Source: Barry King / Getty So Kobe Bryant is really turning 40 years old today .   It’s hard to think that one of the greatest athletes of all time is not a young whipper snapper anymore.   Kobe officially announced his retirement from the NBA in 2016 after winning five championships and going to 18 All-Star Games with the Lakers. Before his last official game, he wrote a letter to his fans saying: “My heart can take the pounding, my mind can handle the grind, but my body knows it’s time to say goodbye. You gave a six-year-old boy his Laker dream, and I’ll always love you for it. But I can’t love you obsessively for much longer.” Kobe has been many people’s favorite player since entering the league in 1996. We’ve seen hip, young Kobe. #BlackGirlMagic! Ariyana Davis Accepted Into 23 HBCUs A Chicago high schooler’s inspiring story is making national headlines. Ariyana Davis, of Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School, has been accepted into every one of the 24 colleges she applied to. Twenty-three of those schools were historically black colleges and universities including most recently Spelman College. The last school was Eastern Illinois University, a predominantly white institution. Looks like there's another achievement that needs to be celebrated because…. Cuba Gooding Jr. Gets Wasted, Curses Off Awards Show

Cuba Gooding Jr. may have won critical praise for his portrayal of O.J. Simpson on this year's FX minseries, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. But the actor is a different kind of juiced in the clip below. It was filmed at at something called the Footwear News Achievement Awards, which held this past Tuesday in New York City. Gooding was on hand to present the Social Impact Award to designer friend John Varvatos. Sounds simple enough, right? But the former Oscar winner, by his own admission, had a tad too much to drink prior to taking the stage… and proceeded to give us one of the more memorable awards introductions of the year. “Nothing says I love you like f-cking sugar,” the 48-year-old actor said to open, referring, we guess, to the food provided at the event. “F-cking boxed lunched. I’m drunk now, motherf-ckers. Deal with it.” The crowd laughed right along with Cuba because… let's face it… they knew they were at the Footwear News Achievement Awards. “I thought the BET Awards were cheap,” Gooding says below. “In the words of Spike Lee, excuse my language but, they can fu-k you too, Spike.” An insider confirms to The Daily Mail that Gooding went straight for the bar as soon as he got inside the venue, prior to making a “beeline for Rihanna.” Gooding was also telling people that he and his wife are now separated. But here she is at something called the Footwear News Achievement Awards (which sounds even more made-up than my annual fake Tuna Awards), and I have to say, I think she’s finally found an angle that works for her. A Lil Positivity: Urban Chicago Prep School Sends 100 Percent Of Graduates To College

With all the violence going on in Chicago, it’s nice to hear some good news. Urban Prep School Sends All Graduates To College If only more schools could follow in their footsteps. According to The Huffington Post: All 167 graduating seniors of Chicago’s Urban Prep Academies are college-bound for the fourth consecutive year. Students of the two Chicago public charter high schools — located in the city’s Englewood and University Village neighborhoods — gathered Thursday morning to celebrate the achievement of their schools, which some have dubbed “Hogwarts in the Hood” for their impressive, seemingly magical rates of success, CBS Chicago reports. Still, Urban Prep’s founder and CEO Tim King says, “the only magic going on at Urban Prep is the magic that these guys put in with their hard work and dedication.” Mayor Rahm Emanuel was on hand at the Thursday celebration and said the network’s students were setting a fine example others should follow, the Chicago Defender reports. “I want everyone in this city, I want everyone in this country to look up here,” Emanuel said. According to Fox Chicago, 85 percent of the students at Urban Prep’s campuses come from low-income families and many of the students start at least two grade levels behind where they should be.
