Lee Dewyze Gets Back In The ‘American Idol’ Race With ‘That’s Life’

‘If this was the last night of performances, you would have won this whole thing,’ Ellen says on Sinatra Night. By Larry Carroll Lee Dewyze on “American Idol” Tuesday Photo: Fox When Frank Sinatra sang “That’s Life,” the song became a masterpiece, a devil-may-care case study in the art of cool, careless crooning about enduring the bad days. On Tuesday night (May 4), Lee Dewyze made the song his own, simultaneously conquering his own demons and the specter of the Chairman of the Board. The spiky-haired “American Idol” dark horse took on a signature tune from Ol’ Blue Eyes for the show, with necktie appropriately undone. Accompanied on a Hammond organ by mentor Harry Connick Jr., Dewyze straddled the top of the instrument as if paying tribute to the bar-embracing persona of Sinatra, backed by a bluesy band. Although feisty Frank likely wouldn’t have endorsed Dewyze’s untucked shirt, he could surely appreciate the way the 26-year-old Illinois singer poured himself into lines like “Each time I find myself flat on my face/ I pick myself up and get back in the race.” With the performance, Dewyze undoubtedly put himself back into the heat of the “Idol” race. “If this was the last night of performances,” judge Ellen Degeneres beamed with approval, “you would have won this whole thing.” “You gave it a 110 percent,” Simon Cowell agreed. “It was the best performance of the night.” “Another great arrangement by a Louisiana boy,” Randy Jackson said of Connick’s efforts. “You stayed your rocker self. I loved it.” “You can win this thing,” Kara DioGuardi said, before urging Dewyze to go home and write down “I can win this thing” 100 times. Originally composed by Dean Kay and Kelly Gordon for Sinatra’s album of the same name, “That’s Life” was a huge hit when it debuted in 1966. In the years since, the song has been covered by everyone from Bono to Aretha Franklin to David Lee Roth, and now, perhaps the next American Idol. What did you think of Lee’s performance? Betty White ‘Thrilled’ To Appear With Jay-Z On ‘Saturday Night Live’

‘He’s the hottest thing since sliced bread,’ White says of Hov, who joins her on show May 8. By Jocelyn Vena Betty White Photo: Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic In one of the more inspired casting combinations in “Saturday Night Live” history, when Betty White hosts “SNL” for the Mother’s Day special on May 8, she’ll be paired with musical guest Jay-Z . And, it seems that if the situation arises, she’d love to play Bonnie to his Clyde at some point during the show. “I’m thrilled to meet him. I’m thrilled to hear he’s going to be on the show because he’s the hottest thing since sliced bread, but I certainly enjoy him. I hope well get along well,” White told reporters Wednesday about her stint on the show next week. “Yes, [I have listened to his music] … I have no idea [if we’ll work together]! But I’m game to try anything. This is an adventure!” White insisted that she didn’t yet know what the show will entail. And, despite the show biz mantra about never working with kids or animals, animal-lover White would love the chance to do just that. “I have no idea what I’m going to be doing. I haven’t talked to anybody. I hope I’ll be with some kind of animals,” she said. “They’re the other half of my life. They always get my calm and tone me down.” The episode with have many past female cast members coming back to make an appearance, and it leaves the fate of the male cast members up in the air. But, White is certain she’ll find someone to flirt with on set. “I hope not! But if there isn’t any, I’ll hit on every member of the crew!” she joked. “I’ve always had a bawdy sense of humor.” What could Jay-Z and Betty White do together on “SNL” (besides the “Single Ladies” dance)? Tell us in the comments!

