Luke Evans and Henry Cavill on the Blood, Sweat, and Skipped Meals That Went into Those Immortals Abs

It was an agonizing enough process just getting cast in Tarsem’s Immortals , stars Luke Evans and Henry Cavill told Movieline over the weekend at WonderCon, where audiences got their first look at the November fantasy pic. But the real struggle, they say, was in reaching and maintaining the physique required of their roles as Zeus and Theseus, respectively — characters for whom godlike perfection was a prerequisite. But hey, no pressure!

Is Immortals Helmer Tarsem the Honey Badger of Directors? A Movieline Investigation

New theory: Immortals director Tarsem Singh (excuse us, visionary director Tarsem ) is the honey badger of film directors. In an unprecedented move Saturday in San Francisco, the filmmaker behind such films as The Cell and The Fall stole the hearts and minds of WonderCon attendees away from Cowboys & Aliens helmer Jon Favreau — and mind you, Favreau is so popular that he has his own entrance music (“Back in Black,” natch). So how did visionary director Tarsem bring the house down during the panel for The Immortals , a 300 -styled movie he described as “Caravaggio meets Fight Club ?” Hit the jump for highlights from TarsemCon.

Check Out These Tang-Soaked Character Posters From Immortals

You’ll be hearing more from our intrepid Jen Yamato from the WonderCon panel on Tarsem Singh’s god fight flick Immortals later on, but for now take a gander at these just released posters for some of the characters. Pictured are new Superman Henry Cavill as Theseus, Luke Evans as Zeus, Kellan Lutz as Poseidon, Isabel Lucas as Athena and Daniel Sharman as Aries. Other than the dusky nectarine color scheme, it looks like the movie is very consciously trying to get some of that sweet, sweet 300 money by aping the look and feel of that other sword ‘n sandals stab epic. But bonus points to anyone who can tell me what that Tang-like liquid is that’s swirling all around them.

Nicholas Hoult to Play Beast in X-Men: First Class

Need further proof that it you want to appear in X-Men: First Class you better be a Movieline Verge alum? According to reports, Nicholas Hoult has been cast to play Beast in the Matthew Vaughn directed X-Men prequel scheduled to hit theaters next summer. Hoult — who has most recently appeared in A Single Man and Clash of the Titans — would join fellow Verge grads Alice Eve , new father Aaron Johnson and Michael Fassbender in the cast. James McAvoy is there, too, but he technically wasn’t a Verge-r , so whatever. Luke Evans , you’re on the clock. [ Deadline ]

The Verge: Luke Evans

Luke Evans is your new leading man — you just don’t know it yet. The Welsh 30-year-old made his name on the British stage by starring in productions of Miss Saigon and Taboo , and since he transitioned into film last year, he’s booked role after role after role. In Robin Hood and Clash of the Titans , Evans had smaller supporting parts, but he turned heads as the romantic lead opposite Gemma Arterton in the Cannes comedy Tamara Drewe , and after he finishes Tarsem Singh’s Immortals , he’ll be playing Aramis in Paul W.S. Anderson’s The Three Musketeers (with a cast that includes Orlando Bloom and Christoph Waltz) and the title character in the biopic Vivaldi , opposite Jessica Biel. Not a bad haul for someone who hadn’t even appeared in a film until this year! Movieline caught up with the busy Evans to get the scoop on all of his upcoming projects and the one movie musical he’s desperate to be a part of.
