WATCH: ”The Hangover III’ Trailer − Justin Bartha Sidelined Again?

The Hangover Part III   Director Todd Phillips has said that the final installment of his trilogy will focus on Zach Galifianakis’  character, Alan . Who it won’t be about, apparently — at least in terms of screen time — is Justin Bartha’s character Doug .  Here’s what the plot looks like based on the trailer: After the death of his father, Alan goes off the rails — and his meds — engaging in the kind of outlandish behavior that, actually, he engaged in when he was on his meds. But that’s not the point.  The point is that the Wolfpack joins forces one more time to take their troubled pal to a place called New Horizons that will make him all better, and..hoo boy, cue trouble in the form of menacing dudes in cute pig masks and a scary gangster-looking guy played by John Goodman . Goodman, his character doesn’t have a name in IMDb’s credits, is looking for Mr. Chow ( Ken Jeong )  and kidnaps Doug as an incentive for Phil ( Bradley Cooper ), Stu ( Ed Helms ) and Alan to track him down. Since the focus will inevitably turn to the remaining trio’s attempts to track down Chow and save Doug, it looks like Bartha (in the foreground of the photo on the right) is going to sit out most of the movie yet again.  (I wonder how he feels about that.) It also looks like there won’t be any moment where the Wolf Pack wakes up in a bizarre setting and must piece together how they got there. The use of that plot point in both the first Hangover and Part II is one of the things that had critics and moviegoers grousing about the by-the-numbers similarity of the first two movies. Not that it affected the box office:    According to Box Office Mojo , The Hangover has grossed more than $467 million worldwide.  Part II has Hoovered in more than $581 million. If Part III can maintain that momentum, the question of whether its plot is enough of a departure from the first two movies will be moot. UPDATED: Now That ‘Point Break’ Has A Director, Where’s The Remake Of Kathryn Bigelow’s ‘Near Dark’?

While the blogosphere debates the merits and drawbacks of Alcon hiring Ericson Core ( Invincible ) to direct its remake of Point Break ,   it’s time to  start asking if   Kathryn Bigelow’s   1987  neo-noir  vampire thriller Near Dark   will ever be remade.  UPDATED/ 7:45 P.M. EST:    Relativity Media spokeswoman Emmy Chang responds, “We do not have the rights to this title.”   Stay tuned. Let me say up front that Near Dark doesn’t need to be remade. It’s a bloody, balls out thrill ride that pre-figures the endorphin rush of Point Break features a memorable cast that includes the seriously underrated Lance Henriksen and Bill Paxton . Henriksen is utterly chilling and Paxton gives an unhinged performance as Severen , the craziest member of a pack of redneck vampires on the loose in the West. (Love their shades and the camper van with the blacked-out windows.) Is Near Dark Too Much Like  Twilight ?  Back in 2006, Michael Bay ‘s Platinum Dune production company was talking about remaking the picture, but in 2008, Bay’s partner, producer Brad Fuller told Empire magazine that the project was on hold because “I’m concerned that, conceptually… Near Dark and Twilight are too similar”.  I had to read that statement twice because, while there is a romance between one of the vampire clan (Jenny Wright) and a murder-averse human (Adrian Pasdar),  the ferociously over-the-top Near Dark bears precious little resemblance to the PG-13 Twilight  franchise.  (If anything, Bigelow’s film is a kindred spirit of HBO’s True Blood vamp series.)  If Bay & Co. were making a Twilight connection, it’s probably best they shelved the project. As of the end of 2012, the Internet Movie Database indicated that Relativity Media subsidiary Rogue was developing the picture, but getting the company to confirm that the project is still alive (or undead) is another question. Relativity reps have yet to respond to my requests for clarity on the matter.  If they get back to me, I’ll update. In the meantime, if a remake ever does get made, I’d love to see Michael Shannon as Severin role and Christopher Walken in the patriarchal Jesse Hooker role that Henriksen played. Here’s the official trailer to the film followed by a clip of Paxton at his bloody best. Genuine Affleck-tion! ‘Argo’ Is The Best Picture To Beat

