The ‘American Idol’ Top 24, Twitterized

We break down the season 10 hopefuls, in 140 characters or less. By James Montgomery Contestants perform on “American Idol” on Wednesday Photo: FOX On Thursday night, “American Idol” revealed the remainder of the season 10 Top 24, a collection of singer/songwriters, balladeers, scatters, divas, perky teens and belters that will compete to become the heir to Lee DeWyze’s throne (perhaps he’s not the best example, but let’s move on). Unlike previous seasons, this year’s crop of contenders is long on talent, short on sob stories — Chris Medina’s exit made sure of that. And while it’s probably too early to say this, we could be looking at the most- gifted field of singers in “Idol” history (or at least since the epochal third season). So it would probably benefit you to get to know the field before the cruel cut-downs begin. And since we know you’re busy, we’ve decided to condense each contestant into a quick, 140-character bio, each ready to be cut-and-pasted into your very own Twitter feed. For your perusing pleasure, here’s our take on the “American Idol” top 24 — Twitterized. Because how else can you tell your Brett Loewensterns from your Clint Jun Gamboas? American Idol Finale: Whatever, Let’s Choose the Real Idol

Well, Lee DeWyze won American Idol ‘s ninth season. There he is crying for us all, and it’s not enough. I’m doing my modified Nancy Kerrigan-in-intense-pain impersonation, personally. “De Whyyyyyyyyyy ze! De Whhhhhhyyyy ze!” I caw. Ugh. That conclusion was a billy club to the knee. You could say the show’s ninth season was its worst yet ( I know I did. ), but a Crystal Bowersox win would’ve rectified some of the angst. Instead, Idol served a lukewarm DeWyze victory at the end of what was an otherwise tremendous finale, and now the whole 120 minutes reeks of an abandoned paint store. I said it. Fear not: There’s plenty of good for all of us to discuss from last night’s celebration — namely a ranking of the evening’s top 10 performances. By the time we’re done, we’ll make our decision about Idol ‘s real winner. Haterade on tap!

Christina Aguilera Tears Up ‘You Lost Me’ On ‘American Idol’ Finale

Aguilera will perform at 2010 MTV Movie Awards on June 6. By James Montgomery Christina Aguilera performs on “American Idol” on Wednesday Photo: Fox Christina Aguilera may have taken a few years off to raise her son , but the singer proved she’s back in a big way on the “American Idol” finale Wednesday night (May 26). The singer — who will perform at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards on June 6 — tore into a stirring, soulful version of “You Lost Me,” a track from her forthcoming Bionic LP , that proved, if there were any doubt, that she’s got one of the best voices in the business. Aguilera took the stage after this season’s female contestants — Lacey Brown, Didi Benami, Katie Stevens, Siobhan Magnus and Crystal Bowersox — performed a medley of her hits “Beautiful” and “Fighter,” emerging from below the stage to help put the finishing flourishes on the latter, then, as the stage went dark, stepping out into a spotlight for her solo. Accompanied by somber strings and a piano, hair pulled back in her Bionic curls, and wearing a demure black ensemble, Aguilera started softly, singing about smoking guns, lost magic and the tragedy of a dying relationship, then picked up steam from there as the music swirled beneath her. The middle section of the song was smoky and solemn, Aguilera stretching the notes, then, eyes closed and right arm outstretched, sang for the rafters. Her voice got bigger and bigger as the song entered the home stretch, but she never let things get out of control, and brought the tune home with a simple, breath-y “You lost me.” And as the “Idol” audience gave her a much-deserved standing ovation, it became clear that Aguilera still has got the goods to go up against anyone. ‘American Idol’ Experts Predict End For Casey James — Again

DioGuardi fave’s ‘Mrs. Robinson’ failed to impress, while Big Mike’s ‘Free Willy’ song couldn’t be rescued. By Gil Kaufman Casey James Photo: FOX It’s do-or-die time on “American Idol,” and as the judges reminded the final four on Tuesday night, it’s time to prove that you want to win — not just show or place. That said, Lee Dewyze and Crystal Bowersox brought their “A”-games on a night devoted to Songs of the Cinema, including a simmering, knockout duet on the “Once” ballad “Falling Slowly.” Meanwhile, Casey James and Michael Lynche struggled to impress the judges — and our “Idol” experts. “Is this the third week in a row I’ve picked Casey to go ?” wondered MTV News’ Jim Cantiello. “It might be. But this week he was upstaged by Michael ‘A Year Ago I Promised Myself I’d Make It Into the Top 3′ Lynche, who was his only real competition.” Remarking that the Bowersox/Dewyze finale is all but assured, Cantiello said he was into James’ ukulele-strumming take on Simon & Garfunkel’s “Mrs. Robinson” from “The Graduate,” but he wasn’t sure it had as strong an impact as big Mike’s choir-backed take on Michael Jackson’s “Will You Be There” from the boy-and-his-whale tale “Free Willy.” “Not to mention that the audience right in front of him in the mosh pit couldn’t have looked less interested,” he said of James’ underwhelming effect. “There aren’t enough cougars on the planet to keep Casey alive.” MJ Santilli, founder of “Idol” fansite mjsbigblog.com is sure that Lynche and James will make up the bottom two on Wednesday night, if for no other reason than Dewyze and Bowersox just have too much momentum at this point. But who will go home? Even though she thought James performed well, Santilli sensed that the judges were doing their best to undermine his performance by reprising the Kara DioGuardi cougar-bait shtick. “Casey kind of asked for it, choosing to sing ‘Mrs. Robinson,’ a song about a young man seducing an older woman,” she said. “But, he still deserved to have his song critiqued properly.” Santilli said Lynche’s performance was a “snooze-fest,” and since the judges didn’t have much to say for it either, fans might forget to vote for the burly personal trainer. “It’s hard to pick, but I think I’m going with Casey,” she said finally. “He wasn’t in the bottom last week, but that may relax the ‘panic’ voters. Plus, Casey is likely splitting votes with Lee and Crystal. So, Casey? Have a nice trip back to Texas.” What do you think of our experts’ picks? Do you agree? Let us know by leaving a comment below. When American Idol Meets The Twilight Saga…

