Casey James’ ‘American Idol’ Exit Not A Surprise, Experts Say

‘The writing was on the wall for Casey since last week’s results show,’ declared MTV News’ Jim Cantiello. By Gil Kaufman Casey James Photo: FOX You didn’t need to be a weatherman to know which way the wind was blowing for Casey James on Wednesday night. With the judges practically placing the crown on Lee DeWyze’s head the previous evening and Crystal Bowersox riding a season-long wave of hype and good cheer, James seemed destined to be the odd man out. Our experts called it , and on Thursday morning, they were feeling bullish about being right and predicting the first mixed-gender finale in four seasons. “The writing was on the wall for Casey since last week’s results show,” declared MTV News’ Jim Cantiello. “He knew he had no chance going up against Crystal ‘Early Fave’ Bowersox and Lee ‘Chosen One’ DeWyze, and if he didn’t, he should have realized he was being set up to fail with Kara and Randy’s song choice. As soon as he heard the words ‘ “Daughters” by John Mayer’ he needed to dig deep and figure out a way to wow the judges and the viewers with his personal choice.” Instead, Cantiello noted, James chose an obscure song by little-known singer Eric Hutchinson that left “even less impact than Mayer’s sleepy tune.” If nothing else, Jim appreciated Casey’s honesty when he deviated from heaping praise on the judges like Crystal and Lee did and told host Ryan Seacrest that not all of their critiques were useful. Our other expert, MJ Santilli of “Idol” fan site MJsbigblog.com , also called Casey’s ouster and agreed that it was expected after James submarined himself with the Hutchinson pick. “No way that boring Eric Hutchinson song was going to propel him into the finals,” she said. “If he’d picked something bluesy and upbeat, it would have complemented the ballad Kara and Randy gave him. But, maybe there was nothing Casey could do to dodge the bus that was coming for him. The producers were gunning for a Crystal/Lee final, and they made sure they got it. Crystal and Lee got better judges’ songs, performance order spots, lighting and stage sets. Casey knew he was going home.” Santilli noted that the message James posted to fans on his Facebook page earlier in the day had a whiff of a goodbye to it, and his calm demeanor when getting the news on the show seemed to indicate he sensed his fate. “Maybe Crystal and Lee won the night, but Casey created one of the sweetest moments of season nine when he picked up that little girl during his ‘Daughters’ sing-out,” she said of the audience member James sat on his knee and sang to during his curtain call. In Memoriam: American Idol’s Casey James

I’m sad. Sure. But I also want to hold up my old Illinois driver’s license with Norma Rae grit and proclaim, “Take that, American South!” For only the second time in American Idol ‘s history, its Final Two has no connections to the dusty south. That’s not good or bad, but it’s a welcome change of pace. (No offense to Kris Allen — I voted for you, tender dawg!) Now, to attend to the business at hand: Our deceased pony Casey James enjoyed a resilient run, establishing himself as season nine’s resident dark horse . His proudest moments involved simple ballads, sincerity, and keeping his shirt on. Let’s reflect on the Cool, Texas, native’s curvy, paisley-print journey on American Idol and guess what might’ve been had he made the finale.

Lee DeWyze’s Friends Confident He’ll Make ‘American Idol’ Finale

‘There is no doubt in my mind, and never has been, that this kid is going to the finale,’ Amy Silverman tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman Lee DeWyze Photo: FOX Nobody wants to get too cocky, because, well, you never know how America is going to act, but on Wednesday morning (May 19), Lee DeWyze’s supporters were feeling pretty bullish about the former paint-store clerk ‘s chances of making it to the “American Idol” finale next week. “Seriously? What can I say, but unbelievable!” said Amy Silverman, Lee’s close friend and former teacher at Forest View Alternative school, which the 24-year-old singer attended after dropping out of his more traditional high school. “He is truly the greatest that has ever been on that stage, and he proved that last night with ‘Simple Man’ and ‘Hallelujah’ ! We had over 500 people that filled the entire restaurant/bar . Goose bumps and tears were flowing throughout the entire place.” Silverman said she could not stop shedding tears of pride and joy at seeing how far the onetime troubled teen has come. “The thing about Lee is, he touches every single person that listens to him … from 5-year-olds to 85-year-olds. … There is no doubt in my mind, and never has been, that this kid is going to the finale, and I am honored to be able to be there, watching with pride and excitement!” Brian Friedopfer, an old friend of Lee’s who has watched his pal sing “Simple Man” for years in karaoke bars and at shows, said he was shaking for an hour after Tuesday night’s show. “I was just so happy for him. It’s about time,” Friedopfer said of watching the breakout performance night he knew was coming from his friend. “I was speechless. My wife and I were watching [the ‘Hallelujah’ cover] together, and we looked at each other and were like, ‘Wow!’ We rewound it and watched it again and said, ‘Holy crap!’ I’ve never heard him sing that song, and I was a bit worried about it when he told me that Simon chose it for him.” But Lee reassured Friedopfer that he could tackle the iconic Leonard Cohen tune that has famously been covered by everyone from the late Jeff Buckley to former “Idol” contestants Jason Castro and Tim Urban. “Before he started, I was really nervous, but as soon as he started singing, I was like, ‘Wow.’ I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “When I was in Los Angeles during Elvis Week , he joked that at some point, he would have a full choir behind him for one song, and of course, he pulled it out the week before the finale!” The performances left Friedopfer convinced that Lee will make it to the finale — well, assuming America wasn’t so blown away they forgot to vote. “He should be there, but it’s anybody’s game, because people are finicky,” he said. “Especially since they basically crowned him last night, he might have lost votes because of that. But people like an underdog, and it would be a shame if he wasn’t in the finale.” Do you think Lee is a lock for the finale? Let us know in the comments! Adam Lambert Predicts Crystal Bowersox Will Win ‘American Idol’