Two weeks after carrying home the big prizes from the Critics’ Choice and Golden Globe Awards , Argo firmly established its Oscar front-runner status with another one-two punch in the form of the PGA’s Motion Picture Producer of the Year honor and the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast. And in a season of confusion and contradiction, that front-runner status gives Argo traction that none of its Best-Picture rivals have. The PGA win was not a surprise, especially after Argo ’s strong showing with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Content-wise, it’s the type of film that charms producers, being a taut political thriller 65% of the time and a stack of insider Hollywood jokes the other 35%. Apart from that, you have The Affleck, and the time has come to love and praise The Affleck . Rejuvenated and relevant again, Ben Affleck is this year’s Oscar story. When the nominations came out, who was the “snubbed” director? It wasn’t Kathryn Bigelow , Paul Thomas Anderson , or Wes Anderson , the three directors whose films appeared on the most end-of-year lists. It was The Affleck, and within 72 hours, The Affleck was redeemed with populist awards broadcast live on the CW and NBC, making Argo the People’s Film and Affleck the Oscar story of the year. For Best Picture prognostication, the PGA Award is a major get. Since it was started in 1989, the Producers Guild has awarded the eventual Best Picture Oscar winner nearly 70 percent of the time, and has been perfect over the past 5 years. Additionally, the PGA uses a preferential ballot just as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has done since 2009. What this means is that Argo and Affleck do not need to top all ballots, they just need to be agreed upon by most ballots. I don’t have scientific findings to present here, but think about the conversations you’ve had about the Best Picture nominees:   Lincoln , Les Misérables,     Django Unchained , and Silver Linings Playbook are much more polarizing than the crowd-pleasing Argo .  For what it’s worth, Argo also has the highest Rotten Tomatoes score of all the nominees, 96, followed by Zero Dark Thirty , 93, and Amour , 92. The movie’s SAG win was more of a surprise. Argo is not an Actor’s Movie. This is not to say the award was not earned, simply that most of the attention was divided between the flashy Les Mis and the kitchen sink acting of Silver Linings Playbook . But there’s that word: “divided.” The Screen Actors Guild is a massive organization of nearly 160,000 members (though only current on dues are eligible to vote), so while theater types might have leaned toward Les Mis and classically-trained types might have opted for Silver Linings or Lincoln , the one film the Guild ended up agreeing on was Argo and its Affleck-led cast. It was, in a word, the most popular. (Keeping with the populist theme, note how the SAG Awards are the only guild awards that appear on billboards). SAG has a terrible track record with Best Picture. The two top awards aligned less than half of the time since SAG started their awards in 1995. But this is a season when stats mean less than they would normally. The film with the most Oscar nominations is no longer the film to beat. Harvey Weinstein , who put Affleck on the Oscar map with the 1997 movie Goodwill Hunting, is fighting an uphill battle. There’s a legitimate front-runner in town, and it does not have the director’s nomination assumed necessary. (And I’m not talking about Django Unchained .) This season, the Best Picture race is all about tone and attitude, and Argo  and its affable director are all about tone and attitude. Affleck is an A-lister once again, charming every room he enters — his jokes won the room at the PGA breakfast Saturday morning — and his film’s recent run of awards-season honors have made its Best Picture prospects impossible to ignore. After months of having several films on the radar, there is finally one at the center of it. John Hendel is a playwright from Los Angeles. Follow John Hendel on Twitter. Amy Poehler Reveals Who Wrote Her James Cameron Torture Joke For The Golden Globes

I’ve noted this a few times now, but of all the jokes that Tina Fey and Amy Poehler told during their killer Golden Globes performance , the one that resonated most with me was their jab at Avatar director James Cameron :  “I haven’t been following the controversy surrounding  Zero Dark Thirty , ” Poehler said name-checking director  Kathryn Bigelow . “But when it comes to torture, I trust the woman who spent three years married to James Cameron.” I loved the joke because it was daring — a tough one to pull off in an industry crowd that tends to protect its own even when they may despise that person behind his back. ( Jessica Chastain’s televised gasp said volumes.)  Poehler pulled it off beautifully and, in an interview that was posted on Friday in The Huffington Post , she finally revealed the author of the joke. The Parks and Recreation actress and her series co-star and Adam Scott t alked to the site about  the movie that they premiered at Sundance,  A.C.O.D ., which stands for Adult Children of Divorce, and in the process, Poehler revealed that the Cameron line was the work of 30 Rock writer Sam Means . Here’s the excerpt that appears on HuffPo. You did a great job co-hosting the Golden Globes. Scott:  Didn’t she? Poehler:  Thank you. I do feel that you may have been taken off the short list for “Avatar 2.” Poehler: [Laughs.]  Perhaps! Perhaps. Not just with the James Cameron joke, but anytime you do a joke like that, can there be repercussion? Or do people take that in stride? Poehler:  I  hope  so. There was nothing in that moment that we walked away from feeling bad about. There was never a moment that we walked away going, “Was that too … ” You know, we vetted our own jokes with each other. Tina and I have had a lot of experience doing those kind of jokes, so we know when things feel too “something.” That room was a special kind of room, so we had to think about how to play to that room. So, we didn’t regret anything that we had said or felt like we were coming in a weird way. And if it’s funny, you can get away with a lot, hopefully. Scott:  And I was saying before, James Cameron … even  he  has to appreciate what a beautifully crafted joke that was. Poehler:  Written by a gentleman named Sam Means — a writer for “30 Rock.” He wrote that joke. I’m assuming there was no hesitation when you heard that joke. Poehler:  Oh, no. It’s a  great  joke. Good work, Mr. Means.  Now, if you happen to notice a non-descript black van following you, here’s a little advice: run. REVIEW: Feral Kid Horror ‘Mama’ Is Jessica Chastain’s Best Performance Yet

