‘The Script is Ruined, So the Movie is Ruined’: Michael Cristofer on The Bonfire of the Vanities at 20

Michael Cristofer is mostly known to recent audiences as the Corn Flakes-eating, conspiracy-plotting Truxton Spangler on the recently cancelled AMC series, Rubicon . What fans of Rubicon may not have realized is that Cristofer is also a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and screenwriter who adapted Tom Wolfe’s bestselling novel The Bonfire of the Vanities for the screen — an adaptation, which, 20 years ago this week, became one of the biggest screen disasters of all time.

12 Films of Christmas: Desk Set

This vintage Hollywood rom-com, listed as a holiday favorite in Have Yourself a Movie Little Christmas , features one of American film’s most legendary couples: When efficiency expert Richard Sumner (Spencer Tracy) starts sniffing around the research department of the Federal Broadcasting Company TV network, the librarians naturally get suspicious. That department’s head, Bunny Watson (Katharine Hepburn), knows that Sumner is the inventor of an “electronic brain” called EMERAC, and she worries that if he installs one of his super-computers, she and research librarians Peg (Joan Blondell), Sylvia (Dina Merrill), and Ruthie (Sue Randall) will all be out of a job.

The 11 Most Anticipated Cultural Events of 2011 — Louis’s Picks

As the year closes and I recover from yet another staggeringly bad movie we love , I’m happy to share my dreams for a brighter tomorrow. 2010 was tolerable, but 2011 is poised to give us a Neve Campbell revival, more Logo Network supremacy, and the Oprahcalypse. I’m game.

Who to Blame? The 5 Biggest Culprits in American Idol’s Worst Season

Even if Crystal Bowersox ranks among American Idol ‘s finest talents (and I believe she does), something’s rotten in the state of Seacrest this year. Last season, Idol rejuvenated itself with a blend of personalities — from subtle craftsman Kris Allen to sparkle sorcerer Adam Lambert. This season’s Idol cast is dogged by a number of distracting elements — and worst, the Idol -consuming populace is confused over the true culprits in this fiasco. Thus, we’re ranking the five biggest contributors to Idol ‘s weakest year. Hopefully number one will start to garner the skewering it deserves. Daggers ready!

Is Kara DioGuardi the Best Judge on American Idol?

American Idol ‘s current season of contestants is spottier than a D.I.Y. dye-job., but the judging panel isn’t exactly a cohesive powerhouse either. Between Randy Jackson, Ellen DeGeneres, and Simon Cowell, critiques have been vague, pandering, and suspiciously biased , respectively. Meanwhile, Kara DioGuardi has improved from her first season, now ably diagnosing issues with song choices and artistic intention. Could the withering backlash against her have had more to do with her sometimes-cloying way of addressing the contestants than with her views themselves? Here are three advantages Kara has over her fellow judges:

What the 9 Remaining Idol Contestants Must Sing to Stay Alive

This week, two contestants meet untimely ends on American Idol . The strangest part of this dual execution? Everyone’s in jeopardy. The long-cemented frontrunners have slowed down significantly, and the waste-of-space also-rans have pledged to up their game. Let’s figure out where each of the nine finalists ought to hitch their Miley Cyrus-autographed wagons, whether to old soul classics or current Kelly Clarkson hits.

American Idol Goes for Brooke

Brooke White is slated to perform (along with guest-mentor Adam Lambert) on Wednesday’s American Idol results show in a duet with Miley Cyrus ex Justin Gaston. The season seven fifth-place finisher is part of the web series If I Can Dream with Gaston and recent Idol castoff Alex Lambert, and she’ll inevitably chirp something along the lines of her gentle “You’re So Vain”/”Let it Be” triumphs. My response? I could skip this second-rate Didi Benami. Sorry, but where’s the urgency? The hurt? The fiiii-yahhhhhh-herrrrrrr ? If you ask me, we need a results-night comeback from a true Idol gem. I’m talking about the best contestant in the show’s history — and resident funny valentine — Melinda Doolittle. [ EW ]

American Idol Exit Interview: Didi Benami

Didi Benami’s journey came to an end on American Idol this week. The 23-year-old won praise (albeit without a judges’ save) from the show’s panel on Wednesday night and moved many to tears on her road to stardom. While she fell short, Didi Benami has a lot to be proud of, and despite disappointment, she’s not feeling distraught, just looking forward to what’s next. Below are excerpts from an interview she did with USA Today … On the scrutiny she faced : “I was not prepared for that. I was not an avid American Idol watcher, so I didn’t know what to expect. Honestly, I was just being myself, and I did stuff that meant something to me and had a good time.” On making the top 10 : I’m relieved that I get to go on tour. I don’t have to work as a waitress anymore. I get to do what I love. It’s a blessing. It’s a relief to know I’ll be able to make a living doing what I love for the summer, hopefully longer.” On wearing her heart on her sleeve : “[Crying] has definitely been therapeutic for me, and I do it as a release. It’s funny because the camera was always catching me when I’m emotional. And I’m not always that emotional.” On losing her way, or so Kara said : “I don’t feel like I lost my way. I feel like they wanted me to do something specific every week … and I went out on a limb several weeks and did different things. And they weren’t expecting it.” On her moment with Siobhan Magnus after being ousted : “Siobhan is a unique, amazing person. I love her very much. She’s a sweetheart. She ended up being my roommate the first week. I met her the first day of Hollywood Week.” On the judges’ save that wasn’t : “It was tough. The whole crowd was chanting, and that was pretty cool. Ultimately, I kind of felt like I was going home, but I thought it would be cool if they exercised the option to let me stay.” On her competition’s reaction : ” Crystal Bowersox and Siobhan and I are really close. Crystal came down and stayed with me last night. They’re amazing, wonderful people. It’s hard when you meet other artists you really connect with.”

American Idol Didi March 31 Diddy Dirty Money, Usher and Ruben Studdard

Diddy’s group, the Diddy Dirty Money entertains the millions of viewers and the crowds at American Idol but the real story is about how the 10 finalists to American Idol are now reduced to 9. They sang the song “Helo Good Morning.” Diddy, Diddy Dirty Money, Usher and Ruben Studdard performed at the Top 10 final for American Idol season 9. Didi Benami, who sang What Becomes of the Broken Hearted went home with a broken heart. She was always the weaker member of the crew and many expected her to go home. Though she did have a strong following of loyalists, it was her time. Simon Cowell gave Didi Benami the news. It’s quite a coincidence that the day Diddy and his new group the Diddy Dirty Money comes onto the American Idol stage, that it would also be Didi that would go home. Maybe Didi can join Diddy’s group and they can call it the Diddy Didi Dirty Money or Didi Diddy Dirty Money. I apologize for that lame joke and will keep my day job.
