Jim Jonsin Keeps Busy With ‘American Idol,’ Wiz Khalifa, Eminem

Producer tells Mixtape Daily he’s working with Shady Records’ Yelawolf. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Kara Warner Jim Jonsin Photo: MTV News Mixtape Daily: Jim Jonsin Jim Jonsin says he’s in bed by midnight, but considering his schedule, we have a tough time believing him. One of the Grammy-winning producer and music executive’s latest gigs is mentoring contestants on the current, 10th season of “American Idol.” The Brooklyn native’s job duties include cutting full cover songs within a week’s time that are then sold on iTunes . “I’m into artist development, so I like taking an artist brand new and working with them and teaching them new things and watching them grow,” Jonsin told Mixtape Daily . “They’re having to grow at lightning speed. With the music producers injected into this now, now they’re really at hard knocks, right? Not only do you have to build this performance, but now you have to record a song. And record an amazing song that’s gotta go on iTunes for sale and it reflects you and you being an artist.” Looking at his production discography, it’s clear Jonsin’s career is nothing short of amazing itself. The former engineer for Slip-N-Slide Records has gone on to produce tracks for artists including T.I., Kelly Rowland, Usher and Lil Wayne, winning a Grammy for 2008’s “Lollipop.” Some new jacks have benefited from Jonsin’s studio touch too. Wiz Khalifa’s “On My Level” from his just-released debut, Rolling Papers , is a Jonsin creation. “He’s got that Snoop Dogg vibe with his own twist, Jay-Z kinda,” Jonsin said. “Working with Wiz, it was good. He’s kind of a traditional hip-hop artist, which I love most, mixed with this edgy skater-punk spirit. He definitely blends with my character: I like that.” Jonsin also speaks highly of B.o.B. The ATL rapper/singer/songwriter’s B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray was released on Jonsin’s Rebel Rock label in conjunction with Atlantic Records and Grand Hustle Records. B.o.B and Jonsin have started working on the gold-selling album’s follow-up. “His last album kind of reflects who he is, but he’s growing into something new,” Jonsin said. “I’m waiting for what he brings us back when we go back in the studio — he’s got some ideas — to kind of see the direction he’s going in. We’re letting him lead that. He’s really talented. The guy produces, writes, he does a lot of his own stuff. I think his album will reflect that. I think this album will have a lot of his own work on it. We’re waiting on him to give us the direction. “I think there’ll be less features on this album, more him singing and rapping. Definitely less features: He wants to showcase himself more, put out more of his own ideas.” Another artist Jonsin is working with — Roc Nation’s J. Cole — surely has plenty of ideas, even if he has yet to release an album. “He’s that traditional hip-hop. I’m trying to give it a little Jim Jonsin, a little crossover, a little rock,” Jonsin said. “Some of the stuff we did was more traditional hip-hop with just a little edge to it, some rock in it. So I think we’re going to stick to that and see what happens.” Jonsin’s schedule is also booked with working with 50 Cent for the first time and with Eminem on his latest Shady Records signee’s forthcoming album. “That’s going to be fun,” Jonsin said. “We’re working for Yelawolf’s project. It’s all about Yela. We’re going to actually produce together. I get to work with Eminem producing records.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . ‘Your Highness’ Director Reveals Some ‘Nasty’ Deleted Scenes

‘Justin Theroux’s character, Leezar, lays an egg and a little dragon fetus comes out of it,’ David Gordon Green says of one sequence. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Ryan J. Downey David Gordon Green and Danny McBride on the set of “Your Highness” Photo: Frank Connor Given the unpredictable and improvisational nature of filming comedies — particularly those that involve jokesters Danny McBride, James Franco and director David Gordon Green (“Pineapple Express,” “Eastbound and Down”), it seems fair to assume that a fair amount of material filmed for “Your Highness” was left on the cutting-room floor. When MTV News caught up with the director recently, we asked him what omitted scenes might appear as part of the special features section on DVD/Blu-Ray. “There’s a lot of deleted scenes; all of them because we knew the movie needed to adhere to certain rules,” Gordon Green explained. “There was a really funny sequence that’s a musical sequence in the middle of the movie, of James on the quest, singing a song to Bella Donna who is Zooey Deschanel, up in the tower,” he explained. “[She] is singing back to her love to come and rescue her, and it’s really funny but it was one of the things when we test-screened the movie, we identified that as a point that broke the rules of the movie and it almost seemed like a ‘Saturday Night Live’ sketch,” he continued. “It was really, really funny on its own, but within the rules of the movie, it all of the sudden feels false. So there are things like that that I definitely want to put on the DVD because they’re really enjoyable and I’m really proud of the work that we did to make it happen,” he said, adding that a few things felt a little too over-the-top, even for them. “We had another scene where Justin Theroux’s character, Leezar , lays an egg and a little dragon fetus comes out of it,” he recalled. “Literally, a massive nasty explosion of green goo comes out of his butt, followed by a disgusting egg and a little half-formed fetus, so things like that just felt [like] it was a little excessive in going for something that was heightened and gimmicky,” he said. “[But] that stuff is really fun to watch.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Your Highness.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . You Know You’ve Become A Real New Yorker When…

