“Hallelujah” was an incredible moment. We had goosebumps and teared up a little. Audience members were standing and swaying, like people do at more rambunctious church services. The audience members leapt to their feet afterwards in thunderous applause. We have never seen anything like it this season and can only imagine what the “moments” from other seasons must have been like. Lee Dewyze unequivocally won the Top 3 night on “American Idol” with his performances of “Hallelujah” and “Simple Ma

The judges used their ‘save’ on Big Mike five weeks ago, carrying him all the way to the final four. By James Montgomery Michael Lynche on “American Idol” Wednesday This week on “American Idol,” the final four tackled the songs of the silver screen , and somewhat fittingly, Wednesday night’s (May 12) elimination show was a dramatic ride, one that kept the audience guessing until the last moment. Most assumed front-runners Lee Dewyze and Crystal Bowersox would make it through to the top three, especially following their much-praised duet on “Falling Slowly” (from the Oscar-winning “Once”). Knowing this, “Idol” producers left both hopefuls in the lurch, instead revealing that Casey James — who, once again, seemed to be the favorite to be sent packing after he plucked his way through a version of “Mrs. Robinson” — would be moving on to next week’s show. That left Bowersox, Dewyze and Michael Lynche staring down the specter of elimination, though host Ryan Seacrest quickly announced that Dewyze would be joining James in the top three. (Of course, he did so by announcing: “Friends, Lee is headed back to Chicago” — a reference to the show’s annual visits to the top three’s hometowns — which most in the crowd seemed to interpret as meaning Dewyze had been booted from the show, at least judging by the gasps in the room.) That meant that either Bowersox or Lynche would be sent packing — and after even more drama (in the form of a Bon Jovi performance and a pair of commercial breaks), we finally found out for whom the bell tolled. It was Lynche, who couldn’t overcome his rather lackluster performance of Michael Jackson’s “Will You be There” (from “Free Willy”). When his name was called, Lynche — in keeping with his big-hearted demeanor — wasn’t bitter. In fact, he thanked the judges for saving him five weeks ago and said that he’ll leave “Idol” with only fond memories. “It’s been unbelievable, man. I just sit here right now, and I think, ‘I wasn’t even supposed to be here,’ ” Lynche told Seacrest. “Thank God for the judges saving me. I got to spend more time here, be with the people … it’s all good, man.” And with that, he performed the “Free Willy” song once again. It wasn’t exactly a Hollywood ending, but we’ll take it. Now, on to the top three. Were you sad to see Big Mike go? Let us know in the comments. Michael Lynche Sent Packing On ‘American Idol’

‘After that performance, you, Crystal, are back in the game,’ critiqued judge Simon Cowell. By Eric Ditzian Crystal Bowersox on “American Idol” Tuesday Photo: FOX Would it be a blockbuster or a bomb? That was the key question heading into Songs of the Cinema Night on Tuesday’s (May 11) “American Idol,” a theme whose approved song list heavily favored a perplexing mix of tunes from golden oldies, ’80s action flicks and Disney cartoons. And while this Hollywood-centric episode might not be the stuff of awards-season glory, the “Idol” crew handled themselves well in front of the camera. Crystal Bowersox shined like a seasoned A-lister and made Lee Dewyze look like a breakout star during their duet. Meanwhile, Casey James and Michael Lynche proved they just might not be bankable solo stars at this point in the competition. Dewyze got the night started with “Kiss From a Rose,” a nod back to season eight contestant Danny Gokey, thanks to mentor Jamie Foxx. During the pre-performance video, the Oscar-winning actor got up in Dewyze’s face as he did with Gokey last year, giving the singer what Foxx called the Michael Mann treatment (a reference to the