In Tree of Life , Jessica Chastain played a mother who could float. In Mama , she’s attacked by one. Chastain shot this dignified little thriller in fall 2011 during the stretch when literally every arthouse theater played at least two of her pictures—between Tree , Coriolanus , The Help , Take Shelter , Texas Killing Fields and The Debt , she was indie cinema’s inescapable new queen. Universal intended to release the Guillermo del Toro -produced Mama last October, but shelved it until the week after Chastain was nominated for an Oscar for Zero Dark Thirty . Is this her reputation-besmirching Norbit ? Pshaw — for my money, it’s her best performance yet. Mama starts with a child’s hand scrawling “Once upon a time,” words that send us all the way back to, uh, the financial collapse of 2008. A Wall Street bigshot (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) has a nervous breakdown: He shoots his co-workers, shoots his wife, and kidnaps his two girls, ages 3 and 1, with the intent of hiding out and shooting them, too. (Alas, murder-suicide is today’s version of parents in the Brothers Grimm casting out their children to survive in the forest.) The place he chooses to pull the trigger is a cabin in the woods that belongs to “Mama,” a ghost who doesn’t take kindly to deadly dads. Side note: Why is Hollywood newly obsessed with monsters who are painfully thin and flexible? It’s as if our entire generation grew up having nightmares about a double-jointed Karen Carpenter. As the opening credits roll, kiddie crayon sketches show us what happened next: The scared blonde tykes cling to their new ghost mommy and revert to crawling on all fours and eating rats. It’s a feral child fairy tale! Cut to the present where we first meet rocker girl Annabel (Chastain) beaming at an EPT test, overjoyed that her boyfriend (Coster-Waldau again) hasn’t gotten her pregnant. Alas, her guy turns out to be the girls’ uncle, and his detectives have finally found Mama’s lair. Surprise! Annabel’s about to be the adopted mother of two crab-walking nightmares, and she really doesn’t want to meet their babysitter. Every beat in Mama is familiar, down to the exact moment you need to close your eyes to dodge a jump-scare, and there’s a goofy child psychiatrist (Daniel Kash) whose actions make about as much sense as Claire Danes in Homeland . But damned if Mama doesn’t transcend its nonsense. As in Paranormal Activity 3 , the girls — now 6 and 8, but psychologically closer to wildcats in captivity — spend a lot of time in their bedroom playing tug-of-war with their spooky spectral caretaker and humming creepy hymns. Young actresses Isabelle Nelisse and Megan Charpentier are excellent, with Nelisse frighteningly primal, and Charpentier as her guilt-stricken and watchful older sister. The best call in the script is the slow wedge that’s driven between the girls, the real world, and the world only they believe in. The kids are scary but they don’t thrill to see Chastain scream. Instead, their loyalty is torn between the only mother they’ve ever known and, you know, the one who doesn’t look like an anorexic hellbeast. One standout chase sequence shows us Mama’s back story in a retro filmstrip style that looks like one of D.W. Griffith’s nightmares. But Mama ‘s smartest choice is the decision by helmer Andres Muschietti (who also co-wrote the script with Barbara Muschietti and Neil Cross) to cast Chastain for insta-class. Chastain has carved out a career in shockingly fast time, but she’s been oddly ill-used by her directors, who tend to see her as a figurehead, not a woman. She’s been shoehorned into archetypes: The fragile doll, the vision of womanly perfection, the sexless drone. It takes this slight but ambitious horror flick to let her be flesh-and-blood fun. Her Annabel is a tough, short-haired dame who’s inked with tattoos under her Misfits t-shirts. She plays guitar in a ’90s-esque girl band — god, I wish we had more of those today — and her cellphone voicemail barks: “This is Annabel. Leave a message at the beep. Fuck you — beep .” As she warms, slowly, to the beast-children, Chastain gets to play an arc, not an archetype, and Mama becomes an honest-to-god film instead of a quickie horror cash-in or a bone-dry drama that relies on Chastain to do all the heavy lifting. Kathryn Bigelow , take note: Surround Chastain with an actual movie, and you might get a Oscar nod the next go-round. Amy Nicholson is a critic, playwright and editor. WATCH: The Best Of Tina Fey & Amy Poehler’s Golden Globes Performance

Aspiring awards-show hosts, do I have a training video for you.  Here, in one sweet video-clip compilation, is a highlight reel of Tina Fey  and Amy Poehler’s pitch-perfect performance at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday. Included are Poehler’s lines about the “beautiful people of film rubbing shoulders with the rat-faced people of television,” Les Miserables  actress  Anne Hathaway not being cut out for porn, and  Fey’s warning to singer/songwriter  Taylor Swift to “stay away from Michael J. Fox’s son,” Sam.     This nicely edited clip, which was posted by The Guardian in the U.K.,  also features audience reaction to the jokes.  You get to see Jessica Chastain’s  gasp after  Poehler does the joke about Zero Dark Thirty director Kathryn Bigelow  understanding torture because of her three-year marriage to James Cameron. And Daniel Day-Lewis plays along by extending his index finger when Poehler and Fey tell the audience that the method actor actually worked for Steven Spielberg before Lincoln when he played E.T.  There’s even a bonus shot of Tommy Lee Jones scowling, which makes this video a must-have for any awards-show aficionado’s collection.  My only regret is that the video doesn’t include the shot of Poehler cuddling with George Clooney .  Check it out below, but put down the coffee cup first or you’ll be doing a spit take like Quentin Tarantino .