‘I like her anti-establishment rebelliousness,’ the ‘American Idol’ runner-up says of MamaSox. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Matt Elias Adam Lambert Photo: MTV News Back in April, after a mentoring gig on “American Idol” had people buzzing that he should replace Simon Cowell behind the judges’ table next season, Adam Lambert revealed to MTV News which contestants he thought the most promising: Crystal Bowersox, Casey James, Lee DeWyze and Michael Lynche. [T]hose four really stand out as authentic, pure, amazing vocals,” Lambert said at the time. A month later, with Big Mike now out of the picture and Bowersox, James and DeWyze comprising this season’s top three, Lambert has come out in support of Bowersox to win the competition. “If I had to pick one out of those three, I’d probably lean more toward Crystal at this point,” he told us. “I like her anti-establishment rebelliousness.” In that choice, he’s echoing the consensus opinion that this season is Bowersox’s to lose. But, in fact, Lambert hasn’t had a chance to see what’s been going down on “Idol” in recent weeks. After a short, Icelandic volcano-induced delay in his travel plans, the season eight runner-up jetted off to Europe, where he performed in England, Holland and Finland. “I’ve been gone,” he said. “I haven’t been able to watch it.” Though he singled out MamaSox for special recognition, Lambert made sure to pay respects to all the remaining contestants, who face off again on Tuesday night (May 18), after enjoying hometown visits late last week. “All three of them are excellent singers,” he said. “They’re all really organic and kind of authentic in what they do. They’re all likeable. They were all really nice when I met them on set.” Who’s your favorite to win “Idol”? Let us know in the comments! Bon Jovi Rock ‘American Idol’ With ‘Superman Tonight’

‘The harder we work, the luckier we get,’ Jon Bon Jovi says of group’s continued success. By Josh Wigler Jon Bon Jovi With Casey James and Lee Dewyze cleared to the top three and the fates of “American Idol” hopefuls Michael Lynche and Crystal Bowersox hanging in the balance, New Jersey rock band Bon Jovi flew to the “Idol” stage to provide a brief moment of respite from the audience’s nervous anticipation. Bon Jovi performed a blaring rendition of “Superman Tonight,” the second single from their 11th studio album, The Circle. In the past, frontman Jon Bon Jovi has described the song as “something like a diary of the observer, and I’m just the fly on the wall,” providing a suitable context for the musician’s role on Wednesday night’s (May 12) “American Idol”: While Bon Jovi himself is used to taking center stage, even his rocking presence couldn’t fully alleviate the crowd’s anxiety over who would be going home next, an unfortunate distinction that ultimately fell upon Lynche. Following the end of “Superman Tonight,” Ryan Seacrest spoke with Bon Jovi, lead guitarist Richie Sambora and the rest of the band’s roster to congratulate them not just on their performance, but on their status as “the #1 touring band in the world [and] another #1 album.” Asked how Bon Jovi are able to replicate their success year after year, Jon replied: “You know, hard work and good luck. Good friends who have put us in the right places. “We’re humbled. We’ve crossed generations at this point,” Bon Jovi said amid wild applause from the young audience. “It’s really great. The sky’s the limit. The harder we work, the luckier we get — that’s pretty much the way it is.” What did you think of Bon Jovi’s performance on “American Idol”? Let us know in the comments! Joss Stone And Jeff Beck Get Steamy On ‘Idol Gives Back’

British duo put a bluesy twist on ‘I Put a Spell on You’ for the fundraising effort. By James Montgomery Joss Stone (file) Photo: Ian Gavan/ Getty Images Wednesday night’s (April 21) “Idol Gives Back” event featured performances by everyone from the Black Eyed Peas to Annie Lennox, but it was a pair of Brits — and a swampy, often-overlooked American tune that pre-dates most rock and roll — that ended up being one of the night’s most memorable moments. Singer Joss Stone and legendary guitarist Jeff Beck turned in a simmering, smoky take on Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ 1956 stomper “I Put a Spell on You” — a song that has been covered by a lengthy list of artists, including Nina Simone and Shane McGowan — which managed to take the soulful, primal urges of the original (and most of the covers) and infuse them with both blues and R&B. Backed by the Jubilation Choir, and aided by a four-piece band, Stone and Beck let the song build to a boil, with the 23-year-old Stone starting out sparse, then gradually adding more gravel and gut to her voice, while Beck added flecks of bluesy guitar that eventually erupted into a fret-bending, note-melding solo. The tune grew and grew, with Stone — dressed in a silver, floor-length gown — vamping across the stage, bending low to draw the notes out of her lungs, while the choir added ominous backup, and Beck, the old pro playing it cool, guiding the song with his reserved, almost flirtatious playing. Eventually, when things got too hot, Beck, the band and the choir all fell away, leaving only Stone to take the song home. And with one great, breathy bellow, she did just that, going low once again, letting the grit come to the forefront. And as she wailed, Beck brought the band back in to wrap it all up. And as the audience cheered, the duo embraced in the middle of the stage. What did you think of Joss and Jeff’s duet? Let us know in the comments below! Tim Urban Sent Packing During ‘Idol Gives Back’

