Andrew Gillum Won’t Go High If Ron DeSantis Chooses To Go Low In Their Debate

T allahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum is prepared to return fire if his GOP rival for Florida governor Ron DeSantis wants to “go there” during their debate on Sunday night in Tampa, which CNN will air at 8 p.m. SEE ALSO: Andrew Gillum’s Support Extends Well Beyond The Black Community, Poll Shows “We waited 20 months or so for this moment when we’d get to compete in a contest of ideas about where we’re going to take the state of Florida,” said Gillum, who could become Florida’s first African-American governor. “Hopefully, we’ll be in for a good substantive conversation. I’ll do my best to keep it substantive. But I’ve warned you, if Mr. DeSantis wants to take it there, we’ll go there.” The CNN live stream will be available on  CNN.com  and on mobile devices through the network’s apps for iOS and Android. It can also be viewed on CNNgo . We just finished our walk through before the @CNN #FLGovDebate with @jaketapper . RT if you’ll be watching tonight at 8 PM ET. And if you’re ready to #BringItHome . pic.twitter.com/7Ged5uQUsT — Andrew Gillum (@AndrewGillum) October 21, 2018 From the opening bell in this contest, DeSantis showed his racist attitude toward Gillum. He warned Florida voters, less than 24-hours after winning the GOP nomination in August, not to “ monkey this up ” by electing Gillum. A closer look at his background revealed that DeSantis has a long racist history . Gillum wants to debate the merits of his progressive agenda for the state, which includes his proposals to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour, increase starting teacher pay to $50,000, expand Medicaid and ending the state’s infamous “stand your ground” law. DeSantis, if he decides to debate the issues, is expected to counter that Gillum would be fiscally irresponsible, weak on crime, and too open to immigration as governor—basically touting Trump’s “make American great again” agenda. Expect DeSantis also to accuse Gillum of corruption. Federal investigators are looking into whether businessmen were able to influence Tallahassee development projects. Gillum has said the FBI told him he’s not the focus of its investigation. However, the mayor reportedly took expensive trips that his political enemies believe were paid for by lobbyists. Gillum has reportedly presented receipts for those trips, and he’s cooperating fully with the investigation. Meanwhile, Trump has been lobbed attacks at Gillum on DeSantis’ behalf. Ron @RonDeSantisFL DeSantis is working hard. A great Congressman and top student at Harvard & Yale, Ron will be a record setting governor for Florida. Rick Scott gave him tremendous foundations to further build on. His opponent runs one of the worst & most corrupt cities in USA! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 20, 2018 But Gillum responded to the president and DeSantis in a dignified post. . @RonDeSantisFL is relying on @realDonaldTrump to help him win this race, but he doesn’t have what I have — and that’s people like you who have my back in this race. There’s Already A Petition For ‘Black Panther’ — But The Reason Why May Surprise You

Source: Marvel Studios / Marvel Studios Black Panther has received nothing but positive reviews about everything from the cinematography to the all star cast — and it hasn’t even hit theaters yet. The film’s success is a direct reflection of how the Black community has been waiting for a box office hit that reflects us as powerful, royal  and complete, as opposed to being someone’s slave. One Change.org user, Chaz Gormley , feels that Black Panther  is so important to the culture, he created a petition calling on Marvel Studios and The Walt Disney Company to invest 25 percent of the profits for the film into the black community. He added, “ Through a clever, well-manufactured marketing campaign Marvel Studios and their parent company The Walt Disney Company have targeted the Black community with their advertisements for the upcoming ‘Black Panther’ film, due to release on February 16, 2018. As marginalized groups have become more vocal, corporations and their savvy public relations departments have turned to catering to these groups – to turn a profit – and this film by Marvel Studios is no different. We cannot continue to recklessly support these conglomerates, allowing them to profit off of us without demanding something more than just their products in return.” Thus #BreakBreadMarvel was born. Airline Ticket Price Hikes Criticized As Exploiting Hurricane Evacuees

Read this article:

W ith the powerful winds of Hurricane Irma approaching Florida, some airlines are hiking ticket prices well beyond the budget of many seeking to escape the destructive storm,  CBS News reports. The outlet interviewed a Vermont man, Steve McQueen , who said he spent  $1,725 to fly his 87-year-old mother from Fort Myers, Florida to Charlotte, North Carolina on Thursday. He told CBS that he understands what happens with last minute ticket purchases but called the price “ghastly.”  Delta Airlines was publicly shamed when a prospective customer tweeted a price change  from $547.50 to $3,258.50 found on Expedia.com,  NBC News reported. Since that post went viral, others reported United Airlines and American Airlines for similar price hikes. Shame on you @delta . Jacking from $547 to over $3200 for people trying to evacute responsibly? #IrmaHurricane pic.twitter.com/O2nfPHQUAh — Leigh (@LeighDow) September 5, 2017 According to CBS, price gouging related to emergencies is illegal in Florida. That rule applies to hotels, gas stations and grocery stores–but not airlines. The federal government is responsible for regulating the airline industry. Exorbitant pricing complicates evacuation arrangements for students like Antonio Mercurius , an African American studies and health science major at the University of Miami. Mercurius told the  Miami Herald he felt “lucky” to have purchased his flight to the District of Columbia on Monday, before the hikes. The co-founder of the student poetry collective Speak How You Feel told reporters he was concerned about the safety of others who can’t afford the increased prices:  “Why is there no emergency evacuation cost? I understand supply and demand but the laws of capitalism should not operate in the times of catastrophic danger. What happens to the people that can’t afford flights now?” After public outrage over the “laws of capitalism,” some airlines began to change their tunes and prices. JetBlue set a $99 cap for direct flights out of Florida. American Airlines set a similar cap for outgoing flights. A spokesperson for Delta Airlines announced that it would adjust prices for last-minute flights, waive change fees, and accommodate more passengers with larger planes.
