‘American Idol’ Experts Predict The Boot For Casey James Or Aaron Kelly

Despite shaky performances, Tim Urban and Michael Lynche should be safe. By Gil Kaufman Casey James Photo: Fox The theme on Tuesday night’s “American Idol” was inspirational songs, but with the exception of Crystal Bowersox’s tearful “People Get Ready,” many of the night’s performances were uninspired at best. While that might make picking who could be eliminated during Wednesday night’s (April 21) “Idol Gives Back” charity extravaganza harder, for MTV News’ “Idol” expert Jim Cantiello , the choice is clear. ” ‘Jealous Guy’ notwithstanding, Casey James’ performances have all been the same thing over and over again,” Cantiello said of the pony-tailed Texas guitar slinger, who has carved out a blues-rock niche on the show. “It was only a matter of time before America grew impatient with his lack of growth. Furthermore, it was a night that was supposed to inspire, and thanks to passionate performances from Lee Dewyze and especially Crystal Bowersox it definitely did uplift the spirit at times, but Casey left me stone-cold.” Cantiello said he didn’t have a visceral reaction to James’ cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop” the way he did to equally shaky performances from Tim Urban and Aaron Kelly, who he also predicted would land in the bottom three alongside James. “It’s never a good thing to go first and deliver a forgettable sound-alike performance,” he said of James. “But what tipped me off to Casey’s impending departure? The crowd didn’t boo Kara, Randy or Ellen when they panned his performance. You could hear a pin drop. Casey had obviously put the entire studio audience to sleep.” The view was a bit cloudier for MJ Santilli, founder of the “Idol” fan site MJsBigBlog.com . She thought “Teflon” Tim Urban got ambitious with his cover of the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Better Days,” which got universal pans from the judge’s panel for failing to live up to his more solid performances over the past two weeks. “But I still think he’s amassed enough of a following to keep him safe this week,” she said, adding that she thinks Michael Lynche “is probably not long for this world, but he performed near the end of the lineup, and when Simon Cowell makes statements like ‘You’ll probably still be here next week,’ they usually come true.” And while she found James to be “safe and boring,” she thought his fan base was strong enough to keep him in it, so it was perennially on-the-bubble teen Aaron Kelly who she targeted as this week’s boot-ee. “[He’s] been on the cusp the past couple of weeks,” she noted of the sometimes awkward high schooler, who failed to deliver sufficient emotion on his take of R. Kelly’s “I Believe I Can Fly.” “Once again, he bit off more than he could chew last night. And even though he gave it a good try, it was a mediocre vocal and an awkward performance. I think he’ll be heading back to smalltown Pennsylvania very soon.” One things is for sure, MJ said: After coming close to seriously turning off “Idol” hardcores with news that she was on the verge of quitting the show, Bowersox’s bravura performance brought her all the way back into their good graces. “She came back with a fantastic performance, showed some vulnerability — finally — and even, wordlessly made amends with Seacrest,” said MJ. “Honestly, she’s going to be hard to beat at this point. And it’s not as if any one of the remaining seven comes close to her talent, confidence, and performance skills.” What do you think of our experts’ predictions? Do you agree? Disagree? American Idol Recap: Who ‘Inspired’ Us Most?

Last night, American Idol battered us with selections from its most syrupy set list yet: Inspirational Songs. Run, Bowersox! Rod Stewart wouldn’t touch half of this nonsense in a “Great American Songbook” package, and lord, that says it all. Still, we got seven performances, seven consultations with the catatonic Alicia Keys, and one obvious winner. Our rankings and video after the jump.

Is Kara DioGuardi the Best Judge on American Idol?

American Idol ‘s current season of contestants is spottier than a D.I.Y. dye-job., but the judging panel isn’t exactly a cohesive powerhouse either. Between Randy Jackson, Ellen DeGeneres, and Simon Cowell, critiques have been vague, pandering, and suspiciously biased , respectively. Meanwhile, Kara DioGuardi has improved from her first season, now ably diagnosing issues with song choices and artistic intention. Could the withering backlash against her have had more to do with her sometimes-cloying way of addressing the contestants than with her views themselves? Here are three advantages Kara has over her fellow judges:

American Idol Recap: Who’s Leaving the Building?

