Michael Lynche was rescued by the show#39;s judges five weeks ago, but he received the fewest viewer votes following his predictable rendition of Michael Jackson#39;s “Will You Be There” from “Free Willy” on Tuesday#39;s movie-themed edition. The credits have rolled on “American Idol” finalist Michael Lynche. Michael Lynche ,26-year-old personal trainer from Queens, N.Y., was cut from the ninth season of the Fox singing competition Wednesday. “It was tough,” said the soulful Lynche. “It#39;s

Michael Lynche Sent Packing On ‘American Idol’

The judges used their ‘save’ on Big Mike five weeks ago, carrying him all the way to the final four. By James Montgomery Michael Lynche on “American Idol” Wednesday This week on “American Idol,” the final four tackled the songs of the silver screen , and somewhat fittingly, Wednesday night’s (May 12) elimination show was a dramatic ride, one that kept the audience guessing until the last moment. Most assumed front-runners Lee Dewyze and Crystal Bowersox would make it through to the top three, especially following their much-praised duet on “Falling Slowly” (from the Oscar-winning “Once”). Knowing this, “Idol” producers left both hopefuls in the lurch, instead revealing that Casey James — who, once again, seemed to be the favorite to be sent packing after he plucked his way through a version of “Mrs. Robinson” — would be moving on to next week’s show. That left Bowersox, Dewyze and Michael Lynche staring down the specter of elimination, though host Ryan Seacrest quickly announced that Dewyze would be joining James in the top three. (Of course, he did so by announcing: “Friends, Lee is headed back to Chicago” — a reference to the show’s annual visits to the top three’s hometowns — which most in the crowd seemed to interpret as meaning Dewyze had been booted from the show, at least judging by the gasps in the room.) That meant that either Bowersox or Lynche would be sent packing — and after even more drama (in the form of a Bon Jovi performance and a pair of commercial breaks), we finally found out for whom the bell tolled. It was Lynche, who couldn’t overcome his rather lackluster performance of Michael Jackson’s “Will You be There” (from “Free Willy”). When his name was called, Lynche — in keeping with his big-hearted demeanor — wasn’t bitter. In fact, he thanked the judges for saving him five weeks ago and said that he’ll leave “Idol” with only fond memories. “It’s been unbelievable, man. I just sit here right now, and I think, ‘I wasn’t even supposed to be here,’ ” Lynche told Seacrest. “Thank God for the judges saving me. I got to spend more time here, be with the people … it’s all good, man.” And with that, he performed the “Free Willy” song once again. It wasn’t exactly a Hollywood ending, but we’ll take it. Now, on to the top three. Were you sad to see Big Mike go? Let us know in the comments. ‘American Idol’ Experts Predict The End (Again) For Michael Lynche

Casey James and Aaron Kelly will likely join him in the bottom three. By Gil Kaufman Michael Lynche Photo: FOX He might have gotten the judges’ save a few weeks ago, but time appears to have run out for brawny personal trainer Michael Lynche — at least according to MTV’s “American Idol” experts. “I think it’s finally Big Mike Lynche’s time to go,” said MJ Santilli, webmaster of the “Idol” fan site MJsBigBlog.com . “He sang a very competent version of [Shania Twain’s] ‘It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing,’ but unfortunately, Aaron Kelly and Casey James, two other contestants on the cusp, stepped it up this week.” Lynche got mostly positive notes from the judges — except Simon Cowell, who cryptically called the performance “wet” and “girly” — and he brought mentor Twain to tears, but even his Luther Vandross-like take on the songs might not have been enough to push him past other audience favorites. “Aaron had all the grandmas and mommies heading for the tissues first and then their phones to vote after he transformed Twain’s romantic ballad, ‘It’s in the Way You Love Me,’ into an ode to his adoptive mother,” Santilli said. “And Casey James went back to the thing that works for him — wrapping his country growl around a tender ballad.” Santilli thinks Kelly and James will join Lynche in the bottom three, but it will be Big Mike who gets sent home. MTV News’ “Idol” obsessive, Jim Cantiello, had to agree. “All the good will from the judges’ save has dissipated, and we’re left with a performance that viewers may feel like they’ve seen before,” he said. “There was a lot of hoopla from most of the judges about how well Michael connected to the song, but by the end of the episode, Casey and even Aaron managed to perform their songs in a more believable way.” Yes, Twain was driven to tears by Lynche, but Cantiello isn’t sure voters were moved in the same way. “Remember: The guy first went home after a similarly praised and similarly theatrical ‘Eleanor Rigby,’ ” he recalled. Michael Lynche’s Save: ‘American Idol’ Experts, Fans Weigh In

