Kathryn Bigelow’s Bin Laden Thriller Moves Out of Controversial Pre-Election Slot

Kathryn Bigelow ‘s upcoming movie about the team of Navy SEAL s who killed Osama bin Laden was originally set to debut right before election day 2012, prompting U.S. Rep. Peter King (R-NY) to call for an investigation of the extent of the Obama administration’s assistance to the project. Now, that point seems moot; Sony has rejiggered its release schedule so that the Mark Boal-penned picture will debut after the Presidential election, and possibly not until 2013. Then again, with today’s news of Muammar Gaddafi’s death , Obama might not need as much help raising the victory flag, pre-election. [ NYT ]

Mysterious Jupiter Ascending Project Could Be the Wachowskis’ Next Matrix

After their Matrix trilogy grossed over $1.5 billion worldwide, Lana (formerly Larry) and Andy Wachowski took some time to explore avenues off the sci-fi blockbuster grid — by writing a dystopian thriller ( V for Vendetta ), unsuccessfully adapting Japanese anime for the screen ( Speed Racer ) and directing A-listers like Tom Hanks, Hugh Grant and Halle Berry in the ambitious, generations-spanning adaptation of David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas . At long last though, it seems that the sibling filmmakers are returning to their wheelhouse for a mysterious new project called Jupiter Ascending .

Christian Bale Plays Another Kind of Uniformed Hero in the The Flowers of War Trailer

How does Christian Bale occupy himself between Batman movies ? Apparently by filming Chinese historical war dramas like The Flowers of War (previously titled The 13 Flowers of Nanjing ), which finds the actor playing another kind of hero in black — an American priest who helps Chinese escapees dodge death during the Nanking Massacre. Not sexy enough for you? There is probably more graphic violence (including execution-style kills), impassioned screaming, Christian Bale facial hair styles (I counted three!) and sex with prostitutes in this trailer than in all of Dark Knight Rises .

Is Attack the Block Getting an Awards Season Campaign?

Awards screeners have yet to really start coming in (a few have already been sent out, including Sony Pictures Classics’ Take Shelter , The Guard , and Higher Ground , and Summit’s A Better Life ), but this week’s arrival of Attack the Block DVD screeners is a surprise entry to the season. The Sony/Screen Gems-released sci-fi pic was sent out to members of the L.A. Film Critics Association this week, although it’s unclear how much of a campaign the studio plans, if any. Does the British kid-oriented genre film have a shot at awards season, anyway?

John Travolta Doesn’t Understand How KFC Works

According to The Daily Mail, last Friday while in West Sussex, England for an annual Scientology event, John Travolta reportedly asked one of his reps to reserve a table at the local KFC for him and his guests. The KFC employee who answered the phone kindly explained to the actor’s rep that fast food chains operate on a first come-first serve basis, even if the customer was John Travolta. The actor never got his table or his fried chicken, instead going directly to a charity dinner. A spokesman for KFC has since released a statement about the Travolta debacle: “In hindsight, of course, we would have reserved a table for him. It’s not every day you get a Hollywood star eating in your restaurant.” [ Daily Mail ]

REVIEW: Tense, Timely Margin Call Evokes Occupy Wall Street Outrage

Margin Call isn’t the first film to peer into the moneyed, aspirationally heartless world of finance, and it’s not going to be the last, but it’s got a fair shot at being the one with the most masterful timing. J.C. Chandor ‘s feature debut aims to offers insight into the mindset of bankers poised to plunge the country into the 2008 economic crisis because of their own reckless conduct, and it reaches screens as Occupy Wall Street has spread across the U.S. and internationally, fueled in part by outrage about a lack of accountability in the financial and corporate world. The film’s not an indictment or a satire — it’s a tense but contemplative exploration of being on the other side of one of those mirrored skyscraper windows, of being in a precarious place of privilege, power and, most important of all, carefully guarded remove.
