While Britney Spears was chewing gum during a photo op, Salma Hayek (barely) tucked her girls into an Alexander McQueen dress for an evening at the Old Vic. Meanwhile, Nick Jonas looked like an idiot at the American Music Awards (turtlenecks and suits should never, ever go together), while Jenny McCarthy wore a red … something or other that was not much better. Nicki Minaj Tells Idol Contestant She Wants To Have His Babies The catty American Idol judges feud between big booty bandit Nicki Mina j and Mariah “MiMi” the diva may be over for now, but that doesn’t mean Mrs. YMCMB isn’t finding other ways to stir the pot. She took her antics all the way to the max during last night’s show when she told one 18-year-old male contestant that she wanted to have his babies. via MTV News Among those meeting “Idol” grim reaper was Johnny Keyser, who was cut last season during Hollywood Week and whose dreams were cut short deep into the competition for the second year in a row. Also getting axed were Kevin Harris, Chris Watson, Jimmy Smith and the mysterious, unforgettable, glitter-covered JDA. During the episode, Nicki Minaj showed she’s not shy about doling out compliments, telling Kevin Harris, “every single solitary musical choice you made tonight was perfection,” praising Chris Watson as “the prettiest man I’ve seen in my life, ever,” celebrating Elijah Liu as “my new favorite boy” and even offering to have one contestant’s babies. Now Nicki know that lil’ boy wouldn’t know what to do with all that silicone ….
Wednesday night’s episode introduces viewers to the ‘crazy’ and quirky Kez Ban, one of 76 contestants to make the cut. By Adam Graham Contestants perform during Hollywood Week on “American Idol” Photo: Fox
Majority of the 185 contestants were sent home on Wednesday night’s episode, while the few survivors went on to Las Vegas. By Adam Graham Randy Jackson in “American Idol” Photo: Fox After last week’s singing-free edition of “American Idol,” it was all singing on Wednesday’s (February 15) episode, which ran through highlights of Hollywood Week’s Group Night and Solo Day. The two-hour episode began with 185 contestants divvied into 42 groups; an hour later, only 98 contestants remained. And by the end of the episode, the field had been narrowed by another quarter, and the remaining contestants were on a bus to Las Vegas. The cuts came fast and furious, and among those dismissed during Group Night included “tent girl” Amy Brumfield, who seemed to infect everyone with whom she came in contact with some sort of illness; Symone Black, whose dramatic fall off the stage earlier in Hollywood Week provided “Idol” with a built-in cliffhanger during last week’s episodes; police officer Alisha Bernhardt, who struggled to find a group to sing with during Group Night and eventually ended up in a group where everyone was dismissed; and 17-year-old Imani Handy, who collapsed three times on Group Night. (That has to be some sort of “Idol” record.) By Solo Day, nearly every remaining contestant seemed to have Georgia on their mind, as the Ray Charles classic was belted out time and again. Standout renditions came from Jen Hirsh, 25, of Agoura Hills, California; Reed Grimm, 26, of Ellsworth, Wisconsin, who sang the song while playing drums; and 27-year-old Adam Brock, a self-described “white chocolate” singer from Washington, Pennsylvania, who ably wrapped his big pipes around the timeless anthem. Some of the other top contestants featured during the solo round, where singers were backed by the “Idol” band, were Joshua Ledet, who earned a standing ovation from the judges for his powerful version of Christina Perri’s “Jar of Hearts,” and 28-year-old Creighton Fraker from Queens, who too earned a standing O for his intensely soulful version of “What a Wonderful World,” which stands near the top on the shortlist of best “Idol” performances so far this year. Other notables included Shannon Magrane, the 16-year-old whose version of “What a Wonderful World” caused Jennifer Lopez to blurt, “What the hell was that!” and Skylar Laine, the 17-year-old from Brandon, Mississippi, whose take on the Band Perry’s “You Lie” had J. Lo making comparisons to Reba McEntire. So far the season’s standout personality continues to be Heejun Han, the wry 22-year-old from Flushing, New York, whose running feud with Richie Law, the would-be Scotty McCreery from Centennial, Colorado, has provided some of the season’s best laughs. Will these two finally have it out with each other in Las Vegas? We’ll find out soon. What did you think of Wednesday’s “Idol”? Let us know in the comments! Some people come to Hollywood and become stars. Others get kicked to the curb. And yet some others faint and fall off stage. Before we get into the talent portion of American Idol’s Hollywood Week (Part I!), let’s cut right to the shocking moment everyone will be talking about today: 16-year-old Symone Black’s … More » Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : Idolator Discovery Date : 09/02/2012 03:42 Number of articles : 2
