‘Star Trek Into Darkness’: Benedict Cumberbatch’s Identity Revealed?

The release of the first issue of a three-part prequel comic to Star Trek Into Darkness   has lent some credence to the theory that the true villain of JJ Abram’s upcoming movie is not Khan or Gary Mitchell , but rather Robert April, the very first captain of the Starship Enterprise.   HitFix’s Drew McWeeny first raised the idea late last year after Abrams’ Bad Robot held a press day for the feature, which hits theaters in May, and now Brandon Connelly at Bleeding Cool has posted panels from the prequel comic which feature April. Star Trek Into Darkness screenwriter/producer Roberto Orci has said that the film’s will be a canon character, and April is. He was introduced in the animated Star Trek series that ran for 22 episodes in 1973 and ’74.  As McWeeny notes below, although Bad Robot has not confirmed that April figures in Star Trek Into Darkness ,  the plot of the animated episode that featured April appears to dovetail with aspects of the movie that have been revealed so far:  He first appeared in the animated series, and in the episode where he appeared, it was established that he was was the first Captain of the Enterprise, even before Pike.  He was much older in the episode, “The Counter-Clock Incident,” which you can watch right now if you have NetFlix Instant.  In that episode, everyone on the Enterprise starts to age backwards, and by the time they’re all kids, unable to fix the problem, only April and his wife are still old enough to figure out how to reverse the process.  April figuring out that mechanism for how to control aging and even reverse it could be an important part of the plot for “Star Trek Into Darkness.”  If you saw the first nine minutes of the film in front of ” The Hobbit ,” then you already know that the film opens with a London couple driving to the hospital where their daughter lies immobilized, and from the few shots we see of her, she appears to be aging too rapidly.  At the end of that scene, her father (Noel Clarke) steps outside for some air, and that’s when Cumberbatch shows up and tells him, “I can cure her.” As McWeeny points out in his post, Peter Weller , who’s also in STID could very well turn out to be April instead of Cumberbatch, who Abrams has chosen to identify simply as John Harrison . Whoever he turns out to be when the movie finally premieres, one thing is clear:  this whole who-is-Benedict-Cumberbatch? mystery is brilliant guerrilla marketing on Bad Robot’s part. Quentin Tarantino Wants You To Feel The Inhumanity Of Slavery In ‘Django Unchained’

Quentin Tarantino wants you to know that if his depiction of slavery in Django Unchained disturbs you, the reality was much grislier.  “I’m here to tell you, that however bad things get in the movie, a lot worse shit happened,” the filmmaker told a British Academy of Film and Television Arts crowd after screening his hotly anticipated spaghetti western in London. Judging from a report in London’s Guardian newspaper,  Tarantino intends  Django Unchained  to be a visceral, in-your-face depiction of slavery in America.  “We all intellectually ‘know’ the brutality and inhumanity of slavery, but after you do the research it’s no longer intellectual any more, no longer just historical record — you feel it in your bones,” Tarantino said. “It makes you angry, and you want to do something.” As was the case with Tarantino’s Nazi revenge fantasy, Inglourious Basterds , the title character of Django Unchained , who’s played by Jamie Foxx , gets to exact a great deal of cinematic retribution against the movie’s slave owners and their accomplices. But Tarantino told the BAFTA crowd that his movie is about more than payback: “When slave narratives are done on film, they tend to be historical with a capital H, with an arms-length quality to them,” he said. “I wanted to break that history-under-glass aspect, I wanted to throw a rock through that glass and shatter it for all times, and take you into it.” “I did a lot of research particularly in how the business of slavery worked, and what exactly was the social breakdown inside a plantation: the white families that owned the houses, the black servants who worked inside the house, the black servants that were in the fields, and the white overseers and workers that were hired to work there.” Of special interest to Tarantino was the southern aristocracy which he called “an absurd, grotesque parody of European aristocracy.” From that same Q&A session, the website Bleeding Cool is reporting that Tarantino told the audience “I could conceive maybe someday doing a 30′s gangster picture, or something like that.”  He also said that he could do “another Western, actually.” [ The Guardian , Bleeding Cool ] Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Johnny Depp Teams with Douglas Brinkley on Woody Guthrie Novel

