Joely Richardson on Anonymous, Playing Elizabeth and the Trouble With Greenscreen

Sure, it’s a tough sell. But Anonymous has plenty going for it both behind the camera (director Roland Emmerich and screenwriter John Orloff posit the legitimacy of Shakespeare) and in front of it as well, where a sterling cast including Rhys Ifans , David Thewlis, Mark Rylance and the estimable mother-daughter combo of Vanessa Redgrave and Joely Richardson — playing Queen Elizabeth I some 40 years apart — dig into the historical, political and romantic intrigues with relish.

Twit Wit: 5 Best Tweets About Puss in Boots, In Time and Rum Diary

Between Puss in Boots , In Time , and Rum Diary , I didn’t see much reason to fork over $13 at the movies this weekend. (Though I did see Like Crazy — or as I like to call it, Jennifer Lawrence Thanklessly Pouts in a Supporting Role .) Instead of paying up, let’s read up on Twitter’s feelings about these three new films. Prepare to have mixed feelings about Justin Timberlake by the time we hit #1.

Read Terrence Malick’s 1979 Script Notes from the Tree of Life Precursor Qasida

When Paramount gave a post- Days of Heaven Terrence Malick $1 million, carte blanche, to make his next film, he began developing a highly ambitious project about the creation of life and the cosmos entitled Qasida (or, simply, Q ). Of course, the studio balked at the abstract Malick-ness of it all, the film stalled, and the director took the next two decades off from filmmaking. But! Now you can read Malick’s own Q script notes, circa 1979, and envision how his globe-trotting Q eventually morphed into this year’s Tree of Life .

Breaking: Naomi Watts and Matt Dillon to Star in Most Depressing Movie Ever

Word’s just in over the Movieline transom about what sounds certain to be the feel-good hit of 2013: Sunlight Jr. , the latest gritty indie drama from Sherrybaby director Laurie Collyer. This has everything : Naomi Watts as a pregnant, laid-off convenience-store worker! Matt Dillon as her paraplegic boyfriend! “A generational cycle of poverty and ignorance!” All that’s missing in the press release is an invitation to the inevitable Sundance premiere after-party sponsored by Kleenex. Or Xanax. Or both.

Friday Box Office: Puss Swashbuckles to First; Paranormal Plunges

Barring a Texas Rangers-esque collapse today and tomorrow, America’s favorite spun-off Spanish feline with a sword will scamper away with the weekend’s box-office crown: Puss in Boots easily knocked off Paranormal Activity 3 , which slid some 70 percent off last Friday’s blistering pace. In other news, Justin Timberlake and Johnny Depp opened soft and Anonymous had a Bard time (sorry) on around 250 screens. Your Friday Box Office is here.

An unnamed Expendables 2 stunt performer was killed while filming an explosion scene Thursday in Bulgaria. Another stuntman was critically injured in the scene, which was being handled by the second-unit crew while director Simon West and his cast were shooting several hours away. “It is with great regret that we confirm this unfortunate accident,” said a statement from the producers at Nu Image/Millennium Films. “Our hearts go out to the families and those on the production affected by this tragedy. The filmmakers are working closely with the authorities in responding to and investigating this accident.” [ Deadline ]

Kristen Wiig, Judd Apatow and Co. Offer 9 Things You Didn’t Know About Bridesmaids

For the first time since Bridesmaids premiered this past spring, the comedy’s filmmakers and cast gathered last night in Hollywood for a special Screen Actors Guild Awards screening of their surprise box office smash. Afterward, Judd Apatow (who executive produced the film) moderated a Q&A panel comprised of stars Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy and Wendi McLendon-Covey as well as Annie Mumolo, who co-wrote the screenplay with Wiig. What transpired was an entertaining discussion about the movie “that changed female comedy.” The most exciting revelations follow.