‘Bad decision with this many weeks left!’ one MTV reader writes. By Gil Kaufman Photo: Ray Mickshaw / FOX For once, “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest wasn’t exaggerating when he promised that Wednesday night’s results show would be a shocker . On a night when many predicted that Aaron Kelly’s “Idol” journey would be coming to a halt , instead it was burly personal trainer and new dad Michael Lynche facing the sing of shame. Lynche, who has emerged as one of the strongest contenders in an otherwise lackluster season nine, pulled out his big guns in an attempt to stay in the mix, reprising his lauded cover of Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work” and earning the season’s only save. He was on the chopping block despite a mostly praised R&B spin on “Eleanor Rigby” on Tuesday night. “I was absolutely shocked,” Rickey Yaneza, webmaster of the “Idol” fan site Rickey.org , said about Lynche landing in the bottom three alongside Kelly and Andrew Garcia. “I didn’t think he’d end up getting the least amount of votes, but I think they made the right call.” Yaneza said Lynche’s “Woman’s Work” was one of the best performances of the season so far, and the reprise was more than enough to earn his spot back. As for what happened to put Lynche in the crosshairs, Yaneza speculated that the brawny singer’s fans may have gotten complacent, while supporters of Kelly and Garcia pulled it together and rallied enough votes to keep them in the competition. “Aaron and Andrew’s fans worked their butts off overnight knowing their guys were in trouble,” he said, noting that Lynche’s fanbase has never been as strong as those for other on-the-bubble contestants such as Kelly, Garcia and “Teflon” Tim Urban. MTV’s own “Idol” disciple, Jim Cantiello, was surprised that the judges used their one-and-only save for Lynche, assuming they’d save it for one of the other front-runners. “Given the way this season is going, I assumed they’d only use it on Crystal Bowersox or perhaps Lee Dewyze,” he said. “Michael was a likable guy, but he’s been railed for giving overdramatic performances. Tuesday night, he went way over the top and Simon was quite vocal in his disapproval. So for 24 hours later to have passed and now the judges are unanimous in giving this guy another shot? It was unexpected.” Cantiello disagreed with the move, saying Lynche had reverted back to his “over-emotive” habits. “After his results-show interview where he told Seacrest that people should just download his studio recordings if they’re not feeling his onstage antics?” Cantiello said. “That right there proves he has no intention of pulling back. America wasn’t feeling his dinner-theater performance style, voted him off, and then the judges gave him a free pass to keep doing what he’s doing. If he doesn’t tone it down next week, he’ll be the lowest vote-getter all over again.” MTV readers reacted strongly to the drama, with Kevin writing, “Now what do they do if someone that is talented and could have a future in the business like Crystal doesn’t get enough votes one week? Bad decision with this many weeks left!” Rick took a more academic approach, arguing that the judges shouldn’t have saved Lynche because “when your vote total is that low, then your fanbase is highly unlikely to carry you through and you’re going home within the next few weeks anyway. I don’t think you break out the save until there is seven or even six left. In that case you could potentially save the winner.” MJ Santilli, who runs the “Idol” fan site MJsBigBlog.com , isn’t a fan of the save in general, feeling that the “Idol” chips should fall where they may with no interference from the judges. “Surprise boots are part of the ‘Idol’ experience. Everyone gets over it and moves on,” she said. “So I’m happy to have it out of the way for the season.” That said, if the save has to be deployed, she was fine with Lynche being the beneficiary. “There are at least four contestants who should be heading out the door before Mike Lynche: Aaron Kelly, Andrew Garcia, Katie Stevens and Tim Urban have all had spotty track records, at best, on the ‘Idol’ stage,” she said. “Plus, Mike is one of the few contestants left with decent performance skills, and now that Paige Miles is gone, he’s the only R&B singer in the group.” Santilli was also surprised at Lynche’s elimination because she figured his fanbase wasn’t being split with any of the other contestants. But the problem now, she said, was that if one of the other front-runners — such as Bowersox, Dewyze or Siobhan Magnus — is eliminated in the next few weeks, the judges can’t do a thing about it. “And there goes that feel-good save they could have used during ‘Idol Gives Back,’ ” she lamented. Judging the Judges’ Save on American Idol: Did Justice Prevail?

Hooray! Not so much? This week, American Idol ‘s voters grew a pair and almost eliminated a dude . But before that pig could fly, the judges whipped out a pocket veto and fired it square at the showstopping vest of Michael “Big Mike” Lynche, who sang a decent “Eleanor Rigby” this week and still scored the lowest number of votes. The new father Lynche, whose wife enjoyed a very famous cervix during Hollywood Week, lives to meet mentor Adam Lambert . Are we happy for Big Mike’s triumph?

‘American Idol’ Judges Save Michael Lynche

He was joined by Andrew Garcia and Aaron Kelly in this week’s bottom three. By James Montgomery Michael Lynche on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: Fox On Tuesday night’s “American Idol,” we had extended didgeridoo bellowing, a winsome bagpiper slowly descending a staircase and a dude bounding onstage to embrace Siobhan Magnus. How would Wednesday’s (April 7) results show top all that WTF-ness? With a controversial judges’ save, of course! Viewers decreed that it was big-hearted (and equally big-bodied) crooner Michael Lynche’s turn to go — a bit of a shock after the “Idol” judges praised his reworking of the Beatles’ “Eleanor Ribgy” — and as the studio audience howled their disapproval, Lynche strode to the center of the stage and belted out a version of Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work,” the same song that brought judge Kara DioGuardi to tears a few weeks earlier. As Lynche finished, the audience cheered wildly, his wife wept, and the judges conferred. Simon Cowell played the drama to the hilt, speaking in slow, pregnant pauses as the room fell deathly quiet. “The frustrating thing is, Michael, is that we all wish you did something like that yesterday, and this is why you’re in the position you’re in right now,” Cowell said. “We only have one save in the competition. This is unanimous, Michael, if it’s any comfort, and we have decided we’re going to see you next week.” With that, the audience squealed with delight (Lynche’s wife nearly leapt out of her dress), and the man dubbed “Big Mike” was mobbed by his fellow “Idol” contestants. Even the judges seemed to be excited, giving him a standing ovation as Lynche pounded his chest and blew kisses to his wife. Lynche’s save, of course, means that two “Idol” hopefuls will be getting the boot next week, and we suspect things will be a lot less jovial then. Wednesday’s bottom three was made up entirely of guys — Lynche, Andrew Garcia and Aaron Kelly — a fact “Idol” producers didn’t reveal until more than 30 minutes into the show and only after performances by Jason Der
