‘American Idol’ Wraps Up Hollywood Week

Majority of the 185 contestants were sent home on Wednesday night’s episode, while the few survivors went on to Las Vegas. By Adam Graham Randy Jackson in “American Idol” Photo: Fox After last week’s singing-free edition of “American Idol,” it was all singing on Wednesday’s (February 15) episode, which ran through highlights of Hollywood Week’s Group Night and Solo Day. The two-hour episode began with 185 contestants divvied into 42 groups; an hour later, only 98 contestants remained. And by the end of the episode, the field had been narrowed by another quarter, and the remaining contestants were on a bus to Las Vegas. The cuts came fast and furious, and among those dismissed during Group Night included “tent girl” Amy Brumfield, who seemed to infect everyone with whom she came in contact with some sort of illness; Symone Black, whose dramatic fall off the stage earlier in Hollywood Week provided “Idol” with a built-in cliffhanger during last week’s episodes; police officer Alisha Bernhardt, who struggled to find a group to sing with during Group Night and eventually ended up in a group where everyone was dismissed; and 17-year-old Imani Handy, who collapsed three times on Group Night. (That has to be some sort of “Idol” record.) By Solo Day, nearly every remaining contestant seemed to have Georgia on their mind, as the Ray Charles classic was belted out time and again. Standout renditions came from Jen Hirsh, 25, of Agoura Hills, California; Reed Grimm, 26, of Ellsworth, Wisconsin, who sang the song while playing drums; and 27-year-old Adam Brock, a self-described “white chocolate” singer from Washington, Pennsylvania, who ably wrapped his big pipes around the timeless anthem. Some of the other top contestants featured during the solo round, where singers were backed by the “Idol” band, were Joshua Ledet, who earned a standing ovation from the judges for his powerful version of Christina Perri’s “Jar of Hearts,” and 28-year-old Creighton Fraker from Queens, who too earned a standing O for his intensely soulful version of “What a Wonderful World,” which stands near the top on the shortlist of best “Idol” performances so far this year. Other notables included Shannon Magrane, the 16-year-old whose version of “What a Wonderful World” caused Jennifer Lopez to blurt, “What the hell was that!” and Skylar Laine, the 17-year-old from Brandon, Mississippi, whose take on the Band Perry’s “You Lie” had J. Lo making comparisons to Reba McEntire. So far the season’s standout personality continues to be Heejun Han, the wry 22-year-old from Flushing, New York, whose running feud with Richie Law, the would-be Scotty McCreery from Centennial, Colorado, has provided some of the season’s best laughs. Will these two finally have it out with each other in Las Vegas? We’ll find out soon. What did you think of Wednesday’s “Idol”? Let us know in the comments! Nas In ‘Rare Form’ On New Album, Salaam Remi Says

‘All his verses on the album, it sounds like you’re getting smacked upside the head,’ producer tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Nas Photo: MTV News Behind the Beats: Salaam Remi Salaam Remi and Nas didn’t start out as buddies, but some things are just meant to be. By the time Nas was putting out his classic rap LP Illmatic, Salaam was separately making his mark, already having produced for seminal hip-hop star Kurtis Blow at the age of 14. Though they hailed from the same Queens, New York, neighborhood and ran in similar circles, Nas and Salaam didn’t hook up until 2001, when Nas requested a beat from Remi for his Stillmatic LP. Now, 10 years later, he and Nas are still at it, working on God’s Son’s upcoming 10th solo studio album. “Life is different, and at this point, life is good and dudes is looking younger now than they did when they were 25,” Remi told Mixtape Daily. “So he’s just in that rare form.” It’s surprising that they didn’t hook up sooner, but after going through a small spat with one of Nas’ mentors, Large Professor, Remi never got the chance to really get to know Nas earlier. But a 2001 chance meeting in L.A. led to one of hip-hop’s most organic partnerships. “I created the track for ‘What Goes Around (Poison),’ and I sent it to him,” Remi recalled. “And when I sent it to him, at the end of the day, we’re in the same neighborhood.” Remi’s discography is long and diverse. In 1991, he worked alongside Marley Marl on Craig G’s Now, That’s More Like It album, and three years later, he produced Ini Kamoze’s reggae hit “Here Comes the Hotstepper.” Salaam, however, is most known for producing the Fugees’ 1996 smash single “Fu-Gee-La” from their Grammy-winning The Score LP. Then, of course, there is his work with Amy Winehouse on her 2006 breakout, Back to Black. Since hooking up, Salaam has been responsible for a number of Nas bangers: 2003’s “Made You Look” was noted for its authentic New York feel, while the uplifting “I Can” sampled its drums from the Honeydrippers’ “Impeach the President,” one of the most recognizable samples in hip-hop. In 2004, Remi crafted “Thief’s Theme” and Nas’ collaboration with his dad, “Bridging the Gap” More recently, the two have come up with the gritty “Nasty,” the first single from the Queens rap legend’s upcoming album. On the boom-bap-inspired track, Nas chooses to bypass any notions of going pop, instead setting his sets on hip-hop’s underground. It’s a welcomed departure from the hip-hop that occupies top 40 radio these days, but Salaam promised that the sound on Esco’s next album will be diverse. “Musically, I have an array of records,” he said. “You got some ‘Nasty’-type stuff, you have stuff that’s in the middle, up, down. I have all types of stuff. Just at the end of the day, we have to see what feels right for that package of 10 to 12 songs, because it’s way more songs.” The expectations for this new Nas album are high, and Remi assured fans that his friend will deliver. “He sounds like he’s on his A-game writing,” he said. “All his features at this point, all his verses on the album, it sounds like you’re getting smacked upside the head. As much as ‘Nasty’ has that type of beat, it’s really him on the beat that’s making it connect all the way.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . ‘Breaking Dawn – Part 1’: Everything You Need To Know

