True Story: Woman Discovers Rogue IUD In Her Abdomen 11 Years After Suspect Doctor Visit

Source: skynesher / Getty An Ohio woman is making weird news headlines all over the nation after she lived with an IUD in her abdomen for over a decade. Back in 2007, Melinda Nichols decided she was done having babies and had the intrauterine device inserted…but weeks later, it was nowhere to be found. The New York Post reports: “In late 2007, Melinda Nichols of Chillicothe, Ohio, decided she had delivered her last child. She’d already tried the pill and a form of the Depo-Provera shot without success. So, a few weeks after her youngest son’s birth, she opted for the Mirena intrauterine device (IUD), a semi-permanent form of hormonal birth control. Nichols returned to the doctor who performed the insertion for a follow-up just a couple weeks later. She was told a routine X-ray would be taken to make sure her IUD was in the same place her doctor had left it. The X-ray showed no IUD.” According to the report, the doctor told her the IUD “fell out,” at which point she asked “Wouldn’t that be something I would have seen?” The suspect doc “assured her it can happen without notice, and suggested she get another one. Frustrated, she made the final call to have a tubal ligation instead,” NY Post states. Over a decade later, Nichols had another abdominal x-ray done after straining her back at work. “You need to call your OB,” the doctor told her, according to the site, adding “Your IUD is in a weird spot.” “Her X-ray showed that the implant had apparently punctured through the cervix and migrated up the abdominal cavity. Nichols was understandably baffled,” NY Post goes on. Apparently, this may have occurred due to an insertion by an inexperienced practitioner: “Dr. Stephen Chasen, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist at Weill Cornell Medicine & NewYork-Presbyterian, says IUD ‘migration’ happens due to ‘perforation’ of the uterine wall. This may occur during the insertion process thanks to an inexperienced practitioner. Or, the IUD may “erode” through the uterus and end up floating somewhere in the abdomen. This happens to about one out of every 1,000 IUD patients.” Last month, Nichols went in to have the IUD removed via laparoscopy. “Using snaking cameras and robotic arms, surgeons explored her lower organs in search of the rogue implant,” according to the NY Post. I Am Jazz Trailer Reveals Surgical Challenges, Introduces New Boyfriend

In earlier teasers, we knew that Jazz Jennings' gender confirmation surgery had a complication . As this trailer makes clear, viewers will see the drama before, during, and after her surgery. On top of that, we'll see Jazz tackle a difficult interview … and the new man in her life. This new season of I Am Jazz is going to be full of major life milestones. Notably, Jazz undergoes a challenging genital surgery. “I’ve been waiting for this my whole life,” Jazz gushes about her upcoming procedure. “And now it’s time.” While we know that Jazz is doing great after the operation, there were a number of problems for surgeons. “The surgical team haven’t figured out what approach they’re going to take to building my vagina,” Jazz admits in the trailer. Not every transgender person gets bottom surgery — the term for gender confirmation surgery performed upon genitals. It's expensive, there are risks, it can be imperfect, and most importantly, gender and genitals are not synonymous. But it's not a new procedure, and there have been great strides towards protecting the process during recent decades. Still, one of Jazz's surgeons admits that giving Jazz a vagina will be “the most difficult case that I have encountered.” Why? It's complicated. Jazz was lucky enough to have a supportive family as a child, so she was able to go on puberty blockers and then the right hormones. This spared her the indignity of going through the wrong kind of puberty and meant that she was able to grow her own breasts. However, that meant that her genitals never grew, which means that doctors have less tissue with which to work. Resourceful surgeons ultimately decided to use part of the lining of her peritoneum, which is located in her abdominal cavity. This was a source of extra tissue and is also regenerative. But there's more to Jazz's journey this season than her bottom surgery. She turned 18 this past year, and while fans have seen her dip her toes in the dating world before, it looks like things are more serious now. “I feel like I’ve been ready to fall in love for so long,” she tells her brother in one scene. Jazz describes love: “It’s like the ultimate connection.” Yep. She has a specific boy on her life — and his name is Amir. “There’s a boy in the picture now,” Jennings reveals. “Amir just gets me, and I get him.” “Have you kissed him yet?” one of Jazz's friends asks during the trailer. Jazz is almost surprised by the question, and says: “I’ve kissed him a lot.” That is an extremely age-appropriate answer. The new season of I Am Jazz premieres on Tuesday, January 1, at 10pm. Other elements of this season teased by the new trailer include a difficult interview that she gave in 2018. Additionally, she has a spiritual consultation that seems to urge her to put off her surgery by just a short while. Jazz had to wait her entire life, so we'll understand if she didn't heed that advice.

Happy Birthday United States, The Situation and Malia Obama!

The United States of America turns 236 years old today. That’s quite the milestone. But a couple other big names also celebrate birthdays, and each also represents the greatness of the country in which we all reside. First, there’s Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino, a man solely famous for his abdominal muscles, tolerance for alcohol ( rehab stint not withstanding) and unusual vocabulary. He turns 30 today and we’d have to imagine there’s a lot of gym, some tanning and also a bit of laundry in his future. Where else would someone like this become a millionaire? Take that, France! Then there’s Malia Obama, newly 14 and the daughter of the first African-American President in our history. Her father is biracial and was raised in a poor household in Hawaii. Love him or think he’s the second coming of Karl Marx, Barack Obama represents the American dream. So put down that firework, raise your Budweiser and toast the United States, The Situation and Malia today. Here’s to hoping the Mayans were wrong and we’re all around to honor year number 237.
