Michigan State Football STUNS the Sports World

Move over, Cal-Stanford. Take a seat for a moment, Alabama-Auburn. The ending to Saturday afternoon's Michigan State-Michigan game would like to join your conclusions in all-time college football lore. Michigan held a 23-21 lead with 10 seconds remaining. The team faced a fourth down around midfield and Michigan State was out of timeouts. All the Wolverines had to do was get off a punt of virtually any length off in order to win the game; move to 7-1; re-establish its as the state's powerhouse; and remain in contention for national title. Then the ball was snapped… the punter dropped it… picked it up… had it knocked from his hands… and it miraculously flew directly into the arms of a Michigan State defender. 38 adventurous yards later, Michigan State had score a literal last-second touchdown and won the game 27-23, leaving nearly every sports fan around the country to sit and wonder: WHAT THE HECK JUST HAPPENED?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Jesus Take The Wheel–TLC Shows Half Ton Woman Accused Of Killing Her Nephew In New Special!!!

This story has us asking way too many questions… Mayra Rosales weighs more than 1000lbs and is bedridden due to her severe obesity. After babysitting her sisters four kids on the regular for months, she confessed to crushing and killing her two-year-old nephew, Eliseo, Jr. back in 2008. Sadly enough we found out the conclusions of the case so we’ll give you a quick spoiler alert [STOP READING NOW!!] if you want to watch the special without knowing the whole story. Here’s the breakdown…Because of her condition, Mayra was bedridden. And because of her inability to move, she was not supposed to be taking care of her sister Jaime‘s kids, but she often babysat them. Although lawyers on both sides began to realize that Mayra hadn’t killed Eliseo Jr., she still had to go on trial. It took months to find a court room big enough (no pun intended) to accommodate Mayra and even then, they had to take walls out to get her in. Mayra confessed that her sister Jaime had been abusing Eliseo for a while and that in one instance, she’d whacked her son with a hairbrush when he refused to eat…but when the paramedics came to take Eliseo Jr. out of the home, Jaime begged Mayra to take the blame. “I thought I was dying anyway,” Mayra said, “so I decided to admit that I’d done it to protect my sister because I love her.” Jaime showed Mayra how much she loved her and bailed, leaving Mayra to possibly face a death sentence. Jaime did return though and confessed to killing Eliseo Jr. and was sentenced to 15 years in jail. The stress of the case was too much for Mayra’s health and sadly, she is confined to a hospital bed at a medical center for the super-obese. She’s said that it feels just like being in jail. This is a sad story for so many reasons…the full episode isn’t on until October and you’ll be damn sure we’re going to watch! Images via TLC

Empathy is What Really Sets Vegetarians Apart (at least Neurologically Speaking)