Shannon Magrane, Jordin Sparks and Nikko Smith also have bold-name dads. By Gil Kaufman, with additional reporting by Katie Byrne Jane Carrey on “American Idol” Photo: FOX For years, singers have done just about anything they could to get the attention the judges on “American Idol.” There have been wacky costumes, shameless flirtation with the panel and some truly horrible original songs . But one surefire way to pique the interest of Randy, Steven and J.Lo (not to mention Simon and Paula in the past) is to reveal in your bio that your dad is already a bold-faced name. The latest case-in-point is Jane Carrey, the 24-year-old daughter of actor Jim Carrey , who tried out for the show Sunday night. The judges enjoyed her rendition of Bonnie Raitt’s “Something to Talk About,” while former Fly Girl Jennifer Lopez remembered seeing baby Jane on the set of “In Living Color” when she shared the stage with Carrey. But she’s just the latest “Idol” wannabe to use her name to get in the door. Just last week, we met lanky Shannon Magrane , whose father was the starting pitcher in two games for the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1987 World Series. Magrane is among a long list of athlete offspring who’ve given “Idol” a shot. In season seven, we briefly got to know Alyonka Larionov, daughter of former National Hockey League star Igor “The Professor” Larionov, who helped pave the way for Russian hockey players to join NHL teams back in the late 1980s. There was also season-four crooner Nikko Smith, son of Hall of Fame baseball player Ozzie Smith. “Being around my dad and him being in the spotlight kind of prepares you and you have an outlook on things that’s a little bit different, because you’ve been around celebrities and people in the spotlight,” Nikko told MTV News in 2007. But perhaps the biggest jock descendant to make it to the “Idol” stage is Jordin Sparks, the season-six winner whose father is former NFL cornerback Phillippi Sparks. The year she won “Idol,” Jordin recalled to MTV News taking pictures with her family for national magazines and seeing fans swarm her dad for autographs. “He actually told me the other day that when he would sign autographs, I would just be watching so intently,” she remembered. “He said it was really weird, because he was watching me [sign autographs] the other day, and now it’s all turned around.” It also helps to have some music-industry blood pumping through your veins. In season eight, that meant some extra shine for David Osmond, who made it to Hollywood Week that year thanks to his famous singing family’s pedigree and some very smooth vocals but flamed out due to laryngitis. Season-six contestant Sundance Head, son of “Treat Her Right” singer Roy Head, ended up in 13th place on the show. Before he surprised the political world by winning late Democratic stalwart Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat in 2010, Republican lawmaker Scott Brown’s basketball-playing daughter Ayla made it into the top 16 on the show in season five. ‘It’s … dealing in my mind and everything that I been through, and dealing with the crew,’ Rae tells MTV News of new solo LP. By Paul Cantor Raekwon Photo: Roger Kisby/ Getty Images Raekwon the Chef knows a thing or two about Shaolin and Wu-Tang. The title of the MC’s fifth solo album, Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang, represents the New York City borough he hails from, Staten Island — whose street name in rap circles is Shaolin — and, of course, the MC has been a key member of the iconic Wu-Tang Clan since its founding in the early ’90s. Ultimately, though, Rae’s album, which dropped on Tuesday (March 8), is inspired (like many things Wu-Tang) by the classic 1981 Gordon Liu film of the same name, about a rivalry between two schools of ancient martial arts. “[The film is about] basically two schools fighting with one another,” Raekwon told MTV News recently about the movie’s plot. “But they all come from the same school, and it was an outsider who actually tried to get the Shaolin style and the Wu-Tang style and have them go at one another. On this album, it’s the same thing: It’s two schools and, you know, I’m part of that school. I’m Shaolin but at the same time, I’m Wu-Tang. So really, it’s ego versus discipline, dealing in my mind and everything that I been through, and dealing with the crew.” It’s no coincidence that the concept behind Raekwon’s album focuses on two forces in opposition. Rae began working on Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang back in late 2007, after expressing disappointment with the creative direction Wu-Tang’s nominal leader, the RZA, had taken with the group’s ’07 LP, 8 Diagrams. (Fellow Wu member Ghostface Killah went so far as to call the album
