‘There are a lot of people who can’t speak on what I be speaking on, so I’m like their voice,’ Woods tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Chevy Woods Photo: MTV News Mixtape Daily Main Pick Headliner : Chevy Woods Representing : Pittsburgh Mixtape : Gangland Real Spit : In order to get his musical priorities in order, Chevy Woods had to leave the streets behind. But the Taylor Gang general hasn’t forgotten where he’s came from — not in the least. On his upcoming Gangland mixtape, the Pittsburgh MC represents for those too entrenched in the streets to represent themselves. “I came up with the title Gangland because we’re the Taylors and at the same time, there are a lot of people who can’t speak on what I be speaking on, so I’m like their voice,” Chevy Woods told Mixtape Daily. Not only was Chev inspired by his real-life crew, he also used the History Channel’s “Gangland” documentary show as a muse too. “You know, Gangland is the same type of situation as the TV show. People be speaking for the people that can’t speak, and they be showin’ their faces for the people that can’t speak,” he said of the series that has documented notorious gangs like the Mexican Mafia, the Bloods and the Crips. “So I just took the little spin off of both of those things: my gang and the TV show.” On the Young Jerz-produced “U.S.A.,” Woods documents his growth from the block to world tours with Wiz Khalifa. All the added attention has taken some getting used to, but on “Vice,” Chev Bags welcomes all spectators. “I’m out in Memphis with Juice, we into ballin’ for real/ You n—as talkin’ like you scoring never out on the field,” he raps, taunting his rivals. Last year, Woods dropped two very different mixtapes. On Red Cup Music, the TGOD MC partied hard on tracks like “She in Love” and “Jimmy Fallon,” while on The Cookout, he flew alongside Wiz on a number of smoke anthems. Gangland, his first 2012 tape, is distinctly different. On it, Chev shows a darker side, adding yet another layer to his artistic makeup. Joints to Check For

Will Kelly Clarkson show her midriff? What will Madge wear at halftime? Pop-culture bets give football-phobes plenty to tune in for Sunday. By James Montgomery Madonna Photo: Daniel Mihailescu/ AFP/ Getty Images Not to get all general here, but when you get down to it, there are really only two types of people in the world: those who care about the Super Bowl and those who don’t. The former will need absolutely zero incentive to tune into this Sunday’s retribution-stoked Super Bowl XLVI, which pits the New England Patriots against the New York Giants in a rematch of one of the most epic Supes of all time, XLII, which saw — wait, if you’re going to watch, you already know what happened in that first championship tilt (David Tyree, Plax Burress on the slant-and-go, 18-1, etc.), and suffice it to say, you’re salivating with anticipation over the next chapter in this rivalry. For the latter, well, that last paragraph probably makes about as much sense as the fact that the New York Giants actually play their home games in New Jersey, and, as such, there’s no way you’re going to waste your Sunday watching what amounts to 240 minutes of commercials intermittently broken up by the occasional football play (unless you’re anxiously awaiting the premiere of “The Voice,” that is). But, really, you should reconsider that stance — mainly because of prop bets. For the uninitiated, props (short for “propositions”) are bets placed on the occurrence — or non-occurrence — of events during a game that have little-to-no actual impact on the outcome of that game. Stuff like “Which color Gatorade will the winning team dump on its head coach” or “Number of times (insert name of famous athlete’s girlfriend) will be shown during the TV telecast.” They are supremely silly, not to mention incredibly suicidal, wagers, and not surprisingly — given that it’s the biggest football game of the year — Las Vegas oddsmakers work overtime churning them out during the Super Bowl. Shoot, more often than not, most of those Super Bowl props have absolutely nothing to do with the game itself. There are not only odds on the length of Kelly Clarkson’s national anthem performance, but what kind of outfit she’ll be wearing while singing it. Which means that, whether you know who BenJarvus Green-Ellis is or not, there are still plenty of reasons to tune in to Sunday’s big game. So in the hopes of inspiring you non-fans to watch, we’ve reached out to the online oddsmakers at to get their lines on some of the most outrageous Super Bowl prop bets. And in case you’re wondering: Yes, there’s a science to these kinds of things. “I sat down and watched six to seven videos of Kelly Clarkson singing the anthem at past sporting events, timing all of them,” Bovada head oddsmaker Pat Morrow told MTV News. “Once that was done, I took some things into consideration: that she will be indoors, [that] it is the Super Bowl and people have tendency to take a little longer, and came up with 1 minute, 34 seconds. And I think we are bang-on, because we have had it up over a week and have taken a lot on both sides and have not had to move the number.” See! So, without further ado, are some of our favorite music-centric prop bets. Oh, and we realize some of the numbers may confuse you, so just consider this: If you were to place $100 on a 2/1 bet, and win, you’d walk away with $200 (plus your $100 back). Conversely, that $100 on a 1/2 bet would net you just $50. If you were to bet $100 on a +200 line, it means you’d take home $200 in profit (plus your initial $100). A line of -200 means you’d need to bet $200 just to win $100 (the more probable the outcome, the more you have to put up to turn a profit; Vegas wasn’t built on winners, after all). Oh, and an over/under bet is simply a wager on whether an event will go over or under the stated time. Confused? Of course you are. After all, prop bets aren’t supposed to be about logic, they’re supposed to be about insanity. So let’s take a look at the lines! How long will it take Kelly Clarkson to sing the National Anthem? Over/under: 1 minute, 34 seconds. What will Kelly Clarkson wear to sing the national anthem?