famously intense director of “Miami Vice” and “Collateral”). “Yeah, it’s different,” said a visibly uncomfortable Dewyze of his mentor’s approach. Dewyze brought that unease to the stage during his straightforward take on Seal’s hit from “Batman Forever.” His higher register was simply not up to the song’s requirements. Ellen DeGeneres alone was impressed with the rendition. Randy Jackson wanted to see more of a rocker attitude and more of an effort to switch up the song’s arrangement, while Simon Cowell laid down one his most dreaded analogies: “That was verging on — I’m afraid to say — karaoke,” the Brit judge said. And so the night proceeded on from karaoke to what DeGeneres mockingly dubbed “one of the classic, great movies of all time.” Yes, Michael Lynche selected a tune from “Free Willy,” one sung by Michael Jackson but nonetheless made famous in a movie about a boy’s enduring friendship with an Orca whale. Foxx was not impressed during rehearsals, nor were the judges when they heard his live version. Backed by a choir and with a lovely gospel vibe to the song, Big Mike sounded perfectly lovely. But Kara DioGuardi nailed it when she said, “You played it safe. What you did tonight, you can do in your sleep.” Just as Kara wished Lynche had done something in the vein of past R&B performances like “This Woman’s Work,” Jackson wondered why Big Mike abandoned what is so clearly his strongest genre. “You’re an R&B dude,” said the disappointed judge. “I wish you’d chosen something R&B.” Next came the first duet of the season, as Dewyze and Crystal Bowersox teamed up onstage. Facing each other with guitars sandwiched between them, they traded and shared lyrics from “Falling Slowly,” a beautiful number from “Once.” It marked a welcome return to form for Dewyze and a stunning debut for MamaSox. His growly tone contrasted nicely with her innate bluesiness. The judges then took turns trading superlatives to describe the performance. “One of my favorite moments from the entire season,” said DioGuardi, seconds before Cowell declared, “I don’t know if I’d call that a good song. I’d call that a fantastic song.” It was a tough act to follow, but as they say in showbiz, the show must go on! And on came Casey James with a ukulele and a bluegrass-tinged take on “Mrs. Robinson,” the Simon & Garfunkel classic from “The Graduate.” Foxx seemed to be channeling DioGuardi when he asked the singer to seduce him during rehearsals. The seduction didn’t necessarily pay off. “For me, this is you fighting to stay in the competition,” DioGuardi said as she pointed out how Casey’s more comfortable standing back and rocking out. “For me this was actually a good choice.” That was less of a compliment than it might sound in print. Cowell was more direct when he said, “I didn’t think the song or the performance had the substance required on this important night for you. … I thought it was a little bit lazy and I think you could have made more of an impact.” After the break, Bowersox headed back onstage for a country-rock version of Kenny Loggins’ “I’m Alright” from the comedy “Caddyshack.” Like the movie, her rehearsal was marked by some foul language. But by the time of her live performance, MamaSox had found her form. The judges feted the 24-year-old for switching the song up far more than any of the other contestants dared during their performances. Both DioGuardi and DeGeneres announced that she “made it better.” Cowell, who had criticized Bowersox in recent weeks, welcomed her back by saying, “After that performance, you, Crystal, are back in the game.” To finish up the night, Big Mike and James sauntered back onstage for another guitar duet. Though it lacked the energy on display during Bowersox and Dewyze’s performance, their take on Bryan Adams’ “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman” was still far better than either man’s individual effort. “The duets tonight were incredible,” said DioGuardi, summing up the judges consensus. “They were better than all of the solo performances.”