We were shocked to see Siobhan Magnus go home last night . But that actually wasn’t the strangest development on the American Idol results show. During their weekly Ford commercial, the remaining six finalists made like Robert Pattinson, Kellan Lutz and company, baring fangs and pretending to be vampires… while Michael Lynche fought them off with a garlic pizza. It was a strange sight all around, though Casey James and Crystal Bowersox actually pull off the look well, don’t they? Watch the commercial below now, before Fox yanks it off YouTube: Twilight Meets American Idol What do you think of the commercial? Very cool, or very WTF?!?

Siobhan Magnus’ Elimination Surprises ‘American Idol’ Experts

‘I can only surmise that she was just too damn weird for ‘American Idol,’ ‘ MJ Santilli says. By Gil Kaufman Siobhan Magnus performs on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: FOX On Wednesday, MTV’s “American Idol” experts confidently predicted that big Michael Lynche would be facing elimination for a second time this season after a so-so outing on Shania Twain night. But a few hours later, Mike was saved (again) from the bottom and it was caterwauling, glassblowing apprentice Siobhan Magnus who was ousted , leaving this much-heralded “girls” season on “Idol” down to one female front-runner, Crystal Bowersox. “Siobhan’s elimination was a pretty big shocker,” MTV News’ “Idol in 60 Seconds” major domo Jim Cantiello said. “In the ‘Idol’ pundit world, all bets were on Michael Lynche to go home.” Among the factor’s Jim cited as contributing to the surprise: Magnus got the final “pimp spot” on Tuesday’s show, which helped her join an elite group of pimp spot bootees that includes Lilly Scott, Melinda Doolittle, Anoop Desai and, if you include the finales, David Archuleta and Clay Aiken. Also, for the first time in weeks, she received good notes from the judges’ panel for her energetic cover of “Any Man of Mine.” Well, except for Simon Cowell describing her screaming as the sound of a woman giving birth. “Perhaps viewers assumed Siobhan was safe, or they resisted the over-praise from the judges,” Cantiello speculated. “[But] Siobhan’s journey has been frustrating. The cool, quirky Cape Cod crooner who began this season rocking out to songs by the Animals morphed into a cabaret performer with a penchant for generic ballads and singing through her nose. While ‘Any Man of Mine’ wasn’t a particularly great performance, it signaled a step back in the right direction.” Cantiello now fears that excitement factor may have passed for the season. “I simply do not care what Casey James or Lee Dewyze or Aaron Kelly or even MamaSox will sing,” he lamented. “What you see is what you get. No alarms and no surprises.” MJ Santilli of MJsBigBlog.com predicted a while ago that Magnus might be booted early because of her erratic singing, often defensive post-performance ramblings and amorphous artistic identity. But MJ, too, was unprepared for the elimination this week. “Even though she was one of the weakest performers on Tuesday, there were contestants who were either weaker performers and/or less compelling personalities,” she said. “Aaron Kelly has been mediocre during his entire run on ‘Idol.’ He’s got a decent voice, but his song choices and performing skills have been awful. … But his mommy-centric version of ‘It’s in the Way You Love Me’ had moms and grannies lunging for their phones, I suspect.” Santilli also said Lynche’s performance was just OK, and neither singer leaves you wondering what they’ll be up to next. “Siobhan had a better spot in the lineup than either Mike or Aaron, and the judges liked her too,” she said. “Yet, the viewing audience rejected her, and I can only surmise that she was just too damn weird for ‘American Idol,’ ultimately.”