Miller took MTV News back to the ‘Burgh and introduced us to some of his city’s hottest up-and-coming talent. By Rob Markman Mac Miller Photo: MTV News Yes, the world knows Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller , but Pittsburgh has a wealth of hip-hop talent. With the Steel City’s two breakout stars already accounted for, MTV News took a trip to the ‘Burgh to see who’s got next. “A lot of people are talented. There are just a million talented people out there,” Miller told MTV News when he took us on a tour through his hometown in December. Acts like Boaz, Chevy Woods, B White and Mayo of the 58’s, Jabari X and Varsity Squad have been repping Pittsburgh locally for some time now, and while Mac supports all the city’s homegrown talent, if he had to pick one act to break out nationwide, it would be the Come Up, a.k.a. the duo of Vinny Radio and Franchise. “I brought them on tour and I plan on bringing them out on tour, so if it’s up to me, they’re gonna be the next people that come out the ‘Burgh,” Miller said. “But there’s definitely a lot more people who could; it’s not just Vinny and Fran.” Mac Miller introduces Pittsburgh’s hottest producers. The Come Up exist as a part of a larger hip-hop collective called the 58’s, along with rappers B White and Mayo. That union exemplifies the type of unity that exists in Pittsburgh’s rap scene. “It’s a small city … so pretty much we’ve all been familiar with each other for a long time,” Franchise said. “Everybody in this city who’s pretty much doing it legit, we’ve all been trying to get it and put the city on.” Taylor Gang’s Chevy Woods echoed a similar sentiment. “Everybody’s hardworking, and it’s not like a big music scene out there, so when you got somethin’, you just go with it,” he said. “Everybody sees the light that shines on [Wiz Khalifa] and Mac [Miller] and now it’s trickling down to everybody else.” Wiz Khalifa motivates Pittsburgh’s up-and-coming artists. There is a pretty diverse group of rap characters that come out of Pittsburgh. Wiz is a hitmaker who dedicates a lot of his catalog to partying and getting high, while Mac embodies a youthful spirit. Boaz is street, and female MC Kellee Maize spits sociopolitical bars. “To be honest, I do think Boaz is right there on the cusp. I think I’m maybe close to the cusp too,” Kellee said, laughing. “I just bring that underground feel,” Boaz said, describing his deeply-rooted street sound. “I embrace the culture of that poverty line that I’m speaking about.” For years, Time Bomb has been a epicenter for Pittsburgh hip-hop. More than just a clothing store, Time Bomb has become a place for local ‘Burgh MCs to congregate and sling their mixtapes to hungry fans. The shop’s owner, Brick, has seen many young artists walk through his doors, including Miller and Khalifa. When it comes to the future of Pittsburgh hip-hop, Brick is a wide-eyed optimist. “I think Mac and Wiz opened the door, but there’s gonna be an army of producers, an army of rappers, and they’re gonna be all different. People know: Pittsburgh, it is what it is, it’s a hardworking town,” he said. “I can name 100 people, because I want everyone to make it from here, you understand? This is Pittsburgh.” Who do you believe will be the next rap act to emerge from Pittsburgh? Tell us in the comments! Take a look back at MTV News’ Back to the ‘Burgh with Mac Miller and see how we spotlighted the city’s vibrant hip-hop scene. ‘All of my adult life has been economic downturn,’ a young activist tells MTV News about corporate greed, unemployment, social injustice. By Uptin Saiidi, with additional reporting by Akshay Bhansali Occupy Wall Street protests in New York City Photo: Mario Tama/Getty Images NEW YORK — What started as just a dozen college students camping overnight on Wall Street three weeks ago has mushroomed into thousands of protesters and Street-inspired gatherings across the country, from Los Angeles to Boston. On Monday, a number of protesters dressed up as zombies, holding Monopoly money in their mouths in a gesture to financial workers. The crowd was especially energized after more than 700 of them were arrested over the weekend by New York City Police Department officers, who claimed they were blocking traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge. Thousands marched from the “base camp” at Zuccotti Park, a plaza near the city’s financial center, chanting, “Take the bridge!” Even as the number of protesters continues to fluctuate, the gatherings have remained relatively small by New York City standards. The longevity of the unrest, however, is far from normal. MTV News recently headed downtown and caught up with some of the young protesters to see what exactly was on their minds. Mike Chrisemer, a 24-year-old graduate student at the City University of New York, said he got involved on the second day of the protest and doesn’t plan to abandon the cause. “The general feeling is that the top 1 percent of people is ruling over the rest of us, the 99 percent, and it’s not the status quo that we want to see anymore.” Sympathetic supporters have been donating food to the “occupiers,” and those who camp overnight at the park rely on portable gas for laptop energy. Social media networks like Twitter have, of course, helped spark interest in the cause and serve as a vehicle to spread its message. For those who cannot get to NYC, a live stream is available at the Occupy Wall Street website . Celebrity involvement has also helped stoke media attention. Lupe Fiasco , Susan