Bob Glauber of Newsday reports the Jets are indeed willing to give Darrelle Revis the largest contract ever given to a defensive back suggesting they’re willing to go as high as $100 million . Revis has three years and about $21 million remaining on his current contract but is set to make just $1 million in 2010. Per Glauber, the Jets just don’t want to pay him “Asomugha money” — the deal the Raiders cornerback got which averages $16.2 million per year. What the Jets appear ready to do instead is add six years to the existing deal, a total package that, when added to the remaining $21 million Revis is owed would approach $100 million or more. That deal, which would average around $12 million per season, would keep Revis with the Jets until he is 33. For now, they don’t appear to be close on getting a deal done. Revis has publicly stated his desire to have a deal that is above Asomugha’s $16.2 million per year.

Iara Lee, a Brazilian-American filmmaker and activist who was shooting a documentary on the flotilla of ships that was intercepted last week on its way to Gaza, has posted one hour of unedited video online that shows the early stages of the Israeli commando raid. Ms. Lee’s raw video, posted on YouTube on Friday, gives viewers a chance to see the atmosphere on the main ship in the flotilla, the Mavi Marmara, just before and during the raid. The footage was shot over the course of more than one hour, as the camera was turned on and off a few times, but it shows long, uninterrupted stretches of the event. (Please be aware that the video contains graphic images of people who have been badly wounded and may have died.) Since the camera was on a lower deck of the ship, it also shows but does not give a clear view of the violent confrontation and shootings that took place on the top deck of the ship, after Israeli commandos boarded from a helicopter and met with resistance from passengers on board. But the video, and accompanying audio, will help give a better sense of the timeline of the raid. It also shows clearly the area of the ship where wounded and dying passengers — and soldiers — were brought for medical treatment. At a news conference at the United Nations on Thursday, where the video was screened for members of the media, Ms. Lee explained that she managed to smuggle out the video by hiding the card. She added that another video card she tried to hide was discovered and confiscated by Israeli authorities, along with her video equipment. Ethan McCord, one of the soldiers seen in the now-famous Wikileaks video in which two American Apache helicopters fire upon a relaxed, unhurried gaggle of men in Baghdad, has stated in an interview that he witnessed numerous times the indiscriminate slaughter of civilians in Iraq after IED attacks. McCord is on of the soldiers seen helping two wounded children after the attack. McCord said to reporter Bill Van Auken: “we had a pretty gung-ho commander, who decided that because we were getting hit by IEDs a lot, there would be a new battalion SOP [standard operating procedure]. He goes, “If someone in your line gets hit with an IED, 360 rotational fire. You kill every motherfucker on the street.” Myself and Josh and a lot of other soldiers were just sitting there looking at each other like, “Are you kidding me? You want us to kill women and children on the street?” And you couldn’t just disobey orders to shoot, because they could just make your life hell in Iraq. So like with myself, I would shoot up into the roof of a building instead of down on the ground toward civilians. But I’ve seen it many times, where people are just walking down the street and an IED goes off and the troops open fire and kill them.” He has stepped forward with open opposition to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and written a letter of apology for his part in the incident to the mother of the children, who has accepted his apology. It's official: the expansion of hydro-fracking operations is creating the biggest natural gas boom in US history… the film GASLAND explores this controversial method of extracting gas. Oil and gas companies are going to start hydro-fracking operations to drill for gas in NY this year if the state's Dept of Environmental Conservation (DEC) approves the permits. The DEC needs to do the right thing: wait until the Environmental Protection Agency finishes a national study on the environmental impact of hydro-fracking in the next year or two. Hydro-fracking, despite polluting the groundwater in many documented cases across the US, isn't currently regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act. This loophole is unacceptable — and corrupt. It's known as the “Halliburton Loophole” because Dick Cheney (former Vice President and former CEO of Halliburton) requested the inclusion of the provision in the Energy Policy Act of 2005. “The Energy Policy Act of 2005 exempted hydraulic fracturing from federal regulation under the Safe Drinking Water Act. Reports of ground water contamination have questioned whether the exemption is appropriate. A complete listing of the specific chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing operations are not currently made available to landowners, neighbors, local officials, or health care providers.” “The FRAC Act, introduced in June 2009, would eliminate the exemption and would require the disclosure of chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing.” (wikipedia) Why are companies being allowed to push ahead with this dirty, dangerous form of drilling? Venice, Louisiana (CNN) — Crews cleaning up the oil in one Louisiana parish have trampled the nests and eggs of birds including the brown pelican, which came off the endangered species list last year, the head of the parish said Wednesday. Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser said the parish doesn't want to turn away contractors, but he called for more care when crews work in the sensitive wetlands. He said officials recently found broken eggs and crushed chicks on Queen Bess Island, near Grand Isle. Plastic bags containing snare boom were “recklessly placed” around the island without consideration for wildlife. In one picture released by the parish, a plastic bag was on top of a nest containing broken speckled eggs. Dozens of people, including experienced veterinarians, have been going to the area from all over the country to help with the affected wildlife, the parish said. Nungesser met with the Humane Society of the United States and asked it to work with contractors who are cleaning the birds to come up with a better way to enlist the help of volunteers, the parish said. “We want to improve our comfort level of knowing someone is out there looking for these birds and other animals — doing all they can to save them,” Nungesser said on the parish website. “The people BP sent out to clean up oil trampled the nesting grounds of brown pelicans and other birds,” he said. “Pelicans just came off the endangered species list in November of last year. They already have the oil affecting their population during their reproduction time, now we have the so-called clean up crews stomping eggs. “The lack of urgency and general disregard for Louisiana's wetlands and wildlife is enough to make you sick,” he said. added by: EthicalVegan
