Who will succeed Pope Benedict XVI as the head of the Roman Catholic Church? No one will know until the white smoke comes out the conclave room chimney. That hasn’t stopped Vatican followers from rampantly speculating, however, and The College of Cardinals has no shortage of factors – and candidates – to consider. Below are some of the key figures of the world’s biggest church whose names have emerged from experts as potential candidates to become the next Pope: The top-secret conclave kicks off today. The Cardinals will undoubtedly consider … Cardinal Angelo Scola, 71: He’s the archbishop of Milan, a good launching pad, and the former Patriarch of Venice, which has produced many a papal candidate. Cardinal Marc Ouellet, 68: A frontrunner, the former archbishop of Quebec, who heads the Congregation of Bishops, also speaks six languages. Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, 69: Born in Argentina to Italian parents, Sandri was No. 2 in the Vatican Secretary of State’s office under Pope John Paul II. Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, 70: The Italian-born president of the Pontifical Council for Culture, Ravasi is seen as both media-savvy and hugely popular. Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, 70: The archbishop of Genoa is well-connected, having served twice as the president of the Italian bishop’s conference. Cardinal Peter Turkson, 64: The first Ghanaian cardinal, he’s president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and the Vatican’s point man on Catholicism in Africa. Cardinal Odilo Scherer, 63: Born in Brazil to parents of German extraction, Scherer’s edge is geography; he hails from a region that is home to half the world’s Catholics. Cardinal Timothy Dolan, 63: The head of the archdiocese of New York is seen as one of the Vatican’s most popular figures – charismatic, camera-ready and conservative. Desiree Hartsock: The Bachelorette!

Desiree Hartsock started out as one of 26 women vying for Sean Lowe on The Bachelor, finishing fourth behind Catherine Giudici, Lindsay Yenter and AshLee Frazier. This summer, she’ll be the one everyone is competing for. Fan favorite Desiree (known affectionately as Des) will be The Bachelorette, as expected! The news was confirmed last night on the After the Final Rose special. “I just can’t even believe I’m here. It’s just such a blessing,” she said. “I could never have imagined signing up for The Bachelor and having this opportunity.” Overwhelmed by the crowd’s standing ovation. Desiree had tears in her eyes. “If you’re crying now, we’re in for a long season together,” Chris Harrison joked. The host then asked her about watching The Bachelor finale . “I’m so happy for them,” she said of Sean and Catherine. “I could only hope to have the love that they’ve found and I am very hopeful in all of this. And I do hope to meet the man of my dreams.” “I do believe [in the show]. I’m ready, I’m open and I’ve seen it happen,” she added. “I did realize that the feelings are real, the emotions that you go through.” “It is a real relationship and I’m going to have many of them! Dog Shoots Owner, Unlikely to Face Criminal Charges

Gregory Dale Lanier – a 35-year old resident of Frostproof, Florida – was hit in the leg by a bullet on Saturday in one of the year’s most unusual shootings. Because the shot was fired by his dog. According to The Highlands Today , Lanier and his canine were driving in a truck when the dog accidentally kicked a .380 pistol that was lying on the ground. It fired once and struck its owner in the lower extremity. Authorities have ruled that the shooting was accidental and the Lanier’s injury was not serious. But while it’s easy to laugh at this incident, it’s far too common of an occurrance for weapons to simply be lying around. Recent case in far more tragic point: Marquiez Deshon Pratt was arrested this week after his four-year old found a gun nearby his napping father and died of a self-inflicted wound. Perez Hilton Adopts Baby: First Photo!

In Perez Hilton news that has nothing to do with the celebrity gossip fiend falsifying a rumor or drawing a penis over the face of an actress… this controversial blogger is a new father! “I am ready to announce that earlier this month I was blessed with the birth of my first child, a beautiful and healthy baby boy – with lots of hair on his tiny head!” Perez just posted on his site. “I am so humbled to welcome this little man into my life. And I am honored and ready for the challenge of guiding him through his.” It’s unknown whether the 34-year-old adopted or went with a surrogate, while Hilton did not reveal the child’s name of birth date. In addition to his website, Perez has grown into an author and television personality. We’ve often taken issue with the way Hilton presents his stories, but leave it to an adorable baby to quash any feud between bloggers. We send this new father nothing but our best wishes.

