Didi Benami Plans Songs About ‘Crazy Experience’ Of ‘American Idol’

Latest ‘Idol’ castoff hopes to mine a ‘really long journal entry’ she wrote for new material. By Jim Cantiello Didi Benami Photo: MTV News Didi Benami’s final week on “American Idol” was a bumpy one, what with her tepidly received “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted,” an awkward interaction with Ryan Seacrest during which the host clutched on to her hand and begged her to open up about her deceased friend to 30 million viewers and, of course, her somewhat-shocking elimination Wednesday night, making her the third female singer in a row forced to take a bow. It was a roller-coaster ride , for sure, but also the perfect fodder for a killer song. “That was a crazy experience to say the least,” Benami recently told MTV News. “I wrote the day I got kicked off, actually. I was sitting up in the holding room and … I had this really weird feeling like I knew I was going to be in the bottom three … and I wrote this really long journal entry. … That day is going to turn into something. There’s a lot there.” Before heading out on the American Idols Live! Tour with the rest of the season-nine top 10 this summer, Benami plans to team up with some of her old L.A. songwriter buddies, Kyler England and the “whimsically fantastic” Jason Reeves (who has co-written with Colbie Caillat and Kara DioGuardi). While “Idol” doesn’t allow original songs to be performed by contestants, fans recently got a taste of Didi’s songwriting chops when an old track, “Sweet Rain,” found its way online. “That was a song that I did awhile ago when I was still trying to figure out where I was going [musically],” Didi sighed, before adding, “I have some really, really great songs that I can’t wait to get out, that are way better than ‘Sweet Rain.’ ” Are you excited to hear Didi’s post-“Idol” music? American Idol Exit Interview: Didi Benami

Didi Benami’s journey came to an end on American Idol this week. The 23-year-old won praise (albeit without a judges’ save) from the show’s panel on Wednesday night and moved many to tears on her road to stardom. While she fell short, Didi Benami has a lot to be proud of, and despite disappointment, she’s not feeling distraught, just looking forward to what’s next. Below are excerpts from an interview she did with USA Today … On the scrutiny she faced : “I was not prepared for that. I was not an avid American Idol watcher, so I didn’t know what to expect. Honestly, I was just being myself, and I did stuff that meant something to me and had a good time.” On making the top 10 : I’m relieved that I get to go on tour. I don’t have to work as a waitress anymore. I get to do what I love. It’s a blessing. It’s a relief to know I’ll be able to make a living doing what I love for the summer, hopefully longer.” On wearing her heart on her sleeve : “[Crying] has definitely been therapeutic for me, and I do it as a release. It’s funny because the camera was always catching me when I’m emotional. And I’m not always that emotional.” On losing her way, or so Kara said : “I don’t feel like I lost my way. I feel like they wanted me to do something specific every week … and I went out on a limb several weeks and did different things. And they weren’t expecting it.” On her moment with Siobhan Magnus after being ousted : “Siobhan is a unique, amazing person. I love her very much. She’s a sweetheart. She ended up being my roommate the first week. I met her the first day of Hollywood Week.” On the judges’ save that wasn’t : “It was tough. The whole crowd was chanting, and that was pretty cool. Ultimately, I kind of felt like I was going home, but I thought it would be cool if they exercised the option to let me stay.” On her competition’s reaction : ” Crystal Bowersox and Siobhan and I are really close. Crystal came down and stayed with me last night. They’re amazing, wonderful people. It’s hard when you meet other artists you really connect with.”

He also got the “Idol” hopefuls to weigh in when he caught up with them at Thursday night’s top 12 party in Hollywood. Didi Benami It took no time for Didi Benami to establish her “American Idol” identity: the resident weepy mess. From her initial audition in Denver to almost every single interview on the “Idol” stage, the sensitive singer/songwriter has shed a tear. Tears of joy, tears of mourning, tears of stress. But Didi saves the real emotion for her passionate performances, connecting to lyrics unlike any other singer this season. Best Performance : Didi helped put money in Kara DioGuardi’s pocket when she covered the judge’s song during Hollywood Week brilliantly. Tuesday night, however, Didi busted out the big guns — Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon” — and the timing couldn’t have been more perfect. In the last chance before top 12, Didi picked the right week to remind viewers what she’s capable of. Perhaps she held back on her guitar-playing skills during the first two semifinal performances on purpose? Weakest Performance : Didi’s Ingrid Michaelson cover was more fragile than a Faberg

Didi Benami: American Idol Hopeful, Heart-Breaker

Darn you, American Idol ! We work so hard to remain numb during the early audition episodes of this show, as Fox aims to tug at heart strings more than impress viewers with actual vocal talent. While the singers and their skills will be on full display next week in Hollywood, these editions of the competition are typically reserved for joke acts (see Platt, Larry) and emotional backstories that leave us rolling our eyes like Katy Perry
