Only one nude premiere in theaters this weekend, but it’s a doozy: 300: Rise of an Empire (2014). I know you all probably remember Lena Headey ’s great naked scene in the original , before she became Queen Cersei on Game of Thrones . If not, we’ve got a reminder. Some directors clearly have no filter and suffer for it; others choose to live altogether filter-less, playing the game their own way, on their own terms. Which is why earlier this year Movieline anointed Tarsem Singh ( The Cell, The Fall ) the honey badger of Hollywood ; an indie film talent recently gone mainstream — who wore a homemade shirt proclaiming “I’ve been media trained” at WonderCon — Tarsem’s infamously cheeky public persona might threaten to overtake his work if only his films, just three features to date counting this week’s Immortals , weren’t so distinctive and gorgeous.

You’ll be hearing more from our intrepid Jen Yamato from the WonderCon panel on Tarsem Singh’s god fight flick Immortals later on, but for now take a gander at these just released posters for some of the characters. Pictured are new Superman Henry Cavill as Theseus, Luke Evans as Zeus, Kellan Lutz as Poseidon, Isabel Lucas as Athena and Daniel Sharman as Aries. Other than the dusky nectarine color scheme, it looks like the movie is very consciously trying to get some of that sweet, sweet 300 money by aping the look and feel of that other sword ‘n sandals stab epic. But bonus points to anyone who can tell me what that Tang-like liquid is that’s swirling all around them.

Three years ago, the screen adaptation of Frank Miller’s brutal graphic novel 300 became a global smash. Or it was a smash everywhere but Iran, which somehow objected to the depiction of an androgynous, bedazzled Persian king Xerxes laying cruel waste to the scrappy, ab-happy Spartans. The ethnic implications seemed the least of moviegoers’ concerns — not to mention Miller’s own, which have now returned to the mega-pierced monarch for the prequel Xerxes . The author still has a ways to go on the project, but I think we all know a movie adaptation is inevitable. As such, a first look at Xerxes — who makes Mr. T look like the Dalai Lama — clues us in to what will be pissing Iran off in the next two to three years.