Siobhan Magnus’ Elimination Surprises ‘American Idol’ Experts

‘I can only surmise that she was just too damn weird for ‘American Idol,’ ‘ MJ Santilli says. By Gil Kaufman Siobhan Magnus performs on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: FOX On Wednesday, MTV’s “American Idol” experts confidently predicted that big Michael Lynche would be facing elimination for a second time this season after a so-so outing on Shania Twain night. But a few hours later, Mike was saved (again) from the bottom and it was caterwauling, glassblowing apprentice Siobhan Magnus who was ousted , leaving this much-heralded “girls” season on “Idol” down to one female front-runner, Crystal Bowersox. “Siobhan’s elimination was a pretty big shocker,” MTV News’ “Idol in 60 Seconds” major domo Jim Cantiello said. “In the ‘Idol’ pundit world, all bets were on Michael Lynche to go home.” Among the factor’s Jim cited as contributing to the surprise: Magnus got the final “pimp spot” on Tuesday’s show, which helped her join an elite group of pimp spot bootees that includes Lilly Scott, Melinda Doolittle, Anoop Desai and, if you include the finales, David Archuleta and Clay Aiken. Also, for the first time in weeks, she received good notes from the judges’ panel for her energetic cover of “Any Man of Mine.” Well, except for Simon Cowell describing her screaming as the sound of a woman giving birth. “Perhaps viewers assumed Siobhan was safe, or they resisted the over-praise from the judges,” Cantiello speculated. “[But] Siobhan’s journey has been frustrating. The cool, quirky Cape Cod crooner who began this season rocking out to songs by the Animals morphed into a cabaret performer with a penchant for generic ballads and singing through her nose. While ‘Any Man of Mine’ wasn’t a particularly great performance, it signaled a step back in the right direction.” Cantiello now fears that excitement factor may have passed for the season. “I simply do not care what Casey James or Lee Dewyze or Aaron Kelly or even MamaSox will sing,” he lamented. “What you see is what you get. No alarms and no surprises.” MJ Santilli of MJsBigBlog.com predicted a while ago that Magnus might be booted early because of her erratic singing, often defensive post-performance ramblings and amorphous artistic identity. But MJ, too, was unprepared for the elimination this week. “Even though she was one of the weakest performers on Tuesday, there were contestants who were either weaker performers and/or less compelling personalities,” she said. “Aaron Kelly has been mediocre during his entire run on ‘Idol.’ He’s got a decent voice, but his song choices and performing skills have been awful. … But his mommy-centric version of ‘It’s in the Way You Love Me’ had moms and grannies lunging for their phones, I suspect.” Santilli also said Lynche’s performance was just OK, and neither singer leaves you wondering what they’ll be up to next. “Siobhan had a better spot in the lineup than either Mike or Aaron, and the judges liked her too,” she said. “Yet, the viewing audience rejected her, and I can only surmise that she was just too damn weird for ‘American Idol,’ ultimately.”

Eminem Is ‘Hands-On’ During Recovery Sessions, Just Blaze Says

First single, ‘Not Afraid,’ premieres Thursday morning on Em’s Shade 45 satellite-radio station. By Jayson Rodriguez Enimem Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage Eminem is set to begin his Recovery on Thursday when he premieres “Not Afraid,” the first single from his follow-up to last year’s comeback project Relapse. Recovery is set for a June 22 release , the rapper recently announced via Twitter. The album is Eminem’s first substantial body of work with producers other than Dr. Dre, including Jim Jonsin, Drake collaborator Boi-1da and Just Blaze. Just Blaze spoke to Vibe about the project, which he’s still working on, and praised Em’s contribution to each song. “I have a few more songs that I have to finish mixing,” the producer said. “It’s a great experience working with him; he’s such a hands-on artist. … Most artists come in and rap, and the rest is up to you. It’s good to collaborate with someone on the other end of the spectrum.” Just Blaze has been coy about the work he’s down with the Detroit lyricist, but late last year, he admitted that the album, originally slated to be called Relapse 2, was more emotionally driven. Relapse, Eminem’s first release in years, was shaped more by the rapper’s shock rap and fighting his writer’s block brought on by depression and drug dependency. The rapper’s manager, Paul Rosenberg, spoke to Billboard on Wednesday (April 28) and said “Not Afraid” would be uplifting and not a takedown single like Eminem’s past lead efforts. “Not Afraid” is set to debut Thursday morning on Eminem’s Shade 45 satellite-radio station. ‘American Idol’ Experts Predict The End (Again) For Michael Lynche

Casey James and Aaron Kelly will likely join him in the bottom three. By Gil Kaufman Michael Lynche Photo: FOX He might have gotten the judges’ save a few weeks ago, but time appears to have run out for brawny personal trainer Michael Lynche — at least according to MTV’s “American Idol” experts. “I think it’s finally Big Mike Lynche’s time to go,” said MJ Santilli, webmaster of the “Idol” fan site MJsBigBlog.com . “He sang a very competent version of [Shania Twain’s] ‘It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing,’ but unfortunately, Aaron Kelly and Casey James, two other contestants on the cusp, stepped it up this week.” Lynche got mostly positive notes from the judges — except Simon Cowell, who cryptically called the performance “wet” and “girly” — and he brought mentor Twain to tears, but even his Luther Vandross-like take on the songs might not have been enough to push him past other audience favorites. “Aaron had all the grandmas and mommies heading for the tissues first and then their phones to vote after he transformed Twain’s romantic ballad, ‘It’s in the Way You Love Me,’ into an ode to his adoptive mother,” Santilli said. “And Casey James went back to the thing that works for him — wrapping his country growl around a tender ballad.” Santilli thinks Kelly and James will join Lynche in the bottom three, but it will be Big Mike who gets sent home. MTV News’ “Idol” obsessive, Jim Cantiello, had to agree. “All the good will from the judges’ save has dissipated, and we’re left with a performance that viewers may feel like they’ve seen before,” he said. “There was a lot of hoopla from most of the judges about how well Michael connected to the song, but by the end of the episode, Casey and even Aaron managed to perform their songs in a more believable way.” Yes, Twain was driven to tears by Lynche, but Cantiello isn’t sure voters were moved in the same way. “Remember: The guy first went home after a similarly praised and similarly theatrical ‘Eleanor Rigby,’ ” he recalled.