We’ve been following the penultimate ‘Twilight’ entry for years … and now it’s finally here! By Eric Ditzian Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit Entertainment Well over three years after “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer exclusively told MTV News that “Breaking Dawn” should be split into two films, the first part of the vampire epic rolled into theaters Friday (November 18). In the time since that interview, we’ve covered the two films exhaustively. The sheer amount of content is staggering — hours and hours of interviews, exclusive reveals of footage and photos, analysis of casting news and conversations with fans. And right here on this page you can find it all. Right here, you can find out everything there is to know about “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1”: The Split The official announcement that “Breaking Dawn” would be split into two movies came in June 2010, shortly before “Eclipse” opened to a $64 million weekend. By then, “Dreamgirls” director Bill Condon had already bested Gus Van Sant and Sofia Coppola for the right to helm the films. “I definitely think it was the right thing to do, for the movie and for the book,” Taylor Lautner told MTV News of the split. “It’s hard enough to condense 500 pages into a script, but to condense 800 and everything that’s going on in ‘Breaking Dawn,’ it would have been impossible.” Soon, casting for the new vamps had begun, with folks like Maggie Grace, Lee Pace and Noel Fisher signing on to play bloodsuckers. Young Mackenzie Foy was picked to be Bella and Edward’s daughter. Filming kicked off in Rio de Janeiro in November 2010. The First Looks The first peek at the movie arrived shortly thereafter — a simple shot of Kristen Stewart clutching feathers in her hand during her honeymoon. Months would go by until we actually got a look at Stewart and Pattinson in the flesh. To start the new year, Summit released a photo of the two lovebirds in bed . “It’s always awkward in a way if you’re doing it with anybody,” RPattz told us of the sex scene. “It really depends on how it’s staged and stuff. It’s like doing Twister.” During an “MTV First” with Pattinson tied to “Water for Elephants,” the Brit ended up spilling tons of dirt on “Breaking Dawn” — sex scenes, musical performances and his thoughts on his movie daughter. Lautner sat down for his own “MTV First” shortly thereafter, an effort to promote “Abduction,” but obviously the talk turned early and often to “Twilight.” In June came the MTV Movie Awards, and, as usual, we delivered a “Twilight” first look: this time, an exclusive trailer for “Breaking Dawn – Part 1,” complete with evidence of Bella Swan’s wedded bliss and baby bump. Fans were blown away , and so was Stewart, as she told us later at San Diego Comic-Con. “I think the most surreal experience was getting married,” she said. “It was right at the bitter end. I was amping up to it the entire time. They left me on my toes for six months. And then it was just sort of very cathartic to see the entire cast in the pews and everyone excited to see how it was all going to go down.” The Arrival More footage , more posters and more photos continued to arrive. The soundtrack lineup hit the Web in September — including names like Bruno Mars, Christina Perri and Theophilus London — and the cavalcade of premieres began in October. Before their U.S. press duties truly kicked off, we sat down with Pattinson, Stewart and Lautner for yet another “MTV First.” There was talk of sex, abs and G-strings, as well as the debut of an exclusive clip . We also sat down for extended one-on-one interviews with the three actors: Pattinson discussed fulfilling sexual fantasies, Stewart confessed that the sex scene was “all close-ups,” and Lautner revealed that he fought against taking his shirt off in the movie. With just days to go until opening, we hit the “Breaking Dawn” black carpet in Los Angeles. Though all the Twi-craziness has been part of his life for years, Pattinson admitted he still can’t comprehend it all. “It’s like an alternate reality,” he told us. “My everyday life is so boring, and then you go to these things and everyone thinks something cool is happening.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Bruno Mars Pens A Love Song In ‘Breaking Dawn’ Video

