Race Matters: Arizona Lawmaker Doubles Down On Saying Black People Don’t ‘Blend In’ With Society

Source: Robert Alexander / Getty David Stringer Doesn’t See A Problem With His Racist Comments An Arizona state legislator with a long history of anti-immigrant comments is facing calls to resign after he told university students that black people “don’t blend in” to society like European immigrants do. Representative David Stringer, who represents the Yavapai County area, made the comments after a public lecture at Arizona State University on November 19, during which a history professor, Donald Critchlow, discussed the 2018 midterm elections. Mr. Critchlow said that the students recorded a “private conversation” they had with Mr. Stringer after the lecture, which was  sent to local news outlets  last week. In said recordings, Mr. Stringer can be heard saying that he doesn’t think America is a “successful nation.” He follows up by saying that “diversity is relatively new” in our country, and that while European immigrants assimilated to society, “that’s not the case with African-Americans or other racial groups because they don’t melt in.” He continued on to say that this was connected to “white flight” and people moving out of Detroit and Baltimore. Stringer said that immigration was affecting states like Arizona in a “dramatic way.” He claimed that it cost more to educate children who don’t speak English as their first language, which he described as a “burden” on taxpayers. He also said that he wants to slow down immigration because it is happening too fast. The context of the conversation and how it began were not immediately clear from these recordings. Since his comments became public, there has been widespread condemnation of Stringer’s words. The Prescott City Council voted 6 to 1 to pass a resolution asking for Mr. Stringer’s resignation. David Stringer says he doesn’t intend to resign for his comments, though–because to him, it’s all true, he explained to the  Prescott Valley Town Council on Thursday evening. “I believe that everything I‘ve said, if you look at what I actually said, is defensible, that it is truthful, that it is factually accurate, that it can be supported by academic research,” the Republican said. Though calls for his resignation have been made, not a single Republican in the Arizona House has called for Stringer’s resignation.

Random Ridiculousness: The “Vaportini” Vaporizer Is The Newest Way To Get “Drunk” By Inhaling Alcohol

Looks like free base if you ask us… Vaportini Allows You To Get Drunk By Inhaling Alcohol Vapor Via Huffington Post We all know that it’s disingenuous of shady-looking stores to bill vaporizers as tools for dispersing the scents of herbs and spices. Nobody uses them for aromatherapy. They use them for intoxication. What you may not know, however, is that it’s now possible to get inebriated using a vaporizer without breaking the law in 48 of the 50 States. We’re not talking about some new kind of legal pseudo-mary jane here, either. If you have the right kind of vaporizer, you can actually inhale an intoxicant that’s legal for those over 21 in all 50 states: alcohol. The vaporizer in question is called a Vaportini. According to Time Out Chicago, it was invented by a Chicago woman named Julie Palmer back in 2009, but it went on sale on her website for $34.50 each in December. The Vaportini works similarly to a traditional vaporizer, in that it involves gently heating the substance until it releases intoxicating vapors, which are then inhaled through a straw. In the case of the Vaportini, that substance is liquor and the heat source is a candle. Palmer has been serving “drinks” — we aren’t sure what else to call them — in a Vaportini at Red Kiva, the bar she owns in Chicago, since she first invented the device. Chicagoist blogger Anthony Todd got a taste of the vapor back then and noted that he was “frankly amazed at how well the flavors of the liquor carried over” from liquid to vapor. He also said that the inhaled alcohol affected him quickly, but that his drunkenness (is THAT even an applicable word in this case?) subsided quickly. Sorry, but you’re gonna look lame as hell in the club with your friends huddled over that glass d!$k, trying to get “drunk”. Images via Vaportini

Jan Brewer, President Obama Trade Barbs on Tarmac

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer received an earful from President Obama when she met him on an airport tarmac outside Phoenix yesterday – and responded in kind. The Democratic chief executive and Republican governor could be seen engaged in an intense conversation right at the base of Air Force One’s steps. Both could be seen smiling, but speaking forecefully at the same time. At one point, Jan Brewer pointed a finger directly in Barack Obama’s face. Why? Asked later what the conversation was about, Brewer, who recently published Scorpions for Breakfast , said, “He was a little disturbed about my book.” Jan Brewer Points Finger at Obama Something of a memoir of her years growing up, Scorpions defends her signing of Arizona’s controversial law cracking down on undocumented immigrants. Obama, who opposes that law, was objecting to Brewer’s description of a meeting they had at the White House in June 2010. Bad blood has boiled since. Brewer described Obama as lecturing her like “a little kid in a classroom, if you will, and he was this wise professor … I felt minimized to say the least.” The Governor also said that later that year, Obama blew her off when he was in town to deliver the commencement address at Arizona State University. On the tarmac Wednesday, Brewer handed Obama an envelope with a handwritten invitation to meet her for lunch and to join her for a visit to the border. “I said to him, you know, I have always respected the office of the president and that the book is what the book is,” she told reporters Wednesday. She said Obama was upset that she wrote he was not cordial: “I said that I was sorry he felt that way. Anyway, we’re glad he’s here, and we’ll regroup.” The President is visiting the Grand Canyon State to push for initiatives laid out in his State of the Union address , which began his reelection bid in earnest. Levi Johnston to Meet with Bristol Over Planned Move

Bristol Palin isn’t cleared to move to Arizona and attend one of the nation’s hardest partying schools. Not yet, at least. As previously reported, the single mother has purchased a home in the southwest and various signs point to her attending Arizona State . But Alaska law prevents Bristol from relocating with Tripp unless she files a motion or the child’s father grants permission. But Levi Johnston will reportedly make it easy on his former lover, as the Z-lister’s rep tells TMZ : “Levi is not at all upset that Bristol is going to Arizona… After the holidays, Levi and Bristol will get together and discuss plans for Tripp.” Expect the pair to work out details of Levi’s visitation rights during this meeting, with one question being who will pay for Johnston’s visits to Arizona. We’re pretty sure the Palins can afford to buy the guy his own private jet. Overall, the relationship between Levi and Bristol appears to be thawing. Perhaps Sunny Oglesby has been a calming influence on the former.
