Tyra Banks Says She Was Never Naomi Campbell’s Rival, Blames Tokenism For Brit Beauty’s Mean Girl Mentality

Source: Michael Buckner/Getty Images for NAACP / Getty Tyra Banks Talks Investing, “Next Top Model” And Naomi Campbell Tyra Banks retreads some old territory and new ground in a recent interview that visits both her success as co-creator of “America’s Next Top Model” as well as being tested in her early career by one of her very own inspirations — Naomi Campbell. Watch the interview below. The Naomi part comes in at around the 11 minute mark. “It wasn’t a rivalry,” Banks told the Wall Street Journal. “And I’m very sensitive to that word because a rivalry is with two equals to me, where one was very dominant. She was a supermodel and I was just some new girl that got on a plane from Paris and was studying fashion in magazines at a fashion library.” “I had a very painful early days in Paris. As much as I was booking every single fashion show, people didn’t know I was going home at night crying my eyes out because a woman I was looking up to seemed like she just didn’t want me to be there,” Banks said. “And was doing everything in her power to make me go away.” She continued, “I didn’t understand that as a young girl, like why is she doing this? This is so evil. This is so awful. The adult me understands that she was reacting to an industry that was all about a token. When I came on the scene, ‘Naomi look out, there’s another Black girl that’s going to take your spot.’” Banks and Campbell famously made their peace back in 2005 on Tyra’s talk show. Tyra seems like she let Naomi kinda off the hook for her personal behavior with that token excuse. Would you do the same? Do you think she should be done talking about this issue or is it her story to tell as many times as she wants?

Jael Strauss, America’s Next Top Model Alum, Dead at 34

Jael Strauss, the America’s Next Top Model contestant who revealed just two months ago that she had breast cancer , died Tuesday morning around 11 a.m. She was under hospice care at the time. And she was 34 years old. Insiders close to Strauss tell TMZ that her condition took a turn for the worse on Monday night, following several days during which Strauss was unconscious. Her family has been allowing visitors to see Jael, however, up until the final few hours of her life. It was clear at that point that the Season 8 hopeful did not have much time remaining. Strauss chose to stop chemotherapy around Halloween and went into hospice on Thanksgiving, writing on Facebook: “First night in hospice. So many things I never knew about life. Or death. So many things.” It was only a month or so before this transition that Strauss wrote a lengthy and emotional message to fans about her Stage IV breast cancer. Likely aware at the time that the diagnosis was fatal, she said: “It has aggressively spread throughout my body and is incurable.” “With treatment it may prolong my life longer than the ‘few months’ doctors said I could make it. I don’t want to die.” “I need another one of those miracles that I got back in 2013.” With this statement, Strauss was referring to a past battling the devastating affects of crystal meth addiction. This was something difficult and personal, and which she addressed publicly in an appearance on Dr. Phil in 2012. In August, just two months before the breast cancer diagnosis, Strauss celebrated five years of sobriety. This is what she wrote on Instagram in tribute to herself, her situation and all those who helped her along the way: I know a few things to be true: Miracles are real, Recovery is possible for everyone no matter how far gone you think you are, We are never too broken to be put back together. Service work feels better than the greatest high. Sobriety makes you weirder not normal and I’d be dead if it weren’t for all the love and forgiveness I’ve been showered with by my friends and family. View Slideshow: The Most Shocking Reality Star Deaths: Gone, But Not Forgotten A GoFundMe was opened for Strauss about a month ago that has thus far raised more than $18,000 to fund her treatment. SAid Jael’s family and friends to TMZ in a statement: “The one blessing was that we were able to show her how loved she was before she passed. She brought so much light to people.” As mentioned above, Strauss competed on the eighth season of America’s Next Top Model in 2007 and finished sixth in the competition. May Jael Strauss rest in peace.

Jael Strauss, America’s Next Top Model Alum, Has Stage IV Breast Cancer

I don’t want to die. These are the heartbreaking words penned by Jael Strauss on her Facebook page in a message to fans that relayed the most painful news imaginable: She has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. “I was gonna write some long thing but some of you guys deserve to know,” the 34-year old wrote last week, four days into Breast Cancer Awareness month. She then added very simply: “On October 2nd I was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer. It has aggressively spread throughout my body and is incurable.” Stage IV is the final and most serious stage for cancer. It is not always a death sentence, but as Strauss writes here, there is rarely any treatment options for someone that has contracted such an illness. Strauss later confirmed that the name of her illness was rapidly progressive metastatic inflammatory breast cancer. She went on to explain that undergoing chemotherapy and treatment may help extend her doctors’ original prognosis. “With treatment it may prolong my life longer than the “few months” doctors said I could make it,” she added. “I don’t want to die. I need another one of those miracles that I got back in 2013.” Strauss competed on the eighth season of America’s Next Top Model in 2007, finishing six among all contestants. Just this past August, she celebrated five years of sobriety, writing at the time on Instagram; “Today I have 5 years sober. Good God! “I know a few things to be true: Miracles are real, Recovery is possible for everyone no matter how far gone you think you are, We are never too broken to be put back together.” She talked years ago with Dr. Phil about how an intervention by her loved ones allowed her to overcome her addiction.  (Hence the reference above to the year 2013.) “Service work feels better than the greatest high, Sobriety makes you weirder not normal,” she continued last month. “And I’d be dead if it weren’t for all the love and forgiveness I’ve been showered with by my friends and family. Thank you to anyone that’s ever let me sponsor them.” To help offset some of the medical costs, Strauss’ friends have set up a GoFundMe page on her behalf, confirming that the former model has already started chemotherapy. “What we do know is that Jael is putting all of her energy and drive into fighting this insidious disease and can use as much support and love as possible,” reads the fundraising page, noting that: “Jael is in tremendous pain right now and is unable to work. In a month, she will be let go from her job and lose her health insurance.” It adds: Jael, being the selfless person that she is, has helped countless people throughout her life as an advocate for recovery and social justice. She has offered everything she has to people in need; no matter what their situation, she is always ready to help with an empathetic heart and nonjudgmental spirit. She has created “gofundmes” for literally dozens of her friends, and it is now time for us to pay her back. We have the chance, and honestly the obligation, to step up and return the favor. You can donate to her cause HERE . The campaign has since raised over $7,800 in three days. “Currently fighting stage 4 inflammatory breast cancer,” reads Jael’s Instagram bio. “Plz send miracles.” We are doing just that.

America’s Next Top Model: Canceled by The CW!

And now, for some news that is nothing to smize about: America’s Next Top Model is coming to an end. With only a few of episodes remaining until Tyra Banks crowns the winner of America’s Next Top Model Cycle 22, the iconic model has came out on Wednesday and said she’s prepared to wrap up the long-running reality program. For good. “TYRA MAIL! Thinking #ANTM22 should be our last cycle. I truly believe it’s time. May your pics be forever fierce. Keep on Smizing!” Banks wrote. It’s unclear whether Tyra truly arrived at this decision on her own or whether The CW basically canceled the fashion-based competition. Either way, the series finale will now air on December 4 at 9/8c. According to a CW source, the network is planning a retrospective special for some time in 2016. “America’s Next Top Model was a successful franchise for two networks, first at UPN and then The CW, and it became not just a ratings hit, but a global pop culture phenomenon,” said Mark Pedowitz, President of the CW, in a statement. “I want to thank Tyra and Ken for all their years of success in establishing a show that was not just popular in the U.S., but all across the world.”
