Seriously?! Man Gets Charged With 1993 Murder After Police Get His DNA Off A Napkin In The Trash

Source: Simon McGill / Getty Big Brother is ALWAYS watching…but I guess that’s something you should probably expect if you’re a murderer. A man in Minnesota was just charged with murder after investigators matched his DNA from a napkin he threw out at his daughter’s hockey game to evidence that they had on file. Now, 25 years later, 52-year-old Jerry Westrom was linked to the 1993 stabbing death of Jeanne Ann Childs after cold case investigators compared samples from the scene to a public genealogy database. Even though the case was closed years ago following a lack of evidence, it had been reopened in 2015 in light of advances in DNA screening technology. Investigators sent these samples from the scene to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and a DNA testing company; The samples turned up Westrom’s name after being compared to data on the public DNA database, GEDmatch. That match meant that either Westrom or a close relative of his had used the website. From there, they used that information as the basis to look into Westrom’s online presence, which is where the whole napkin thing comes in. They proceeded to follow the 52-year-old based on where he said he was going to be and ended up recovering a napkin that he used at a game in Wisconsin back in January. According to authorities, they said that the lightbulbs went off that they should use the database after a similar method was used to capture the Golden State Killer, a case that has completely obsessed detectives and true crime fanatics for decades. “We all learned quite a bit from the Golden State Killer,“ said Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman told  Minneapolis’ WCCO . Freeman explained that the way they went about obtaining the sample was entirely legal. “When you discard things in the trash, the Supreme Court often says it’s free game,” Freeman said. “And so he discarded the napkin in a container and threw it in the trash, so they could get it.” Even though DNA evidence certainly doesn’t lie, Westrom has continued to deny the allegations and is currently free after paying his $500,000 bail. So, what’s the moral of the story here? Think before you send your spit swabs into those ancestry sites, people. Or just don’t go to any basketball games…Especially if you were out here committing crimes approximately 25 years ago. How do you feel about the police digging into the garbage to test out DNA?!

Nosy Nurses: Dozens Of UCLA Medical Center Employees To Be Fired For Diggin Into Kanye’s Medical History

UCLA Hospital To Fire Employees Trying To Access Kanye West’s Medical History Medical professionals are sworn to a solemn vow of privacy and ethics when it comes to protecting their patients and their personal information. That said, when a A-list celebrity like Kanye West goes nuts and enters the hospital for treatment, even the most faithful practitioner might be tempted to violate. Enter the staff at the UCLA Medical Center. According to TMZ , “several dozen” employees will lose, or already have lost, their jobs due to a major security breach that the hospital is not taking lightly. The brass at the hospital noticed that many of their employees attempted to access the database where personal information is kept in order to gain access to Kanye’s file. It can be surmised that at least SOME of them were looking to cash in by selling information to magazines or blogs. Some of them were probably just being too damn nosy for their own good. In either case the hospital is conducting an investigation and heads will roll. Sure hope it was worth it…SMH. Image via Splash

UPDATED: Now That ‘Point Break’ Has A Director, Where’s The Remake Of Kathryn Bigelow’s ‘Near Dark’?

While the blogosphere debates the merits and drawbacks of Alcon hiring Ericson Core ( Invincible ) to direct its remake of Point Break ,   it’s time to  start asking if   Kathryn Bigelow’s   1987  neo-noir  vampire thriller Near Dark   will ever be remade.  UPDATED/ 7:45 P.M. EST:    Relativity Media spokeswoman Emmy Chang responds, “We do not have the rights to this title.”   Stay tuned. Let me say up front that Near Dark doesn’t need to be remade. It’s a bloody, balls out thrill ride that pre-figures the endorphin rush of Point Break features a memorable cast that includes the seriously underrated Lance Henriksen and Bill Paxton . Henriksen is utterly chilling and Paxton gives an unhinged performance as Severen , the craziest member of a pack of redneck vampires on the loose in the West. (Love their shades and the camper van with the blacked-out windows.) Is Near Dark Too Much Like  Twilight ?  Back in 2006, Michael Bay ‘s Platinum Dune production company was talking about remaking the picture, but in 2008, Bay’s partner, producer Brad Fuller told Empire magazine that the project was on hold because “I’m concerned that, conceptually… Near Dark and Twilight are too similar”.  I had to read that statement twice because, while there is a romance between one of the vampire clan (Jenny Wright) and a murder-averse human (Adrian Pasdar),  the ferociously over-the-top Near Dark bears precious little resemblance to the PG-13 Twilight  franchise.  (If anything, Bigelow’s film is a kindred spirit of HBO’s True Blood vamp series.)  If Bay & Co. were making a Twilight connection, it’s probably best they shelved the project. As of the end of 2012, the Internet Movie Database indicated that Relativity Media subsidiary Rogue was developing the picture, but getting the company to confirm that the project is still alive (or undead) is another question. Relativity reps have yet to respond to my requests for clarity on the matter.  If they get back to me, I’ll update. In the meantime, if a remake ever does get made, I’d love to see Michael Shannon as Severin role and Christopher Walken in the patriarchal Jesse Hooker role that Henriksen played. Here’s the official trailer to the film followed by a clip of Paxton at his bloody best. Guinness World Records Responds To Jack White’s ‘Elitist’ Claims