The Bachelorette Announcement, Premiere Dates Revealed!

Sean Lowe hasn’t handed out his final rose on The Bachelor, but The Bachelorette will be unveiled March 11 … and the season will kick off May 20. The identity of the next lady looking for love with be announced live on The Bachelor: After the Final Rose special, which airs on Monday, March 11. If you’ve read The Bachelor spoilers , then you know how things allegedly end. Either Catherine Giudici or Lindsay Yenter will walk away engaged to Sean. The other will be a clear favorite to be The Bachelorette, along with this winter’s third- and fourth-place finishers, AshLee Frazier and Desiree Hartsock. AshLee may not have helped her cause with her exit this week, while Des generally proved popular with fans. More so than Lindsay? Or Catherine? The couple, whose courtship was chronicled on ABC#39;s hit reality show, have ended their engagement. “It#39;s true,” Flajnik said, although he didn#39;t wish to elaborate on the split. The Bachelorette Promo: I’m Falling in Love … With More Than One Person!

Emily Maynard is falling in love on The Bachelorette . That’s the good news. The bad? It’s with more than one person, as she tells us in the promo for next week! Yes, the show recycles this line every season, but in Emily’s case, it really does appear true. Jef Holm, Sean Lowe and Arie Luyendyk, Jr. have all won her over. Who will she pick? Read The Bachelorette spoilers if you want to know the latest intel there. Regardless, it clearly won’t be an easy call for the 26-year-old: The Bachelorette Episode 809 Promo With overnight dates looming in Curacao, how will the single mom reconcile the fact that all of the above are looking more and more like husband material? “From here on out it’s Emily trying to choose a lifestyle, a father for Ricki and a great man and husband for herself. These guys just get better each week and in my opinion she’s narrowed it down to three phenomenal guys,” says host Chris Harrison. “Emily was a mess. She began to get really emotional, not only that time is running out, but she was freaking out that she’s falling for three guys.” “She was thinking how tough it would be to say goodbye to [Chris Bukowski], but really I think she was thinking afterward how it’s going to be impossible to say goodbye to Sean, Arie or Jef. Courtney Robertson and Ben Flajnik Just Might Work, Bachelor’s Chris Harrison Opines

The Bachelor host Chris Harrison spoke to reporters via conference call today and shared his thoughts on the re-engaged Ben Flajnik and Courtney Robertson. Chris paints a fair portrait of the controversial couple, and sympathizes with Courtney (though he concedes he and his family were Team Lindzi from the start). Will the couple make it? Will we see them on TV again? And what was it like whipping out that ring on the After the Final Rose special? So many questions. Excerpts from his lengthy interview on all of that and more below: On whether he’s rooting for rooting Ben and Courtney : “Of course I’m rooting them on. You know, why wouldn’t you?” “I mean, I know that she wasn’t the most popular choice and that if you put it to America’s vote maybe she wouldn’t have been in it, but I think the important thing and the great thing about the show is that was Ben’s choice.” “Why not respect that? Who am I not to respect that? And so of course I wish them the best and the million dollar question, will they make it? Who knows? Who’s to say which couples make it in life? But I wish them the very best.

Ben Flajnik and Fiancee: Already on the Rocks?

The Bachelor season finale and After the Final Rose special air on Monday. All eyes will be on Ben Flajnik and his fiancee … whomever that may be. If you want to know who we think it is, check out The Bachelor spoilers page we’ve put up and updated throughout the season. But it doesn’t sound good … From the magazine cover above, you’d assume that Ben was not only dumped by either Courtney Robertson or Lindzi Cox already, but he selected the wrong woman on The Bachelor finale, and there’s a nude video scandal lurking. That would be probably one-third true. All of the reputable intel we’ve found thus far suggests that he has NOT broken up with his fiancee – despite his increasingly obvious lack of enthusiasm for the show and allegedly kissing some random girl last week. They’re still together. For now. The After the Final Rose special Monday night should be telling, as it was filmed March 4, and will offer at least some insight on how the couple is doing. It airs immediately after Flajnik doles out his final rose around 9:55 p.m. Who do you think deserves it?
