Toy soldiers run afoul of school’s weapons ban

Christan Morales says her son just wanted to honor American troops when he wore a hat to school decorated with an American flag and small plastic Army figures. But the hat ran afoul of the district's no-weapons policy because the toy soldiers were carrying tiny weapons. “His teacher called and said it wasn't appropriate because it had guns,” Morales said. Morales' 8-year-old son, David, was assigned to make a hat for the day when his second-grade class would met their pen pals from another school. She and her son came up with an idea to add patriotic decorations to a camouflage hat. Earlier this week, the Tiogue School in Coventry sent the cap home with David at the end of the day after concluding it violated a zero-tolerance policy for weapons. The principal told the family that the hat would be fine if David replaced the Army men holding weapons with ones that didn't have any, according to Superintendent Kenneth R. Di Pietro. Morales said the family had only one Army figure without a weapon (he was carrying binoculars), so David wore a plain baseball cap on the day of the visit. “Nothing was being done to limit patriotism, creativity, other than find an alternative to a weapon,” Di Pietro said. The district does not allow images of weapons or drugs on clothing. For example, a student would not be permitted to wear a shirt with a picture of a marijuana leaf on it, the superintendent said. The principal “wasn't denying the patriotism,” he said. “That just is the wrong and unfair image of one of our finest principals.” Morales said her son was inspired to honor the military after striking up a friendship last summer with a neighbor in the Army. Banning the hat “sent the wrong message to the kids, because it wasn't in any way to cause any harm to anyone,” she said. “You're talking about Army men. This wasn't about guns.” http://www.optimum.net/News/AP/Article?fmId=5128267 added by: Stoneyroad

Don’t Feed The Troll

Trolls do zilch for me these days. This is because I'm jaded. Allow me to explain. I moderate a rather high-profile message board. This has been a pastime of mine for a few years now. Over the years, I have seen my share of trolls, and I've learned that the best way to deal with trolls is not to react to them. You see, the troll is an enigmatic creature. They could be just about anyone you imagine…your teacher, your mail carrier, your sibling, even one of your parents or grandparents. They could be fine, upstanding citizens, who simply like to say inflammatory things on the Internet just to get a rise out of people…(continued) added by: DoctorLulzington

San Francisco prepares to build its first space port

With a rocket ship about to land by the Bay, can Starfleet Headquarters be far behind? Help San Francisco build its first space port – and support the arts, too! The Black Rock Arts Foundation writes: The 40-foot-tall art piece, The Raygun Gothic Rocketship, offers rococo-futuristic, highly-stylized vision of space travel circa 1930's-1940's science fiction and is the latest in a series of temporary public art exhibitions sponsored by BRAF with the aim of enlivening and activating public spaces. The installation first landed at Burning Man 2009, and has subsequently appeared at NASA Ames for Yuri's Night, and at Maker Faire. The piece is comprised of a single rocketship, poised as if to board passengers for a typical run to a nearby stellar destination. When installed in San Francisco, the sculpture will be accompanied by a descriptive exhibit, a “rocket stop”, which tells the story of the rocketship, provides route, schedule and other information. The installation will be illuminated for nighttime viewing. We need your support!!! Want to donate to the arts, and help build a rocket stop where cosmonauts can grab some lunch before heading back to the stars? Coverage: BP CEO Tony Hayward going to Capitol Hill

Live coverage… WASHINGTON (AP)- BP's humbled CEO told Congress on Thursday he was “deeply sorry” for the company's catastrophic oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. But a House panel chairman accused him of being oblivious to the risks of the company's deepwater operations. Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., told a grim-faced BP executive Tony Hayward that in his committee's review of 30,000 items, there was “not a single e-mail or document that you paid even the slightest attention to the dangers at this well.” A day after agreeing to a $20 billion victims' compensation fund, Hayward told Congress in prepared testimony that he was “personally devastated” by the April explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig that triggered the giant spill — and that he understands the anger that Americans feel toward him and his company. added by: JanforGore