Mars taps his songwriting skills to win his girl back in brand-new clip for ‘It Will Rain.’ By Jocelyn Vena Bruno Mars in his “It Will Rain” music video Photo: Atlantic Records After a slight delay , the video for Bruno Mars ‘ “It Will Rain” is finally here, and the clip opens with a pivotal scene from “Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” After the opening sequence with Bella and Edward getting married in front of their friends and family, the video cuts to a love story between Mars, who recorded the track especially for the Bill Condon-directed flick, and his lovely leading lady. Bruno and his onscreen love experience the many joys, trials and tribulations of being in a relationship. And as is often the case in real life, things starts out cute; every little moment and snuggle is more romantic than the one before. Bruno goes out of his way to court his female friend, even holding a private screening of “Breaking Dawn” to woo her. They share kisses as footage of Bella and Edward’s honeymoon flashes on the wall. But at some point, the pair begin to fight, though Bruno isn’t going to let her go that easily: He uses his songwriting skills to persuade her to stay with him. The heartbreak expressed on the track is mirrored in solo shots of Bruno standing around looking sullen. As the video closes out, we see that the song Bruno wrote while his lady was asleep turned out to be romantic enough to win her back. In the final shot, Bruno stands alone while rain hits the window behind him and sings, “Cause there’ll be no sunlight if I lose you, baby/ There’ll be no clear skies if I lose you, baby/ Just like the clouds, my eyes will do the same if you walk away/ Every day, it will rain, rain, rain.” The soundtrack for “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” was released this week and features tracks from Mars, Christina Perri (“A Thousand Years”) and Theophilus London (“Neighbors”) , to name a few The highly anticipated fourth film in the “Twilight Saga” series opens November 18. ‘X Factor’: Rachel Crow Compared To Michael Jackson

It was a night full of high praise, with Astro, Josh Krajcik and Melanie Amaro all earning the judges’ approval as well. By Adam Graham Simon Cowell Photo: FOX There was no shortage of praise doled out by the judges on Wednesday’s (November 2) episode of “The X Factor,” with two performers hailed as budding superstars, one compared to a young Michael Jackson and a group praised as one of the world’s best bands. And those acts weren’t even considered the evening’s front-runners! Here’s a recap of Wednesday’s performances, and the compliments that followed: The Girls Following her rendition of the Eagles’ “Desperado,” Melanie Amaro was dubbed “the one to beat” in the competition by Cowell. Meanwhile, Rachel Crow’s take on “Walking on Sunshine” caused Scherzinger to compare the 13-year-old to Jackson 5-era Michael Jackson, and Drew — formerly known as Drew Ryniewicz — wowed the judges with her unorthodox take on Nelly’s “Just a Dream,” which prompted both L.A. Reid and Cowell to say the 14-year-old has the makings of a superstar. The Boys Chris Rene was surrounded by flames during his performance of the Carpenters’ “Superstar,” which Cowell said made it look like he was performing in hell. “That’s called fire, baby, ’cause he’s hot!” gushed mentor L.A. Reid. Elsewhere, pintsize rapper Astro’s blend of “Hip-Hop Hooray” and “Get Ur Freak On” — with original verses by the young MC — had Cowell praising his star quality and Scherzinger saying she wanted to take him to the club, while Marcus Canty’s mash-up of B.o.B’s “Nothin’ on You” and Bobby Brown’s “Every Little Step” had Paula Abdul calling him “a total performer.” The Groups The 10-member InTENsity took pieces of Kim Wilde’s “Kids in America” and LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” and blended them into one “fun, fun, fun” performance, according to Reid, who echoed the other judges’ sentiments about the group. Lakoda Rayne’s vocals — especially their harmonies — were celebrated following their performance of “Landslide,” though Cowell attacked their choice of wardrobe, saying their gowns made them look like they were attending the prom. And the Stereo Hogzz kicked off the evening with a steroid-enhanced version of Janet Jackson’s “Rhythm Nation” that had Abdul calling them “fantastic” and had Cowell complimenting them by saying, “I don’t think there’s a band in the world right now who are as good as you.” Over 30s Burrito maker Josh Krajcik took on Christina Perri’s “Jar of Hearts,” and Cowell said the stark ballad came off as a song that Krajcik wrote himself. Mentor Scherzinger put it another way: “I feel like a proud mom, but we’re, like, the same age, so that doesn’t work.” Stacy Francis, after attempting a pop song last week, took ’em to church with “Up to the Mountain,” which was called “magical” and “a shining moment” by Abdul and called one of the evening’s best by Cowell, who let her kiss him onstage. And 60-year-old LeRoy Bell got decent marks for singing Lonestar’s “I’m Already There,” though Reid criticized the song choice and Cowell said he felt Bell had a confidence problem. On this night, that was about as harsh as the criticism would get. One finalist will be sent home on Thursday’s one-hour live episode of “The X Factor.” It was also announced on Wednesday’s show that “The X Factor” will return next year for a second season. What did you think of the top 12 on “X Factor”? Let us know in the comments!