It may seem like an unlikely pairing, the academic and author Douglas Brinkley teaming up with one of the world’s biggest movie stars to edit a little-known unpublished novel by the late folk singer/songwriter Woody Guthrie titled House of Earth . But that is in fact in the works. Johnny Depp is partnering with Brinkley whose writings eventually informed documentaries including Spike Lee’s Hurricane Katrina work When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts as well as the 2004 doc Going Upriver: The Long War of John Kerry . Brinkley stumbled upon the work, which Guthrie finished in 1947, while researching an article about Bob Dylan for Rolling Stone. Brinkley happened upon the manuscript and told the New York Times he did not know of its existence. He cited two biographies about the late folk singer, who would have turned 100 this coming Saturday (July 14th), but neither mention Guthrie’s manuscript, which he completed in 1947. The story revolves around a West Texas couple are confronted by banks and lumber companies as they work to build adobe homes as protection against harsh weather. Brinkley and Depp wrote an essay for the New York Times Book Review about Guthrie’s work, describing it as a “portrait” of life in the Dust Bowl during the Great Depression. Pitched somewhere between rural realism and proletarian protest, somewhat static in terms of narrative drive, “House of Earth” nonetheless offers a searing portrait of the Panhandle and its marginalized Great Depression residents. Guthrie successfully mixes Steinbeck’s narrative verve with D. H. Lawrence’s openness to erotic exploration… Guthrie was born in Oklahoma and eventually traveled with migrant workers to California during during the era and was frequently linked to left-wing groups at the time. His guitar often had the slogan “This Machine Kills Fascists.” Exactly how the Douglas Brinkley/Johnny Depp tie-in has been left vague, though one can’t help but think there is a possible movie in the works longterm. The two have known each other since the mid ’90s through Hunter S. Thompson. The two partnered in writing the liner notes on a soundtrack for Alex Gibney’s recent doc Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson . Birdemic 2 Teaser: Just Like The Avengers! (Minus the Budget)

Don’t try to conceal how wildly ecstatic you are over the forthcoming Birdemic 2: The Resurrection , “filmmaker” James Nguyen’s sequel to his micro-budget 2010 “classic” Birdemic: Shock and Terror . Weep, already. Don’t hold back — especially now that there is a teaser trailer. Nguyen’s no-mage to The Birds has acquired a slightly more contemporary spirit, invoking the post-credits scene from The Avengers despite apparently setting to rest Nguyen’s insistence that his sequel would be in 3-D . Like I said, weep, already . Anyway, these 30 seconds may be light on screeching avian terror, but they do quietly portend the barely watchable joys to come. [ Bleeding Cool via Filmdrunk ]

Marvel Casting Round-Up: ‘Thor 2,’ ‘Iron Man 3’ Add Villains

Just last night, the studio announced casting for villains in the upcoming sequels “Thor 2” and “Iron Man 3” , while Jon Favreau confirmed he would reprise his role as Tony Stark’s driver, Happy Hogan. In two separate scoops from Variety, the trade paper reported that Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen is in talks to play the villain in the Alan Taylor-directed “Thor” sequel, and that Ashley Hamilton , son of George, could join “Iron Man 3” as the villain Firepower . The identity of Mikkelsen’s potential character has yet to be revealed. And while he won’t be returning to direct the third “Iron Man” movie, Jon Favreau will be coming back to reprise his role as Happy Hogan. The actor-turned-director tweeted a photo of his personalized chair from the set of “Iron Man 3.” Favreau had previously turned down an offer to direct his third “Iron Man” film, allowing “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” director Shane Black to take a crack at billionaire playboy and philanthropist Tony Stark. It was unclear whether Favreau would return to play Happy, who had a significantly larger role in “Iron Man 2,” but recent word that Favreau would still be largely involved is now confirmed. Rumors have already begun to circulate about the identity of Mikkelsen’s character. The most popular theory involves a character called the Executioner, a rumor started by Bleeding Cool . “Thor 2” is scheduled to go in front of cameras later this year for a fall 2013 release, while production on “Iron Man 3” is already under way for its summer 2013 bow. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Culture War Update: Director Speaks Out, Title Cut in Half

After begging and pleading with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan community to please, please not engage in preemptive flame warfare over the rumors and vagaries surrounding the reboot of their beloved franchise, I now recognize the futility of my attempts at diplomacy. This comes after the film’s attached director Jonathan Liebesman — also of this week’s Wrath of the Titans and last year’s eminently regarded ( ahem ) Battle: Los Angeles — only complicated matters with his comments about the kerfuffle. And then there’s the movie’s reported name change. Liebesman toed the company line at last weekend’s Titans junket, urging TMNT devotees to calm down about producer Michael Bay’s proposed alien-turtle-ooze influence — which apparently “comes straight from the series.” I can’t believe I just wrote that, or this: “Look, it’s so funny — if everyone was such a die-hard fan, they would know that the TCRI canisters where the ooze comes from. That is alien ooze. Now I’m not saying what Michael said is exactly what the movie is, because we’re sitting in a room now figuring everything out. So we don’t know, but we are like Michael said: we’re expanding it, and the expansion will be true to the mythology. I promise you: fans will love it.” Even if those fans are to take Liebesman at his word, there’s also this reported nugget that no doubt have them soiling their Donatello jammies: Bleeding Cool has verified that the working title of the upcoming Paramount-Nickelodeon Turtle movie from producer Michael Bay and director Jonathan Libesman is going by the working title of Ninja Turtles . We know all too well where the “Mutant” bit went, but now it seems we’re also losing “Teenage.” We haven’t been able to get a definite statement as to why this title change is occurring, and our sources are not 100% clear on whether or not the Turtles will indeed be adolescents. One of our sources has said: “It seems to be driven by marketing. Think of John Carter and how Disney wouldn’t allow for a title with either ‘Princess’ or ‘Mars.'” Whatever.