Guinness spokesperson explains why they refused to recognize a White Stripes show as ‘the shortest concert of all time.’ By James Montgomery Jack White Photo: WireImage Over the years, Jack White has taken umbrage with overzealous radio programmers , the Internet and, uh, Jason Stollsteimer (to name just a few) but in the new issue of Interview magazine, he lashes out at a new foe: The folks at Guinness World Records. Yes, in what could only be described as the latest step in his ongoing transformation into the music world’s foremost eccentric — sorry, Kanye — White has lashed out at the venerable record-keeping institution, calling them “a very elitist organization” after they refused to acknowledge the White Stripes’ one-note performance in Newfoundland (seen in their 2010 doc “Under Great White Northern Lights” ) as “the shortest music concert ever.” “I was thinking that afterwards we could contact the Guinness World Records people and see if we could get the record for the shortest concert of all time. So we did it, but ultimately, they turned us down,” White tells astronaut Buzz Aldrin (for real) in the Interview piece. “[They’re] a very elitist organization. There’s nothing scientific about what they do. They just have an office full of people who decide what is a record and what isn’t … so something like the shortest concert of all time, they didn’t think [it] was interesting enough to make it a record. I don’t know why they get to decide that, but, you know, they own the book.” Well, yes, they do own the book … and, as it turns out, the Stripes’ Newfoundland concert was featured in the 2009 edition of it, as a spokesperson for Guinness World Records pointed out to MTV News on Thursday (May 17). Of course, they’d subsequently remove the notation in later editions, though it had little to do with elitism and more to do with the simple fact that Guinness had no way of qualifying what actually counted as a performance. “We received a large volume of applications from bands and performers seeking to beat this record. We got an influx of individuals claiming that simply appearing on stage was enough to qualify them for this record,” the spokesperson wrote in an email to MTV News. “It became increasingly difficult for us to measure this objectively (for example, how many members of the crowd need to be able to see the performer before they disappear off stage?) “The nature of competing to make something the ‘shortest’ by its very nature trivializes the activity being carried out, and Guinness World Records has been forced to reject many claims of this kind,” the spokesperson continued. “As such, we have closed record categories for similar designations such as the shortest song, shortest poem, and also the record of shortest concert currently in question.” Of course, the spokesperson was quick to add that Guinness World Records “admires the band and we encourage them to attempt any of the 40,000 active records currently housed in our database.” And knowing White, we’re pretty sure he’ll take them up on that offer. Billionaire Jeffrey ’14′ Epstein: “I’m Just A Sex Offender, Not A Predator”

This guy only chops down young tenders… and we are talking some 12 yrs of age: Billionaire pervert is back in New York City — and making wisecracks about his just-ended jail stint for having sex with an underage girl. “I’m not a sexual predator, I’m an ‘offender,’ ” the financier told The Post yesterday. “It’s the difference between a murderer and a person who steals a bagel,” said Epstein. Epstein’s flippant reasoning aside, a New York judge ruled at a hearing last month that the moneyman is the most dangerous kind of sex offender: a Level 3. That means, according to the state, Epstein is at “high risk” to repeat his offense and poses “a threat to public safety.” But Epstein doesn’t seem bothered by the designation. “The crime that was supposedly committed in Florida is not a crime in New York,” he said. Epstein recently returned to his $50 million East 71st Street mansion and celebrated his release from a Florida jail with his close pal, Britain’s Prince Andrew. Epstein served 13 months of an 18-month sentence for soliciting a minor for prostitution. In court papers, the victim was identified as a 14-year-old girl. At one point, Epstein was facing 10 years to life on multiple counts of statutory rape, according to investigators. Court documents in that case claimed he routinely sought out girls as young as 14 and paid them $200 to $1,000 for sexual massages in his homes in Palm Beach, Fla., and Manhattan. He also molested girls he had brought in from South America and Europe and once was given three 12-year-old girls from France as a “birthday gift,” the documents alleged. Epstein struck a secret nonprosecution deal with the feds. The government agreed to drop its probe of various sex-crime allegations if Epstein copped to prostitution felonies in Florida state court. But in New York’s sex-offender database, Epstein doesn’t come up in a ZIP code search. He shows up only via the “name search” option, and no New York address is listed. That’s because Epstein’s Upper East Side home is considered “temporary.” By state law, he is required to provide only his permanent address to the database, and Epstein listed his Florida home. His sickness is only outdone by his wealth… which is why he is still free, right? Source
