Pelosi says they’ve got the votes

After last week's fun-to-watch but little-accomplishing bipartisan health care summit, it seems the Democrats are just going to move forward without the GOP. The Administration is apparently in favor of having the House pass the Senate version of the bill – which would not require going back to face the possibility of a filibuster. And Nancy Pelosi says she's got the votes in the House to do it. The Republicans have demanded that the Democrats just scrap the whole thing and start over. That was after multiple entreaties from the Obama Administration to find compromise. So, the Dems will go it alone – despite the danger it poses for some of their embattled Congressional colleagues in the upcoming midterm elections. From the Washington Post: “As Democrats fanned out on television to bolster their party's prospects for passing health-care legislation, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said it will require “courage” from members of her party. “Why are we here? We're not here just to self-perpetuate our service in Congress,” she said on ABC's “This Week.” “We're here to do the job for the American people; to get them results that give them not only health security but economic security, because the health issue is an economic issue for America's families.” Link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/28/AR2010022803243…. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) will make his final offer on healthcare legislation on Saturday morning, unveiling a highly-anticipated amendment to the Senate healthcare bill. Reid will unveil his amendment with a cost analysis from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) shortly after the Senate votes at around 7:30 Saturday morning to clear a Defense spending bill. “That’s the plan, soon after that vote because we want to file cloture on that quickly,” said Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.).

Obama Presses Senate to Act Quickly on Its Health Bill

WASHINGTON — The White House, growing concerned that the Congressional timetable for passing a health care overhaul could slip into next year, is stepping up pressure on the Senate for quick action, with President Obama appearing Sunday in the Rose Garden to call on senators to “take up the baton and bring this effort to the finish line.” Mr. Obama’s remarks came just 14 hours after the House narrowly approved a landmark plan that would cost $1.1 trillion over 10 years and extend insurance coverage to 36 million uninsured Americans; the president called it “a courageous vote.” But the votes had barely been counted when the White House began turning its attention to an even bigger hurdle: getting legislation passed in the Senate. In the Senate, where proposals differ substantially from the House-passed measure on issues like a government-run plan and how to pay for coverage, the bill is stalled while budget analysts assess its overall costs
