‘American Idol’ Top 10 Begin ‘Beautiful Day’ With ‘Good Morning America’

Lee DeWyze, Crystal Bowersox and company strummed and belted through the rain in Central Park on Friday. By Christopher MacAllister Lee Dewyze and Crystal Bowersox perform on ABC’s ‘Good Morning America’ on Friday Photo: Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images With their signs and banners eagerly clutched in their hands, fans marched into Central Park to see “American Idol” season-nine winner Lee DeWyze and runner-up Crystal Bowersox chat with Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos about “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” before two 12-year-old girls competed and a guy who looked like Santa’s older brother competed in an “Idol” trivia quiz. And also to see all of the top 10 Idols perform for the “Good Morning America” Summer Concert Series on Friday (July 9). Crystal was the first one to perform, singing Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart” while strumming her guitar, of course. She did the song justice despite the slight spray of rain. Next up was Lee, again with a guitar, awaiting his time to shine amid the continuing showers. The crowd shouted their love for him, as he responded to their makeshift banners, wishing happy birthdays and anniversaries. Asked about the life-changing experience of winning “Idol,” he said it was “important to remember where you came from” and managed to plug the October release of his upcoming album. He then performed “Treat Her Like a Lady” by the Cornelius Brothers, to which the audience reacted with more enthusiasm and excitement. Then all of the top 10 took the stage and the band began the riff for Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life.” The guys gave their best for the rousing anthem, before the girls took over with “My Life Would Suck Without You” by Kelly Clarkson. The rain seemed to bring down the energy of some, Lee in particular, who almost seemed bored at times. But as all 10 sang the song as an ensemble, they gave it a powerful finish. Before the last song, Lee, Andrew Garcia and Michael Lynche began to beat box and rap for the slightly drenched crowd. But instead of capping off the set with another group performance, Lee went solo for his single, “Beautiful Day” — and fans didn’t seem to mind the irony of the bad weather. Actually, as one fan told MTV News, there more than one reason to consider it a beautiful day. “It was great to see the American Idols on stage together, and the rain was nice, as it has been so hot!” Related Photos ‘American Idol’ Season 9 Finalists Perform On ‘Good Morning America’ American Idol Season Nine Cast Glam Up For Tour

Who to Blame? The 5 Biggest Culprits in American Idol’s Worst Season

Even if Crystal Bowersox ranks among American Idol ‘s finest talents (and I believe she does), something’s rotten in the state of Seacrest this year. Last season, Idol rejuvenated itself with a blend of personalities — from subtle craftsman Kris Allen to sparkle sorcerer Adam Lambert. This season’s Idol cast is dogged by a number of distracting elements — and worst, the Idol -consuming populace is confused over the true culprits in this fiasco. Thus, we’re ranking the five biggest contributors to Idol ‘s weakest year. Hopefully number one will start to garner the skewering it deserves. Daggers ready!

Michael Lynche Eliminated from American Idol

American Idol may be an utter bore this season, but it can still deliver an emotional wallop at times. On last night’s results show, for example, Michael Lynche and Crystal Bowersox found themselves in the bottom two. After Ryan Seacrest revealed that Big Mike would be heading home, the tears started to flow. First, from Michael’s wife, cradling the couple’s newborn daughter. Then, from various audience members as Lynche sang Michael Jackson’s “Will You Be There” and, finally, from a certain celebrity gossip blogger’s living room. He just seemed really nice, okay?!? We’re down to Bowersox, Casey James and Lee DeWyze on the worst season in Idol history. Who do you hope takes home the crown? The night was not a total downer, of course. Bon Jovi, Daughtry and Fantasia all performed. Along with shots of Mike and Crystal, these artists are featured below:

