The Verge: Luke Evans

Luke Evans is your new leading man — you just don’t know it yet. The Welsh 30-year-old made his name on the British stage by starring in productions of Miss Saigon and Taboo , and since he transitioned into film last year, he’s booked role after role after role. In Robin Hood and Clash of the Titans , Evans had smaller supporting parts, but he turned heads as the romantic lead opposite Gemma Arterton in the Cannes comedy Tamara Drewe , and after he finishes Tarsem Singh’s Immortals , he’ll be playing Aramis in Paul W.S. Anderson’s The Three Musketeers (with a cast that includes Orlando Bloom and Christoph Waltz) and the title character in the biopic Vivaldi , opposite Jessica Biel. Not a bad haul for someone who hadn’t even appeared in a film until this year! Movieline caught up with the busy Evans to get the scoop on all of his upcoming projects and the one movie musical he’s desperate to be a part of.

Friday Box Office: Ass Kicked

And you thought Watchmen was a box office disappointment. Expected to take in upwards of $30 million, the much (much) publicized Kick-Ass could only muster $7.5 million on Friday night, meaning it might not even crack $20 million . Maybe the geeks haven’t inherited the earth. Death at a Funeral didn’t fare much better: the comedy pulled in an estimated $6 million on Friday and could wind up behind Date Night before the weekend is through. The very underwhelming top-five after the jump.

Titans Director Not Too Dazzled with Fake 3-D Either

So despite your instincts counseling you over the weekend to take the plunge and enjoy Why Did I Get Married Too , you splurged instead on Clash of the Titans in glorious 3-D. Or maybe not “glorious,” but maybe a modifier more akin to “serviceable.” Or “passable.” Or any other synonym for “half-assed but full-priced” that you want to conjure. And if one new interview is any indication, director Louis Leterrier will even help you out.

Friday Box Office: Titans Will Cash

If it’s a weekend in 2010, you can be sure that there’s a 3D film sucking up dollars. The overly hyped Clash of the Titans turned the trick yesterday with an estimated $30 million (including $4.2 million from Thursday screenings), meaning it will shatter the Easter weekend record of $40.2 million held by—wait for it—the immortal Scary Movie 4 . As for the other openers: Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too landed in second with $13 million (if only it were in 3D), while The Last Song finished fourth, with just $7 million. Don’t fret too much, though, Miley Cyrus fans: Song has already taken in around $17 million since opening on Wednesday and should finish the weekend with $25 million. And with that, the butterflies fly away . The top-five after the jump.
