NFL Gets First Full Time Female Coach Big strides were made in the sports world today , as the first woman was placed in a full-time coaching position with the Buffalo Bills. Via CBSnews : A New York state sports team made history on Wednesday. As CBS2’s Steve Overmyer reported, the NFL coaching fraternity has officially crossed gender lines. The Buffalo Bills hired the NFL’s first female, full-time coach. Kathryn Smith will be the Bills’ special teams quality control coach. Smith spent twelve seasons in the Jets organization before following Rex Ryan to Buffalo. “She certainly deserves this promotion based on her knowledge and strong commitment,” Ryan said in a statement. CBS affiliate WIVB-TV, Buffalo reported Smith started her career as an intern with the Jets before spending time as a player personnel assistant, and assistant to the head coach. The move comes as part of a new wave of gender progress in men’s professional sports. Just months ago the Arizona Cardinals hired Jen Welter as a temp coach in the off-season. In the NBA the Spurs hired Becky Hammon as their assistant. Smith’s position is considered an apprenticeship to becoming a head coach. Nice! Good for her getting this groundbreaking role… Twitter

Why can’t they let Mike be great? Fans Launch Petition To Block Mike Vick From Jets’ Training Camp Hasn’t the man paid his debt to society? At some point you have to let things go. According to NY Post: The Jets’ signing of quarterback Michael Vick remains unpopular with certain segments of their fan base and now a petition has started online in an attempt to keep him off SUNY Cortland’s campus this summer when the Jets hold training camp there. The change.org petition had over 2,000 signatures as of Monday night. The petition is addressed to SUNY Cortland president Erik J. Bitterbaum. It addresses Vick’s crimes. The 33-year-old served nearly two years in prison after pleading guilty to crimes related to a dogfighting ring. “Vick has served a short sentence for bankrolling a dogfighting conspiracy, but animal cruelty charges were dropped in return for his guilty plea,” the petition reads. “This does not mean, however, that his crimes should be forgotten.” The petition details some of the specific charges against Vick and also includes a photo of an abused dog next to one of Vick. “If we welcome Vick onto our campus, we are complicit in his crimes,” the petition reads. “We are sending the message that, for money and publicity, we will turn a blind eye to the horrors of dogfighting.” The Jets signed Vick to a one-year contract last month. He is expected to compete with Geno Smith for the starting quarterback job. Vick played for the Eagles from 2009-13 after being released from prison. Tim Tebow Released By New York Jets

The Tim Tebow era is over in New York. Following a tumultuous season that saw him make far more noise off the field than on, this former Heisman Trophy winner has been released by the Jets. “We have a great deal of respect for Tim Tebow,” coach Rex Ryan said. “Unfortunately, things did not work out the way we all had hoped.” “Tim is an extremely hard worker, evident by the shape he came back in this offseason. We wish him the best moving forward.” The Jets took Geno Smith in the second round of the NFL Draft Friday, clearing the way for some kind of quarterback move. Tebow finished the 2012 campaign with eight pass attempts, six completions, 32 rushes for 102 yards and zero touchdowns. As for Tebow’s future? It may be in the Arena League . It may be on the big screen . But it will most definitely not be as a member of the Jets, an organization in complete disarray heading into the 2013 season. And for that, Tebow should truly give thanks. He really may be blessed after all.

Angry Fan Tweets Mark Sanchez Death Threats & Racial Slurs What was this guy thinking??? Via Chicago-Sun Times: New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has received multiple death threats and a racist comment from one individual via Twitter, which led to the NFL contacting the team. Someone with the Twitter handle @BraveGrancru has tweeted racist and threatening comments. The tweets began during the Jets’ 14-10 loss to the Titans on Sunday. Sanchez threw four interceptions and fumbled to all but close out the game for the Jets. According to @BraveGrancru’s Twitter timeline, which is still active, he has received multiple calls from media outlets regarding this matter.