‘I tried out for the show twice and didn’t make it past the first round,’ frontwoman Hillary Scott recalls. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Gil Kaufman Photo: MTV News It’s Shania Twain Week on “American Idol,” and Nashville’s latest crossover sensations, Lady Antebellum , are bringing their hit “Need You Now” to the “Idol” stage on Wednesday night (April 27). Frontwoman Hillary Scott said being featured on the #1 show in the country, in a performance that was recorded earlier this month, had a special meaning for her. “I tried out for the show twice and didn’t make it past the first round,” she told MTV News. “So that is what you call validation.” All jokes aside, Scott said being up on that stage felt pretty good. “It was amazing [after] watching it on television so many times, and then you get there, and the room is not as big as you think it’s going to be, but it’s just beautiful. We had a live audience, and it was fun. We were just honored to be there.” Scott recently ‘fessed up to loving Justin Bieber , but that doesn’t mean they’re prepared for his level of pop-music success. “You just never know when you write a song and you go into the studio and record it what it’s gonna do. And honestly, [‘Need You Now’] took on a new life when we went into the studio,” she said. “Whenever we heard that this song was getting picked up and played on pop radio, we were completely shocked but excited, because that just means more people are hearing it. We want to headline tours very soon, so the more people that hear it, the better. It’s bringing light to the country-music genre, which we are so proud of.” Are you excited to see Lady Antebellum on “Idol”? Tell us in the comments! Crystal Bowersox might be the front-runner, but so was Adam Lambert, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Lee Dewyze Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Fox I hate to break it to you, fellow members of Bowersox Nation, but our girl isn’t going to win “American Idol.” It pains me to write that, as I love Crystal and all that she stands for (shoot, I feel like I know her ), and I really want her to win, but it’s just not in the cards. Not with Lee Dewyze still shrugging in the background, anyway. See, no matter how much Simon Cowell wants to shout it, “American Idol” is not “a singing competition”; it’s a popularity contest. If the show were based on vocal ability, producers would have just ended the competition last week, after Bowersox leveled the room with her tearful take on “People Get Ready,” or last month, when she lapped the field with “Me And Bobby McGee,” or, well, you catch my drift. At this point, the questions about her “marketability” or “relevancy” are moot: Her voice is timeless. She has proven that she can sing anything, anytime, anywhere, and she can do it better than anyone else on the show. So of course, she will still end up losing. Because “Idol” isn’t based on talent (I mean, it is up to a certain point — usually about the time we reach the top 10, then things tend to get all high-schooly). It’s based on intangible stuff like “familiarity” and “likability.” And those are the two categories in which Bowersox doesn’t dominate. For better or worse, viewers tend to vote for the contestant they feel they have the most in common with, the one they feel is a nice person, the one they already feel like they hear four times an hour on the radio. And more often than not, that contestant happens to be a slightly scruffy, well-proportioned, slightly hunky, kinda underdoggy, totally inoffensive guy. And this year, that guy is Lee Dewyze. Let me stop here for a second and say that I don’t dislike Dewyze in any way. I actually don’t have any kind of opinion of him (and I don’t think I’m in the minority by saying that), which doesn’t exactly bode well for his post-“Idol” career. After thinking about it for a full five minutes, here’s about all I can come up with to say about him: He seems like a pretty nice guy. He has good teeth. He is probably nice to animals and children and the elderly. Sometimes he wears a goofy knit cap. He plays the kind of bland, radio-ready sorta-rock that continues to mystify me. Of course, none of this makes him interesting — and, frankly, when he speaks, I tend to lose consciousness — but it makes him a shoo-in to win season nine of “American Idol.” “Idol” voters don’t want “interesting”; they want “nice,” “dependable,” “relatable.” This doesn’t change — or, at least, it hasn’t for the past three seasons. Just look at last year, when everyone was rushing to crown Adam Lambert the champion. I argued that Kris Allen would win “Idol” because “he seems like a solid, trustworthy guy — like a combination cowboy/firefighter, or a youth minister (which I think he actually is). If you think about it for a few seconds, you’ll probably realize that you know someone exactly like him — and you are not alone. Everyone in America knows someone like Kris Allen. Or, at least, more people know someone like him than they do Adam Lambert.” As it turns out, I was right. So with something like four weeks left in the competition, I’m calling it for Lee Dewyze. He reminds me too much of Allen in every possible way, right down to the fact that most of the media that covers “Idol” seems hell-bent on making him the “underdog,” despite all evidence to the contrary. Plus, to be honest, it’s not like Crystal has really salted this one away, either, what with the whole “I-quit, no-wait-I-don’t” drama surrounding her last week. There are too many holes in her story. She is considered too weird by the people who actually vote on this thing, and eventually — probably in the finale — her luck will run out. I am not alone in thinking this, either. Just Tuesday, I spoke to a pair of “Idol” experts for a piece I was working on called “Can Crystal Bowersox Lose ‘American Idol’?” Sadly, they both agreed that, yes, she could, and it would probably be to Dewyze. Of course, I’m willing to be proven wrong — I just don’t think I will be. America will go for Lee Dewyze, because they’ve gone for him in season seven (David Cook) and eight (Allen). They will go for him because he’s the safe, familiar choice, and because he seems nice. But most of all, they will go for him because he’s not Crystal Bowersox. That’s a shame, but it’s not exactly shocking. America likes things safe, and this is ” American Idol,” after all. Questions? Concerns? Hit me up at BTTS@MTVStaff.com .