American Idol’s Top 3

The four remaining contestants on American Idol performed at their best Tuesday night. They performed songs from Hollywood movies like Caddyshack and Free Willy. However, Wednesday on American Idol, one of them was eliminated. Meanwhile, the others will continue on the road to the finale. Michael Lynche ended his journey on Idol. Lynche is the physical trainer with the torso of a colossus and a voice built on a similar scale. Earlier in the season, the judges rescued Big Mike from elimination but this time, he had trouble gaining votes from the viewers. The three finalists are Casey James, Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersoc. They’ll be moving forward to the finale of American Idol. American Idol’s Top 3 is a post from: Daily World Buzz Continue reading

Bon Jovi Rock ‘American Idol’ With ‘Superman Tonight’

‘The harder we work, the luckier we get,’ Jon Bon Jovi says of group’s continued success. By Josh Wigler Jon Bon Jovi With Casey James and Lee Dewyze cleared to the top three and the fates of “American Idol” hopefuls Michael Lynche and Crystal Bowersox hanging in the balance, New Jersey rock band Bon Jovi flew to the “Idol” stage to provide a brief moment of respite from the audience’s nervous anticipation. Bon Jovi performed a blaring rendition of “Superman Tonight,” the second single from their 11th studio album, The Circle. In the past, frontman Jon Bon Jovi has described the song as “something like a diary of the observer, and I’m just the fly on the wall,” providing a suitable context for the musician’s role on Wednesday night’s (May 12) “American Idol”: While Bon Jovi himself is used to taking center stage, even his rocking presence couldn’t fully alleviate the crowd’s anxiety over who would be going home next, an unfortunate distinction that ultimately fell upon Lynche. Following the end of “Superman Tonight,” Ryan Seacrest spoke with Bon Jovi, lead guitarist Richie Sambora and the rest of the band’s roster to congratulate them not just on their performance, but on their status as “the #1 touring band in the world [and] another #1 album.” Asked how Bon Jovi are able to replicate their success year after year, Jon replied: “You know, hard work and good luck. Good friends who have put us in the right places. “We’re humbled. We’ve crossed generations at this point,” Bon Jovi said amid wild applause from the young audience. “It’s really great. The sky’s the limit. The harder we work, the luckier we get — that’s pretty much the way it is.” What did you think of Bon Jovi’s performance on “American Idol”? Let us know in the comments! ‘American Idol’ Report Card: Who Was A Star On Movie Night?