‘Dancing With The Stars’: David Arquette Gets Cut

Justin Bieber performs his Christmas collabo with Boyz II Men on results show. By Kara Warner Kym Johnson and David Arquette Photo: ABC The field of competing couples on the 13th season of “Dancing With The Stars” was trimmed down to five Tuesday night after David Arquette and partner Kym Johnson were eliminated from the show. Nancy Grace and Tristan MacManus, who were the other couple in the bottom two, got to keep their dancing shoes for another go next week. “This has to be a mistake!” Arquette joked when his name was called. “This is my show! I love all the people I got to know and dance with. This whole production is top-notch, and thank you to all the fans!” “I’m going to take a lot away from this experience,” Arquette said in his goodbye video. ” ‘DWTS’ was an experience of a lifetime. You learn things about yourself you never thought possible.” The latest elimination show was as packed with headlining performers as ever. Teen king Justin Bieber kicked off the show with a lively performance of his hit “Never Say Never” and later returned to the dance floor with Boyz II Men to perform their Christmas collaboration “Fa La La” from his just-released holiday album, Under the Mistletoe. Bieber and the Boyz weren’t the only artists to take the “DWTS” stage Tuesday night: Rising star Christina Perri sang “Arms,” while 17-year-old ballerina and cancer survivor Victoria-Rose Viren performed a moving duet in front of Perri. Other fun performances included the encore dance of the night, the honors for which went to Team Paso Doble (Ricki Lake, Rob Kardashian and Hope Solo), who reprised their “powerful” dance to Evanescence’s “Wake Me Up Inside.” Seasoned pro Derek Hough also performed a fun routine with fellow pro Allison Holker. Heading into the eighth week of competition, Lake and Hough are sitting pretty at the top of the leaderboard, followed closely by fan favorite J.R. Martinez and his partner Karina Smirnoff, “dark horse” Rob Kardashian and partner Cheryl Burke, and Hope Solo and Maksim Chmerkovskiy. Were you surprised to see David go? Christina Perri Calls ‘Breaking Dawn’ Video ‘Dream-Like’

Singer says ‘A Thousand Years,’ her contribution to the ‘Twilight’ soundtrack, is ‘about the simplest kind of love and a timeless love.’ By Jocelyn Vena Christina Perri in her “A Thousand Years” music video Photo: Atlantic Christina Perri ‘s video for her “Twilight” soundtrack tune, “A Thousand Years,” hit the streets this week — in anticipation of all things “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” going down in November — and Twilighters won’t be disappointed. The video for the romantic tune is a mix of footage from the film, including the wedding scene and all that honeymoon hotness, as well as footage of Perri decked out in a gown, singing the passionate lyrics of the song while surrounded by candles. MTV News was on the “A Thousand Years” video set, where the singer opened up about her fandom for “The Twilight Saga.” “I wrote [the song] for Edward and Bella in their perspective,” Perri explained, calling the song “pretty, classical and simple.” “It’s the purest love song I think I could have possibly written. It’s about the simplest kind of love and a timeless love. “I’ve been a really big ‘Twilight’ fan for years. For me, it just has to do most with the love story between Edward and Bella. I feel like it’s ‘Romeo and Juliet,’ and they just happen to be vampires and there’s werewolves. I loved the story from day one.” Perri said that being such a “Twilight” fan makes having her song on the soundtrack that much more meaningful. “The fact that my dream came true … still blows my mind, and I don’t think I’ve fully processed it yet, even though we’re on the set of the music video,” she said. “I feel like maybe when we’re at the premiere and I see it in the movie is when it’ll really hit me because it just seems so dream-like. I feel so honored. It feels really epic.” The album hits stores November 8, just 10 days before the Bill Condon-directed “Breaking Dawn” opens November 18. A video for Bruno Mars’ track, “It Will Rain,” is slated to drop “in a couple weeks,” Mars tweeted Monday. The last part of the “Twilight Saga,” “Breaking Dawn – Part 2,” opens November 2012.