American Idol handed its nine remaining contestants a formidable task: Perform an Elvis hit and have it sound fresh and fancy-free and Ke$ha-flavored for the more happenin’ preteens. Sounds doable, right? Except totally impossible? Right. Luckily, the surviving balladeers were also granted the help of Adam Lambert, who established himself as the best mentor of the season. But the real judging is up to us: Which two contestants ‘return to sender’ during tomorrow’s results show? Movieline’s rankings pile up after the jump.

Michael Lynche’s Save: ‘American Idol’ Experts, Fans Weigh In

‘Bad decision with this many weeks left!’ one MTV reader writes. By Gil Kaufman Photo: Ray Mickshaw / FOX For once, “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest wasn’t exaggerating when he promised that Wednesday night’s results show would be a shocker . On a night when many predicted that Aaron Kelly’s “Idol” journey would be coming to a halt , instead it was burly personal trainer and new dad Michael Lynche facing the sing of shame. Lynche, who has emerged as one of the strongest contenders in an otherwise lackluster season nine, pulled out his big guns in an attempt to stay in the mix, reprising his lauded cover of Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work” and earning the season’s only save. He was on the chopping block despite a mostly praised R&B spin on “Eleanor Rigby” on Tuesday night. “I was absolutely shocked,” Rickey Yaneza, webmaster of the “Idol” fan site Rickey.org , said about Lynche landing in the bottom three alongside Kelly and Andrew Garcia. “I didn’t think he’d end up getting the least amount of votes, but I think they made the right call.” Yaneza said Lynche’s “Woman’s Work” was one of the best performances of the season so far, and the reprise was more than enough to earn his spot back. As for what happened to put Lynche in the crosshairs, Yaneza speculated that the brawny singer’s fans may have gotten complacent, while supporters of Kelly and Garcia pulled it together and rallied enough votes to keep them in the competition. “Aaron and Andrew’s fans worked their butts off overnight knowing their guys were in trouble,” he said, noting that Lynche’s fanbase has never been as strong as those for other on-the-bubble contestants such as Kelly, Garcia and “Teflon” Tim Urban. MTV’s own “Idol” disciple, Jim Cantiello, was surprised that the judges used their one-and-only save for Lynche, assuming they’d save it for one of the other front-runners. “Given the way this season is going, I assumed they’d only use it on Crystal Bowersox or perhaps Lee Dewyze,” he said. “Michael was a likable guy, but he’s been railed for giving overdramatic performances. Tuesday night, he went way over the top and Simon was quite vocal in his disapproval. So for 24 hours later to have passed and now the judges are unanimous in giving this guy another shot? It was unexpected.” Cantiello disagreed with the move, saying Lynche had reverted back to his “over-emotive” habits. “After his results-show interview where he told Seacrest that people should just download his studio recordings if they’re not feeling his onstage antics?” Cantiello said. “That right there proves he has no intention of pulling back. America wasn’t feeling his dinner-theater performance style, voted him off, and then the judges gave him a free pass to keep doing what he’s doing. If he doesn’t tone it down next week, he’ll be the lowest vote-getter all over again.” MTV readers reacted strongly to the drama, with Kevin writing, “Now what do they do if someone that is talented and could have a future in the business like Crystal doesn’t get enough votes one week? Bad decision with this many weeks left!” Rick took a more academic approach, arguing that the judges shouldn’t have saved Lynche because “when your vote total is that low, then your fanbase is highly unlikely to carry you through and you’re going home within the next few weeks anyway. I don’t think you break out the save until there is seven or even six left. In that case you could potentially save the winner.” MJ Santilli, who runs the “Idol” fan site MJsBigBlog.com , isn’t a fan of the save in general, feeling that the “Idol” chips should fall where they may with no interference from the judges. “Surprise boots are part of the ‘Idol’ experience. Everyone gets over it and moves on,” she said. “So I’m happy to have it out of the way for the season.” That said, if the save has to be deployed, she was fine with Lynche being the beneficiary. “There are at least four contestants who should be heading out the door before Mike Lynche: Aaron Kelly, Andrew Garcia, Katie Stevens and Tim Urban have all had spotty track records, at best, on the ‘Idol’ stage,” she said. “Plus, Mike is one of the few contestants left with decent performance skills, and now that Paige Miles is gone, he’s the only R&B singer in the group.” Santilli was also surprised at Lynche’s elimination because she figured his fanbase wasn’t being split with any of the other contestants. But the problem now, she said, was that if one of the other front-runners — such as Bowersox, Dewyze or Siobhan Magnus — is eliminated in the next few weeks, the judges can’t do a thing about it. “And there goes that feel-good save they could have used during ‘Idol Gives Back,’ ” she lamented. Jon Gosselin Makes Good on Lawsuit Threat, Kate Gosselin Calls Out "Pathetic" Maneuver