For those of us not raised in New York City, moving to the concrete jungle is an exciting, but huge adjustment. Everything in NYC is louder, bigger and bolder than anywhere else in the country . When you come from a smaller town, the diversity of activities, people, food and opportunities can be invigorating, but intimidating. In the words of Jay-Z and Alicia Keys, “these streets can make you feel brand new.” However, living in New York City does not necessarily make you a New Yorker. A real New Yorker, has mastered living with the fast pace of the city, has learned the lingo, and adjusted to the unpredictable nature of everyday life in the city that never sleeps. Here are eight tell-tale signs that you’ve gone from a bright-eyed NYC newbie to a seasoned New York City diva. ( Continued at MadameNoire.com )

www.youtube.com From the Reel Junkie channel on NO GOOD TV comes a special presentation on the new film “REPRISE.” The freewheeling passion of youth and the unpredictable perils of fate are both the subject and the breathtaking form of Joachim Triers lean and kinetic journey through friendship, love, madness and creativity: REPRISE. Trier viscerally captures the way life takes off at rocket-speed in the beginning of adulthood and the what-ifs and why-nots that both drive and haunt us as the unbridled hopes of youth come to a screeching halt. The fast-moving story kicks off just as Phillip (ANDERS DANIELSON LIE) and Erik (ESPEN KLOUMAN-HOINER) stand at the mailbox, two cocky, grinning rebels full of 20 year-old verve and dreams, their whole lives hanging in the balance at this singular moment. Each is about to ship off his first novel to publishers, each is hoping to become a wildly influential cult author, each has visions of a new life of non-stop intensity, brilliance, romance and nightclubbing. Fast-forward six months. These reveries have crashed, hard, into reality. Phillip, whose novel garnered instant acclaim and turned him into a mini-celebrity, has had a terrifying breakdown and is just about to be released from a psychiatric hospital. Erik, who never sold his novel, is still pecking away, determined to follow in the footsteps of his undying hero, a reclusive but idolized writing genius, no matter what it takes. REPRISE explores not just what happens to Phillip …

Chinese Missile Could Shift Pacific Power Balance

Naval power has been a prerequisite for national dominance during the last 500 years, and Chinese planners are astute historians. It is time Americans face up to the probability that China will challenge our way of life through aggressive military action within the next 10 years. What would the consequences of Chinese-American military conflict include? 1) Severe food and resource shortages for the majority of people in both countries. 2) Heavy casualties on the battlefield and high seas. 3) Unpredictable refugee migrations which would disrupt the lives of nations allied with either country. 4) Long-term environmental damage. 5) The end of international Internet communications as a result of both countries destroying satellites, and, as a result, a return to pre-1990 conditions in terms of communications. 6) Human misery on a scale not seen since the Second World War. What can we do to prevent such conflict from taking place? Since American public opinion is devalued in China (as a result of heavy Chinese government censorship and organized propaganda), Americans with ties to Chinese citizens must reach out more to strengthen the ties of common interest and friendship. Americans must press their military leaders to become more innovative and adaptable in facing new forms of threats from China and other nations. This must include reassessment of the top-heavy and bloated American military-industrial complex which does not currently provide us with a reliable defense system. We must also become more self-sufficient in producing our own food, clothing, and shelter, so that if the nation's infrastructure is destroyed, we can survive to fight on. War is an obscenity, and planning for war is a sickening and disheartening task; however, those who refuse to face real threats end up imprisoned, enslaved, or dead. added by: Progresshiv

Siobhan Magnus’ Elimination Surprises ‘American Idol’ Experts

‘I can only surmise that she was just too damn weird for ‘American Idol,’ ‘ MJ Santilli says. By Gil Kaufman Siobhan Magnus performs on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: FOX On Wednesday, MTV’s “American Idol” experts confidently predicted that big Michael Lynche would be facing elimination for a second time this season after a so-so outing on Shania Twain night. But a few hours later, Mike was saved (again) from the bottom and it was caterwauling, glassblowing apprentice Siobhan Magnus who was ousted , leaving this much-heralded “girls” season on “Idol” down to one female front-runner, Crystal Bowersox. “Siobhan’s elimination was a pretty big shocker,” MTV News’ “Idol in 60 Seconds” major domo Jim Cantiello said. “In the ‘Idol’ pundit world, all bets were on Michael Lynche to go home.” Among the factor’s Jim cited as contributing to the surprise: Magnus got the final “pimp spot” on Tuesday’s show, which helped her join an elite group of pimp spot bootees that includes Lilly Scott, Melinda Doolittle, Anoop Desai and, if you include the finales, David Archuleta and Clay Aiken. Also, for the first time in weeks, she received good notes from the judges’ panel for her energetic cover of “Any Man of Mine.” Well, except for Simon Cowell describing her screaming as the sound of a woman giving birth. “Perhaps viewers assumed Siobhan was safe, or they resisted the over-praise from the judges,” Cantiello speculated. “[But] Siobhan’s journey has been frustrating. The cool, quirky Cape Cod crooner who began this season rocking out to songs by the Animals morphed into a cabaret performer with a penchant for generic ballads and singing through her nose. While ‘Any Man of Mine’ wasn’t a particularly great performance, it signaled a step back in the right direction.” Cantiello now fears that excitement factor may have passed for the season. “I simply do not care what Casey James or Lee Dewyze or Aaron Kelly or even MamaSox will sing,” he lamented. “What you see is what you get. No alarms and no surprises.” MJ Santilli of MJsBigBlog.com predicted a while ago that Magnus might be booted early because of her erratic singing, often defensive post-performance ramblings and amorphous artistic identity. But MJ, too, was unprepared for the elimination this week. “Even though she was one of the weakest performers on Tuesday, there were contestants who were either weaker performers and/or less compelling personalities,” she said. “Aaron Kelly has been mediocre during his entire run on ‘Idol.’ He’s got a decent voice, but his song choices and performing skills have been awful. … But his mommy-centric version of ‘It’s in the Way You Love Me’ had moms and grannies lunging for their phones, I suspect.” Santilli also said Lynche’s performance was just OK, and neither singer leaves you wondering what they’ll be up to next. “Siobhan had a better spot in the lineup than either Mike or Aaron, and the judges liked her too,” she said. “Yet, the viewing audience rejected her, and I can only surmise that she was just too damn weird for ‘American Idol,’ ultimately.”
