than I’ve really let on, and that kind of becomes obvious over the course of me trying to drive her to L.A.,” Shepard said. “The sh– hits the fan, basically, to sum it all up,” Bell offered. And if Shepard and Bell’s witty and pretty adorable repartee doesn’t entice you to check out “Hit and Run” when it hits theaters August 24, you should also know that there are a lot of fancy and fun cars in the film. “I play one of the supporting characters in the film,” Bell said. “The lead lady is played by Lady Lincoln, this 1967 Lincoln that Dax has … ” ” … sunk our savings [into],” Shepard admitted. “Yes, for years, [he] spent every paycheck on and put a lot of heart and soul into,” Bell added. “He put race-car bucket seats in, 5-point harnesses … ” ” … 700 horsepower,” Shepard cut in. “700 horsepower. I got this,” Bell said to Shepard. “It’s beautiful. There are a lot of cars in the movie.” “If you couldn’t bring 500 horsepower to the table, your vehicle was not invited to be in it,” Shepard said.