Drake’s ‘Find Your Love’ Premieres Online

Kanye West-produced second single from Thank Me Later features Drake in full crooner mode. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: Skip Bolen/ WireImage Drake’s long-awaited collaboration with Kanye West finally hit the Internet early Thursday morning (April 29). The pulsating “Find Your Love” was released on the Toronto MC’s Web site (though it has since been taken down due to bandwidth issues). The track was produced by West and features Drake in full crooner mode as he sings about saving his relationship. “I’m more than just an option,” he sings over sparse drums and piano licks. “Refuse to be forgotten/ I took a chance with my heart/ And I feel it taking over / I better find your loving/ I better find your heart.” “Find Your Love” is Drake’s second official single from his debut album Thank Me Later, due June 15. Lead selection “Over” came out in March ; “Shut It Down,” featuring The-Dream , leaked soon after; and he’s been performing another song, “Fireworks,” on his Away From Home Tour. The rapper was in Jamaica recently to film the video for “Find Your Love.” The track is Drake’s third collaboration with West , who direct the “Best I Ever Had” video and joined Drake, Lil Wayne and Eminem on “Forever.” Last year Drake told MTV News that the 808s & Heartbreak superstar was “the most influential person on his sound.” “Before I ever got the chance to meet him, Kanye West shaped a lot of what I do, as far as music goes,” Drake said. “We always, always, always took the time to listen to Kanye’s music and appreciate it beyond. We searched the samples and find out where his inspiration came from, because he has one of the best ears in music, period. He knows how to recognize great music that’s not his. He knows how to utilize great sounds and great music. So before I met him, I had the utmost respect for Kanye West. I’d even go as far as to say he’s the most influential person, as far as a musician, that I’d ever had in my life.” What do you think of Drake’s new song? Let us know in the comments! ‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds: Shania Twain Gives The Boys A Boost

Siobhan Magnus and Crystal Bowersox struggle on country week. By Jim Cantiello The “American Idol” top 6 with Shania Twain Photo: FOX This week, the top six had to sing Shania Twain songs, but the contestants were completely upstaged by Shania herself, who displayed a perfect blend of characteristics from all the “Idol” judges. She had Simon’s sharp insight, Paula’s sweetness, Kara’s songwriting chops and Randy’s passion for peculiar cardigans. Plus, it was so nice of Shania to bring along the woman who takes care of her horses. (Seriously, who was that expressive lady sitting next to Shania all night? She should sit next to every guest mentor from now on.) Ironically, when it came time to sing the Shania Twain songbook, the guys fared better than the two remaining women. Casey James got serious (and seriously good) with “Don’t!,” Aaron Kelly turned a song about making love into a tender tribute to his mama, and Lee Dewyze sang “You’re Still the One” softly UNTIL HE SHOUTED THE CHORUS. (Nothing says “I love you” like an aching eardrum.) Meanwhile, Michael Lynche’s “It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing” garnered raves from the judges and tears from Shania. (And with the way the exchange rate is going now, Canadian tears are worth about the same as American tears. So good job, Big Mike!) Unfortunately, the remaining ladies struggled with the country sound. Siobhan Magnus sang/shrieked “Any Man of Mine” while high-fiving audience members, and Crystal Bowersox hid behind a bluegrass band … except when it came time to air her dirty laundry out on live television. You see, her custom T-shirt-wearing, no-good boyfriend is dragging his feet when the word “marriage” comes up. (Cue “Single Ladies!”) Bummer that the backstory was far more engaging (no pun intended) than her throwaway performance. (The song had something to do with cupid. And being stupid.) The lesson is that Crystal can’t do everything, like making bluegrass cool and receiving criticism gracefully. On a “jam-packed” results show, Rascal Flatts performed their new single “All Our Songs Sound the Same (So Why Bother With a Title?).” Carrie Underwood pimped out her buddies Sons of Sylvia (formerly the Clark Brothers, formerly the Great American Band, formerly Hey Record Label Execs, You Can Change the Name of the Group All You Want But America Still Won’t Give a Crap). Then 19 Entertainment continued their frustrating habit of taking a perfectly good solo song and forcing it to be a duet for no reason whatsoever by making Shakira perform “Gypsy” with Gary LeVox. (To quote the Mighty Bowersox, “Bigger isn’t always better.”) Highlighting the fact that “Gypsy: The Duet” was pointless, Lady Antebellum showed up to sing an actual duet, their irresistible hit “Need You Now.” Four musical performances, an extended promo for “Shrek Forever After” and a vampire-themed Ford commercial later, the bottom three were revealed. Big Mike sat first, leaving Siobhan and Casey on the chopping block. Ultimately the Glassblower joined the elite club of People Who Had the Pimp Spot and Were Sent Home Anyway (chairwoman: Lilly Scott). Her farewell was pretty shocking and emotional, but let’s look at the bright side: At least her elimination caused a cameraman to run up to Casey James’ mother’s face, giving us a sassy reaction shot that was more entertaining than 99 percent of this season of “Idol.” If only we could vote for Mama Casey. Next week the top five will do Sinatra songs with the king of Sinatra impressions, Harry Connick, Jr. I wonder if he’ll bring his gun to rehearsals. In Memoriam: American Idol’s Newest Loser Siobhan Magnus

Thanks for nothing, nation. Last night on Idol , America’s horrible texters voted to release Siobhan Magnus to the principal’s office to wash the glue out of her mouth. Bastards! For irony, they muttered the lyrics to Shania’s “I’m Gonna Getcha Good” as they did the deed. Damn third-grade thugs. Hate you. But now is our time to cherish the weeks spent with Siobhan, recall her greatest hits, and ponder what could’ve been had she entered the Top 5. And scream and scream.
