Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken felt so strongly about the idea of his Newsies readapted Broadway stage show that he decided to compose the show himself. You can’t blame the guy — who doesn’t love the Burbank-y New York of Newsies , the ’92 Disney flop about an old-timey newsboy strike? In footage from the new show, we hear from Menken, the show’s writer Harvey Fierstein, and the actors hawkin’ papes.

Newsies Musical Gets Start Date

Newsies , perhaps the greatest Bad Movie We Love , will hit Broadway as a new musical from Sept. 15-Oct. 16 at Millburn, New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse. Original composer Alan Menken is signed on, and he says the show “latche[s] onto exciting elements of what we had in the movie,” while “minimizing the things that were not so great about the movie.” This is a man who understands lovable badness. Huge Disney Flop to Become a Much-Anticipated Musical

Tony-winner Harvey Fierstein has signed on to write a libretto for a stage version of Newsies , the 1992 Disney bomb about the NYC paperboy strike of 1899. Fierstein will be aided by Academy Award-winning composer Alan Menken. The film has gained a considerable following since its poor box office performance, which once prompted star Christian Bale to note, “Time healed those wounds. But it took a while.” Newsboys are reportedly through with him professionally. [ Playbill ]