A man of his word, Jon Gosselin made good on a threat to file legal papers asking a Pennsylvania judge for primary custody of his children with Kate Gosselin. Jon also wants the child support order that is currently in place – in which the huge douchebag is on the hook for a huge sum every month – reviewed by the judge. Jon claims the arbitrator in the divorce “failed to take into consideration the numerous factors provided for by the law in PA.” Such as Jon being a broke loser? His lawyer, Anthony F. List, said earlier this week that Kate is an “absentee mom” and that her being on Dancing with the Stars is the latest, flagrant example. Team Kate hit back that Jon’s attempt to win custody is “pathetic.” The worst part about this custody fight? Someone has to win. Mark Momjian, her attorney, hit back at him , saying Jon’s motives are transparent: “He’s never questioned her ability to provide for their children. He’s out of the limelight, while 23 million people are watching Kate on Dancing with the Stars .” Way to get in an irrelevant dig there about who’s more famous. Momjian adds, more validly, how it’s ironic that Kate is effectively the breadwinner, but when she goes to earn a living he then says she’s not caring for the kids. The lawyer defended Kate’s parenting and says the legal documents filed by Jon are so “incoherent” and flawed that he expects the judge to throw the case out. Momjian says that Jon Gosselin, who owes $20,000 a month in support and may be simply looking for a way to circumvent that, is out for Jon alone, adding: “Do I think his motivation is the children’s best interest. Squarely no.” Who should have custody of the Gosselin children?

Michael Lynche: Saved by the Judges!

Phew. That was close. Due to a collective, nationwide brain fart, Michael Lynche found himself in the bottom three last night on American Idol . Once Aaron Kelly was deemed safe, Lynche then found himself in the bottom two alongside Andrew Garcia – and then the bottom one! Granted, Big Mike’s rendition of “Eleanor Rigby” on Tuesday was overblown and far from his best. But, unlike viewers around the country, the judges were willing to give Lynche another shot: they unanimously voted to save him from elimination. Think they made the right call? The excitement, and flamboyance, on American Idol will be ratcheted up next week: Adam Lambert will mentor the contestants. Regarding anyone’s fears, Adam Tweeted this week: “Don’t worry America: I will be beyond family friendly. Relax and enjoy. For Your Entertainment.”

‘American Idol’ Judges Save Michael Lynche

He was joined by Andrew Garcia and Aaron Kelly in this week’s bottom three. By James Montgomery Michael Lynche on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: Fox On Tuesday night’s “American Idol,” we had extended didgeridoo bellowing, a winsome bagpiper slowly descending a staircase and a dude bounding onstage to embrace Siobhan Magnus. How would Wednesday’s (April 7) results show top all that WTF-ness? With a controversial judges’ save, of course! Viewers decreed that it was big-hearted (and equally big-bodied) crooner Michael Lynche’s turn to go — a bit of a shock after the “Idol” judges praised his reworking of the Beatles’ “Eleanor Ribgy” — and as the studio audience howled their disapproval, Lynche strode to the center of the stage and belted out a version of Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work,” the same song that brought judge Kara DioGuardi to tears a few weeks earlier. As Lynche finished, the audience cheered wildly, his wife wept, and the judges conferred. Simon Cowell played the drama to the hilt, speaking in slow, pregnant pauses as the room fell deathly quiet. “The frustrating thing is, Michael, is that we all wish you did something like that yesterday, and this is why you’re in the position you’re in right now,” Cowell said. “We only have one save in the competition. This is unanimous, Michael, if it’s any comfort, and we have decided we’re going to see you next week.” With that, the audience squealed with delight (Lynche’s wife nearly leapt out of her dress), and the man dubbed “Big Mike” was mobbed by his fellow “Idol” contestants. Even the judges seemed to be excited, giving him a standing ovation as Lynche pounded his chest and blew kisses to his wife. Lynche’s save, of course, means that two “Idol” hopefuls will be getting the boot next week, and we suspect things will be a lot less jovial then. Wednesday’s bottom three was made up entirely of guys — Lynche, Andrew Garcia and Aaron Kelly — a fact “Idol” producers didn’t reveal until more than 30 minutes into the show and only after performances by Jason Der