Crystal earns an Excellent grade for her ‘Caddyshack’ cover; Big Mike’s ‘Free Willy’ fails. By Eric Ditzian Crystal Bowersox performs on “American Idol” Tuesday Photo: FOX The numbers in our “American Idol” classroom are dwindling, and that’s forcing producers to get creative. Thus Tuesday night’s Songs of Cinema theme introduced a dose of group work into the live show, as the top four contestants sang a couple of duets in addition to their familiar individual efforts. The ensembles proved to be the night’s saving grace. Before we dole out the grades, we’ve got an extra credit question for the “Idol” conspiracy theorists among you: What was the thinking behind pairing Crystal Bowersox with Lee Dewyze and Michael Lynche with Casey James? Hmmmm. And how about a bonus extra-credit question: What does it mean that for three out of the four contestants, their duets were far superior to their solo performances? In any event, “American Idol” is a competition for individuals, and the singers must be graded on this basic fact: How did each one fair? That’s exactly what we plan do as we push forward with another edition of our “American Idol” report card. (And don’t miss Jim Cantiello’s recap of their performances in the MTV Newsroom.) Excellent Crystal Bowersox : Her blown-glass mic stand was back, and so was MamaSox! After two straight weeks of adequate, if not revelatory, performances, the 24-year-old stormed back with a truly unlikely performance. A song from freakin’ “Caddyshack” ? Really? And yet, the country-rock makeover she gave Kenny Loggins’ “I’m Alright” simply worked. By now we hardly have to mention that her vocals were on point; they’re always on point. And then her duet with Dewyze (“Falling Slowly” from “Once”) showed off such easy chemistry, such likability, we’d say she might just have locked up the competition. But we already knew that, right? Good Casey James : Casey probably should have known better, picking “Mrs. Robinson” after his entire story arc this season has boiled down to a cougar-rific connection to Kara DioGuardi. Wise or not, the song — with its mandolin-driven bluegrass feel — was a pleasing choice that stayed well within James’ vocal abilities. Was it a bit lazy, as Simon Cowell suggested? Perhaps. But we’d take a few more weeks of “Mrs. Robinson”-esque ditties rather than James back in his bar-band rocker mode. Meanwhile, his duet with Big Mike of Bryan Adams’ “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?” was an even stronger performance. It’s going to be very interesting to see what happens between these two singers come elimination time. Satisfactory Lee Dewyze : We’ve known for a long time now that Dewyze suffers from persistent pitch problems. Have those deficiencies ever been on display as glaringly as they were during Seal’s “Kiss From a Rose”? As the judges pointed out, that tune is a crazily difficult one to pull off, and Dewyze simply wasn’t up to the challenge. He did little to change up the tune, and while we wouldn’t go so far as to label the performance “karaoke” — as Cowell did — we will say that it was a colossal disappointment from a singer who’s supposed to be giving Bowersox a run for the “Idol” crown. Luckily for him, he was paired with MamaSox for his duet, and he rode her dreadlocks to the highest praise of the evening. Unsatisfactory Michael Lynche : Big Mike gives us our toughest call of the night. Was he merely OK during Michael Jackson’s “Will You Be There,” or truly subpar? We enjoyed the gospel choir backing him up, but there’s no getting away from the roller-coaster path of his vocals from beginning to end. But in the end, Big Mike ends up at the bottom of our grading curve for making the worst song choice of the evening. Even Ellen DeGeneres couldn’t help but mock the selection, calling “Free Willy” “one of the classic, great movies of all time.” If you believe that one, you might also believe that Big Mike has a shot at winning “Idol” season nine. Lee Dewyze Gets Back In The ‘American Idol’ Race With ‘That’s Life’

‘If this was the last night of performances, you would have won this whole thing,’ Ellen says on Sinatra Night. By Larry Carroll Lee Dewyze on “American Idol” Tuesday Photo: Fox When Frank Sinatra sang “That’s Life,” the song became a masterpiece, a devil-may-care case study in the art of cool, careless crooning about enduring the bad days. On Tuesday night (May 4), Lee Dewyze made the song his own, simultaneously conquering his own demons and the specter of the Chairman of the Board. The spiky-haired “American Idol” dark horse took on a signature tune from Ol’ Blue Eyes for the show, with necktie appropriately undone. Accompanied on a Hammond organ by mentor Harry Connick Jr., Dewyze straddled the top of the instrument as if paying tribute to the bar-embracing persona of Sinatra, backed by a bluesy band. Although feisty Frank likely wouldn’t have endorsed Dewyze’s untucked shirt, he could surely appreciate the way the 26-year-old Illinois singer poured himself into lines like “Each time I find myself flat on my face/ I pick myself up and get back in the race.” With the performance, Dewyze undoubtedly put himself back into the heat of the “Idol” race. “If this was the last night of performances,” judge Ellen Degeneres beamed with approval, “you would have won this whole thing.” “You gave it a 110 percent,” Simon Cowell agreed. “It was the best performance of the night.” “Another great arrangement by a Louisiana boy,” Randy Jackson said of Connick’s efforts. “You stayed your rocker self. I loved it.” “You can win this thing,” Kara DioGuardi said, before urging Dewyze to go home and write down “I can win this thing” 100 times. Originally composed by Dean Kay and Kelly Gordon for Sinatra’s album of the same name, “That’s Life” was a huge hit when it debuted in 1966. In the years since, the song has been covered by everyone from Bono to Aretha Franklin to David Lee Roth, and now, perhaps the next American Idol. What did you think of Lee’s performance?