Elimination came after a night of all-star performances and fundraising pleas. By Gil Kaufman Tim Urban on “American Idol” (file) Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Wednesday night’s (April 21) “American Idol” was focused on “Idol Gives Back,” so the two-hour-plus show devoted most of the airtime to raising funds for children’s charities with a series of celebrity pleas and performances from Mary J. Blige , Carrie Underwood, Elton John, the Black Eyed Peas and several others. But there was an elimination to take care of, and after visiting the bottom three on three earlier occasions, the sand finally ran out of the hourglass for Texas singer Tim Urban. A Look Back At Tim Urban’s ‘Idol’ Journey With help from comedian George Lopez, the first step toward cutting the group down to six came with a role reversal, as Lopez judged the judges for a change. He told Randy Jackson to come up with something to say besides “pitchy” and encouraged Kara DioGuardi to formulate her own thoughts, giving both of them a pass and declaring them safe. Addressing his pal Ellen DeGeneres, whom he faulted for loving too much, and Simon Cowell, whose size-small T-shirts and flirtation with Ryan Seacrest he mocked, Lopez gave Ellen the pass but said Cowell had to return to England immediately. Because of the Icelandic volcano, though, he said Cowell could hang out. That made way for Ryan Seacrest to call Casey James and Crystal Bowersox center stage, where he sent James to the bottom three for the first time this season after a lackluster Fleetwood Mac cover. MamaSox was sent back to safety after her emotional performance on Tuesday night. Next up were Lee Dewyze and Aaron Kelly, with the high-schooler taking a seat next to James in the bottom three after a lukewarm response from the judges for his cover of R. Kelly’s “I Believe I Can Fly.” Siobhan Magnus, Michael Lynche and Urban were the last group to face Seacrest, with Urban ending up in the bottom three yet again after America agreed with Ellen that his rendition of the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Better Days” just wasn’t their cup of soup. With the show running more than 20 minutes over, the elimination was finally due, as Seacrest sent Kelly to safety yet again, followed by James. Calling Tim the “comeback kid,” Seacrest stood next to the always-smiling mop-topped singer. As he watched his goodbye segment, Urban was surrounded by the final six, though he did not get a chance to sing one more time, likely because of the show running so far over. Next week’s mentor will be country icon Shania Twain, and the remaining six-pack will choose from her songs during Tuesday night’s performance show. What did you think of Tim Urban’s elimination? Mary J. Blige Builds A ‘Stairway To Heaven’ For ‘Idol Gives Back’

Singer is joined by Travis Barker, Orianthi, Steve Vai and even ‘Idol’ judge Randy Jackson for Led Zeppelin cover. By Larry Carroll Mary J. Blige (file) Photo: Rick Diamond/ Getty Images As always, the “Idol Gives Back” episode of America’s most popular show was filled with emotional moments, genuine sentiment and water-cooler-worthy performances. But once the smoke cleared and the charity work had been nobly performed, it was clear that the evening’s highlight revolved around an all-star band, a rock classic and a Stairway to Heaven. Mary J. Blige and her all-star band of Travis Barker, Orianthi and Steve Vai — along with “Idol” judge Randy Jackson laying down bass guitar — performed a touching rendition of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.” It was an epic moment in a tender night of compassion, philanthropy and memorable performances. Accompanied by the same band that supported her on a recent career-makeover effort in the recording studio, Blige’s cover appeared on the international re-release of her album Stronger With Each Tear, which came out in March. “I am a Led Zeppelin fan,” Blige told MTV News recently. “I’m not going to say I’ve been to their concerts, but I’ve listened to their music since I was a child, and it’s always moved me, especially ‘Stairway to Heaven.’ ” She certainly was on Wednesday night (April 21), as the audience seemed thrilled with the performance — and saw her get away with something even Wayne Campbell could not. “Heaven” was composed by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant for the band’s classic fourth album — dubbed Led Zeppelin IV by their fans — and in the ’70s ranked as the single most-requested song on FM radio stations. Recorded in 1970, “Stairway” has gone on to become one of the all-time great rock anthems. Other stars illuminating the evening’s “Idol Gives Back” festivities included Jennifer Garner, Queen Latifah, Elton John, the Black Eyed Peas and the president himself, Barack Obama. According to an announcement made by Simon Cowell during the show, the evening’s festivities had raised over $15 million for charity. What did you think of Mary’s Zeppelin cover?
