Rich Wisken makes his living as a comedian. But he found nothing funny about a recent flight on board JetStar. In a letter that has gone viral and split the Internet into two camps, Wisken GOES OFF on the Australian airline for sitting him alongside a rather large passenger in the Exit Row. “As I boarded the plane, I mentally high-fived myself for paying the additional $25 for an emergency seat,” Wisken wrote of the incident. “I was imagining all that extra room, when I was suddenly distracted by what appeared to be an infant hippopotamus located halfway down the aisle. As I got closer, I was relieved to see that it wasn’t a dangerous semi-aquatic African mammal, but a morbidly obese human being.” Much to Wisken’s chagrin, he was unable to change seats, leading to a four-hour trip that was ruined by “fetid whiffs of body odour” that emanated from this “fleshy boulder.” Wisken goes on to complain that the flight attendants on board couldn’t have cared less about his situation, even though plenty of other seats were available. They were simply occupied by passengers lying across the entire row. The comedian says this is not a joke; he’s looking to be compensated for the “physical pain and mental suffering” that comes from being so close to “human blubber;” and concludes: Imagine going out for dinner and a movie, only to have your night ruined by a fat mess who eats half your meal then blocks 50% of the screen. Isn’t that exactly the same as having someone who can’t control their calorie intake occupying half your seat on a flight? Of course it is, so that’s why I’m demanding a full refund of my ticket, including the $25 for an emergency row seat. Read the full letter at Wisken’s blog and decide: Fair or foul?

So… what did you do in 2013? Photographer Kent Frost attended some weddings… suffered through an ice storm in May… watched the Boston Marathon bombing … and welcomed his first child into the world. The latter event took place on November 14 and it became the centerpiece for the back half of this amazing video, which is comprised of one second of each day of last year. Alicia Ann Lynch is very sorry. The 22-year old Michigan native dressed as a victim of the Boston Marathon bombing for Halloween this year and has been feeling the wrath of the Internet community ever since a photo of the outfit went viral. Boston Bombing Costume Sparks Outrage She tells BuzzFeed that folks also found a picture of her driver’s license online and have sent vile packages to her address, while issuing death threats to both her and her parents. Lynch adds that she has since deleted all her social media accounts and got fired as a result of the costume. “Hope your mom gets cancer,” reads a message on BarStoolSports(dot)com. Elsewhere, Sydney Corcoran – who was severely injured, along with her mother, in the April attack – Tweeted the following at Lynch. “@SomeSKANKinMI You should be ashamed, my mother lost both her legs and I almost died in the marathon. You need a filter.” In response to the backlash, Lynch has issued both an apology and plea in an email to BuzzFeed. It reads: It seems as though my outfit was too soon, and will always be that way, it was wrong of me and very distasteful. My costume was not meant to disrespect anyone, ever. I am truly sorry to anyone that I may have offended or hurt with this. I know my apology doesn’t ever fix anything that has been done, but at least know that I am being sincere. I can’t undo my actions or make up for them, but my apology is a start. I myself have been through tragic events, I just handle mine differently because that is how I was taught to. I realize I was in the wrong with this and again, I am truly sorry. I wore a costume to work, with people that know me, and wouldn’t get offended by it. I had even ran the idea by a friend whom had his father in the marathon and he didn’t have an issue with it. What I did may have been wrong, but is it truly right to wish harm upon someone and say that you’re doing it for the victims? As being a part of a tragic event I never would ever wish what had happened to me upon someone else, as I can say most people wouldn’t wish death upon someone to ‘make it right’. Lesson learned. Feelings expressed on both sides. Let’s close this case, shall we, people?

The vaunted cover of Rolling Stone magazine has most often been the domain of musicians, actors, comedians, and the occasional politician. But this week, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev gets the honors. The issue, which hits newsstands Friday, features an picture of an unsmiling Boston Marathon bombing suspect above the bolded legend “The Bomber.” The subheading promises to reveal “[h]ow a popular, promising student was failed by his family, fell into radical Islam, and became a monster.” What it may reveal, however, is how a magazine can stoop to a new low. The RS cover quickly drew sharp, negative reaction on social media. “Boycott Rolling Stone” became a trending Twitter topic in Boston, and Northeastern University criminologist Jack Levin worried about its message. “If they want to become famous, kill somebody,” Levin said of adding to the hype and glorifying his actions to other potentially disaffected people. Already, Tsarnaev fan sites and conspiracy theorists have become a cult of sorts. Some fear that with more PR like this, such a trend will escalate. Federal authorities allege that Dzohkhar Tsarnaev and his brother Tamerlan planted two bombs near the finish line of the Boston Marathon April 15. The explosions killed three people and injured over 200 others. Tamerlan was killed by police and Dzokhar captured after a massive manhunt. On July 10, Tsarnaev pleaded not guilty to 30 counts of a federal indictment. If the government decides to seek capital punishment against the defendant, Tsarnaev could face the death penalty if convicted on one of 17 counts. What do you think of putting him on the cover of Rolling Stone? Why not? He’s topical and interesting … What a disgrace. View Poll »