An article appeared in PLoS one this May which describes brain differences between Vegetarians, Vegans and Omnivores in the way they process pictures of animal suffering. I wasn't going to write about this until later this week, but since the always popular Scientific Fundamentalist has a related post out at the moment, I figure I should “jump on the bandwagon” with this right away. So here we go: The study in question is a neuroimaging study intent on investigating whether “the neural representation of conditions of abuse and suffering might be different among subjects who made different feeding choice due to ethical reasons, and thus result in the engagement of different components of the brain networks associated with empathy and social cognition” The hypothesis behind this study is based on the observation that Vegetarians and Vegans tend to base their decision to avoid animal products on ethical grounds. Assuming that Vegetarians and Vegans – because of their underlying moral philosophies – show greater empathy towards animal suffering, it is very well possible that these differences in empathy extend beyond the animal domain and show up as general differences in the degree of empathy felt towards other humans also; even at a neurological level. The study – in basic terms – investigates this hypothesis by placing subjects into a functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) machine and looking at the “activation” of different brain areas as subjects view a randomized series of pictures. The pictures used for this study included neutral scenes and an even share of scenes depicting various kinds of animal and human suffering. The first main finding of this study is that, compared to Omnivores, Vegans and Vegetarians show higher activation of empathy related brain areas (e.g. Anterior Cingular Cortex and left Inferior Frontal Gyrus) when observing scenes of suffering; whether it be animal or human suffering. Further, pictures of animal suffering (in contrast to pictures human suffering) recruited specific brain regions in Vegans and Vegetarians that were not differentially recruited by Omnivores. These were areas which are thought to be associated with higher-order representations of the self and self values (e.g. medial Prefrontal Cortex). In addition to generally higher activations in the above mentioned areas, a second main finding of this study is that there are certain brain areas which only Vegetarians and Vegans seem to activate when processing pictures of suffering. In particular, when viewing pictures of human suffering, Vegetarians in this study recruited additional brain areas thought to be associated with bodily representations that distinguish self from others. (Notably these areas were particularly active when mutilations were shown). The study has – of course – its own shortcomings, and I am somewhat breaking one of my own rules here by presenting fMRI related research without a thorough discussion of the statistics involved, however I feel vindicated by the fact that the authors themselves remain moderate in their conclusions by stating that “Our results converge with theories that consider empathy as accommodating a shared representation of emotions and sensations between individuals, allowing us to understand others. They also led us to speculate that the neuronal bases of empathy involve several distinct components including mirroring mechanisms, as well as emotion contagion and representations of connectedness with the self. In addition, brain areas similar to those showing different emotional responses between groups in our study have also been found to be modulated by religiosity, further supporting a key role of affect and empathy in moral reasoning and social values.” [italics added]. All things considered, the study suggests that Vegetarians are more empathetic to the suffering of others, but as I contemplate the well-documented health benefits of a Vegetarian diet, as well as the environmental and social hazards of current meat eating habits and production practices, I think it is obvious that reducing your meat consumption will first and foremost be an act of compassion towards yourself. http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/evolved-primate/201005/empathy-is-what-reall… Here is the original study: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2877098/ More links at original link, too. added by: animalia_libero

Rupert Murdoch calls in Bill O’Reilly and "pollster" Frank Luntz to provide cover for yet another Palin misstep.

The first thing to address is whether or not Frank Luntz actually gathered a group of people that is representative of Obama voters. I am guessing not. And by the way WHY did they cut it off before the graph supposedly demonstrated how hateful the Obama voters were? The guy is well known for consistently skewing his data to reinforce the conclusions that Fox News pays him to reinforce. He is the guy who penned the memo that Republicans are using to try and kill the health care bill, and there is NOTHING bipartisan about his tactics. So let us get THAT out of the way right off the top. As I have addressed before the Family Guy episode was NOT aimed at Trig Palin. It contained one very slight dig at Sarah Palin, which SHE decided to capitalize on to, once again, play the victim. Only this time she was even too cowardly to do it herself, and had her daughter Bristol do the dirty work for her. Even the actress who played the part, a person with Down syndrome herself, understood the target of the joke . The only thing that is shown by this little act that Luntz and O’Reilly put on is that News Corp is still dedicated to cleaning up the messes that Sarah Palin makes in order to keep her from imploding before they have squeezed all of the potential revenue from of her appearances on Fox. After all Rupert Murdoch has made a sizable investment in Ms. Palin and, even though she is getting more batshit crazy by the day, he still stands to make a tidy sum from her in the next several months. Personally I want very much to be a fly on the wall at Fox News when we prove that Sarah did not give birth to her magical, popularity producing toddler. I wonder if MSNBC could sneak a camera in there on the big day? And as for Luntz’s ridiculous assertion that when it comes to Sarah Palin conservatives are more compassionate than liberals, I have to correct him. It is not that we are less compassionate, it is that we are less easy to fool. You see, unlike conservatives, when a woman puts a pillow under her scarf and tells us she is seven months pregnant and then produces a borrowed child to prove that she was not lying, liberals tend to be a tad skeptical. After all, as my previous post illustrates, we ARE the intelligent ones.

The world’s 18 strangest buildings—and why we love them

This July, the American Institute of Architects forecasted steep declines in nonresidential construction spending through 2010. Spending is projected to decrease by 16 percent this year and another 12 percent in 2010. With less money flowing through the industry, high-end design projects are likely to be scaled back; architects, builders and regular folk are opting for retrofits with more practical design.