Sarandon, Mark Ruffalo and filmmaker Michael Moore made appearances in the past week, while “30 Rock” star Alec Baldwin has expressed support over his Twitter At around 1 p.m. ET last Friday, an online rumor began to spread that Radiohead would be giving a surprise performance that afternoon in support of the protest. The buzz was put to rest when the band’s rep later denied the group would perform, but it’s likely that many curious onlookers (and Radiohead fans) had headed to the park anticipating the event. By 4:30 p.m., a statement was posted on the Occupy Wall Street site apologizing for the miscommunication; they further explained that an email from Radiohead’s manager turned out to be a fake and cited the challenges of verifying information in an open-source movement. The band’s no-show didn’t slow down momentum though. Late Friday afternoon, an influx of curious spectators wandered the park, many admitting they came after hearing the concert rumors. “That probably brought a lot of these people here, but they’re still here. It’s not just about Radiohead, it’s not a pop culture movement, it’s a real movement to challenge the status quo,” Chrisemer told us. The protests come at a time when the unemployment rate among American youths under 25 is at 18 percent compared to the national rate of 9 percent. Nearly half of young Americans are underemployed, and the amount of student loan debt has recently surpassed credit card debt. Tim Payne, a 20-year-old New York University undergrad, said he had been coming to the park between classes to hold signs and participate in the protest. “College tuition keeps going up and the top 400 people have more wealth than the lowest 125 million. I have all these loans out and they’re profiting off that, and I don’t think that’s fair.” Some reports have been critical of the protesters for reportedly failing to deliver a clear message about their grievances. Instead, critics say, the rally has become a gathering place for anyone dissatisfied with, well, just about anything. When MTV News spoke with some of the young activists on Friday, their cardboard signs had messages that varied from dissatisfaction with financial corruption, NYPD police brutality, discrimination against Muslims and workers’ rights. “People have so much frustration with government and media, and they’re taking this out as an outlet in different ways,” NYU student Payne explained. It’s still unclear whether the protests will succeed in channeling frustration into a lasting movement similar to the Tea Party’s conservative movement, which was started in 2009 by a group of Americans fed up with the status quo for different reasons. Occupy Wall Street protesters seem to be hopeful that they will have a voice that continues to be heard and gains momentum into the 2012 elections. “It’s more than just Wall Street,” Payne added. “It’s the fact that all of my adult life has been economic downturn. And I heard a quote once: it was ‘When did the future change from a promise to a threat?’ I feel like the people here still have faith in the future and are trying to change it.” Share your thoughts on the ongoing Wall Street protests in the comments below! Formerly known as Kev tha Hustla, Taylor Gang MC tells Mixtape Daily about being on the Rolling Papers Tour. By Rob Markman Chevy Woods Photo: MTV News Fire Starter: Chevy Woods Wiz Khalifa ‘s Taylor Gang is no one-man army: Meet Pittsburgh spitter Chevy Woods. About eight years ago, back when he went by the name Kev tha Hustla, the MC who hails from the Hazelwood section of the ‘Burgh met Wiz at ID Labs studio. Immediately, the two collaborated and hit it off, forming a brotherly bond and a new crew called the Taylor Gang. Woods developed a passion for rap while he attended Robert Morris University in Pennsylvania, but the street’s allure was strong. It wasn’t until 2009 when Wiz, who was seeing his star rise, convinced his bud to leave the block alone and focus on music. “He was like, ‘Come on, man. I’m gonna show you a different way. Let’s make some money, real money. Leave that sh– alone,’ ” Chevy told Mixtape Daily of his decision to switch hustles. “I just cut the street sh– out.” As Kev tha Hustla, Chevy was buzzing and had already released tapes like The Corner’s Correspondent and Animal , but after a name change, Woods scored a breakout tape earlier this year when he dropped Red Cup Music . “I think I found myself when I put that tape out. I really found a style for myself. Some laid-back, cool music. Drink a little bit, smoke a little bit,” he said. Now, CW is on the Rolling Papers Tour , where he opens for Big Sean and Khalifa. The crowd has been receptive to his set as he performs songs like the party-starting “Jimmy Fallon” and smoothed-out “Campaign” from Red Cup . “It be nights where I be with my palms sweating before I go on, and then after I get off I be like, ‘Man, I’m ready to shed a tear,’ because this sh– is crazy to me,” he said about the love he’s gotten on the road. “It’s new, it’s fresh, and I’m just trying to take it all in.” Next up for Chevy is his The Cookout mixtape, set to drop in August. On it, Woods promises a soundtrack for those summertime barbeques. And while the tape will be billed as a solo affair, he confirms that his buddy Wiz will appear on about half of the tracks. “That’s where I’m trying to take you: to my backyard with my mom on the grill and my homeys around,” he explained. “I just want them to hear where I come from.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out .