Michael ‘Big Mike’ Lynche shined, while Aaron Kelly gets an ‘unsatisfactory’ grade on this week’s ‘Idol’ report card. By Eric Ditzian Aaron Kelly performs on “American Idol” on Wednesday Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Yesterday we gave “American Idol” producers props for reducing the show to one hour instead of two . Today we feel like tossing the judges in detention for their shenanigans this week, from Tuesday’s awkwardly forced lap-sitting incident between Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres to Wednesday’s infantile Simon/Kara DioGuardi flirtation. But this is a singing competition, isn’t it? So on to the contestants. The evening took off with strong performances from Lee Dewyze and Alex Lambert and U-turned into Snoozeville at a certain point, before blissfully blasting away with an injection of Michael Lynche-provided power. Who surprised us, who disappointed us and who’s in danger of going home? Let’s take a look at the top eight men’s report card. (And don’t miss Jim Cantiello’s recap of their performances in the MTV Newsroom .) Excellent Michael Lynche : First things first. While Big Mike’s take on Maxwell’s version of Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work” was the highlight of the evening, it was nowhere near the waterworks-generating territory that Kara’s tears suggested. That being said, Lynche keeps surprising us. Last week he ditched the guitar and brought an ear-pleasing soul sound to the stage. This week he busted out a falsetto during a butter-smooth channeling of Maxwell that showed off an impressive vocal range and convinced us that Big Mike is in the upper tier of “Idol” contestants. Good Lee Dewyze : Owl City’s “Fireflies” was by far the smartest song choice Dewyze has made during these lives shows. The emo rock vibe seems to be a comfortable niche for him, and we were almost able to dismiss his rampant pitch problems. Almost. Dewyze is like a poor man’s David Cook. And when you consider that we’ve never had a very high opinion of the seventh-season “Idol” winner, you can imagine what we think of Dewyze’s long-term prospects. No matter, he did well for himself on Wednesday and is a lock to make the top 12. Alex Lambert : The kid keeps impressing. The judges seemed to think he’d reverted back to a jelly-legged newbie. Not us. His tone on Ray LaMontagne’s “Trouble” was compelling, his vocals generally soft yet powerful. We don’t buy for a second that the only thing standing in the way of his winning “Idol,” as Kara suggested, is his lack of confidence — ever heard of Crystal Bowersox? — but we’re digging Lambert’s growth from week to week. “Trouble been dogging my soul,” he sang, and ya know what? We believed him. Casey James : Has any contestant this year been so lovingly framed and lit on the “Idol” stage? The crooning cowboy’s rendition of Keith Urban’s “You’ll Think of Me” was a step up from last week’s sub-par Southern rock number and nowhere near as magical his take on Bryan Adams’ “Heaven.” James keeps delivering confident, calm, passionate performances and he’ll keep doing it for a long while. Todrick Hall : Todrick narrowly nabs a Good grade because of his sheer enthusiasm. It’s the most clich
