Adele Back At #1 On Billboard

Punkers Rise Against crash the boards at #2, while Travis Barker bows at #9. By Gil Kaufman Adele Photo: Jon Furniss/ WireImage Adele will retake the #1 position on the Billboard 200 next week after dropping down to the #2 slot last week. Sales of Adele’s 21 album were down 26 percent, but it still manages to retake the top thanks to 98,000 units moved, pushing the British R&B smoothie over the 750,000 mark after four weeks, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. That was enough to keep veteran punks Rise Against down at #2 with the debut of their latest, Endgame, which sold 85,000 copies to edge out last week’s #1, Lupe Fiasco ‘s Lasers, which sits at #3 on sales of 47,000 as sales dropped by 77 percent. The only other debut in the top 10 comes from Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker , whose all-solo bow, Give the Drummer Some, lands at #9 (28,000). The rest of the top 10: Glee: The Music, Volume 5 (#4, 43,000), Mumford & Sons , Sigh No More (#5, 41,000), Justin Bieber , Never Say Never – The Remixes (#6, 34,000), Avril Lavigne , Goodbye Lullaby (#7, 32,000), NOW 37 (#8, 30,000) and Marsha Ambrosius , Late Nights & Early Mornings (#10, 28,000). It was a short trip to the top 10 for veterans R.E.M. , whose Collapse Into Now slips 16 slots to #21 in its second week as sales dropped by 67 percent to 19,000. But apparently an appearance on “American Idol” last week was enough to boost the sales of the Black Eyed Peas’ slow-moving The Beginning, which jumps 16 places to #28 as sales were up 24 percent to 13,000, putting them just short of 600,000 in four months. The show even helped goose the sales for last season’s “Idol” winner, Lee DeWyze , whose dead-on-arrival debut, Live It Up, re-enters the top 200 after falling off the charts for six weeks. DeWyze, who also performed on “Idol” last week, quadrupled his weekly sales totals to 5,000, racing back into the top 200 at #96 and pushing the disc closer to 130,000 in total sales, the worst showing yet by an “Idol” winner. “iCarly” star Miranda Cosgrove’s second album, High Maintenance, comes in at #34 (11,000), while sales for a 10th anniversary “Idol” hits compilation were tepid, as the disc limps in at #136 with nearly 4,000 units shifted. Over on the iTunes albums chart, Rise Against take the top spot, followed by Adele, Fiasco, Mumford, the “Glee” compilation, Barker, Rihanna ‘s Loud, Bieber’s My World 2.0, Lavigne and Ambrosius. The iTunes singles chart belongs to Katy Perry ‘s collabo with Kanye West , “E.T.,” which edges out the first original “Glee” single, “Loser Like Me,” and the Black Eyed Peas’ “Just Can’t Get Enough.” The rest of the iTunes top 10 singles: Rihanna, “S&M”; the “Glee” cast, “Get It Right”; Lady Gaga , “Born This Way”; Chris Brown , “Look at Me Now”; Jennifer Lopez , “On the Floor”; Cee Lo Green , “Forget You” and Ke$ha , “Blow.” Next week should see a serious shuffling at the top, as stores will be stocking Jennifer Hudson’s second album, I Remember Me, as well as the first new disc in five years from the Strokes, Angles, and, fresh off a controversial window-bashing TV appearance, Chris Brown’s F.A.M.E. ‘American Idol’ Winner Lee DeWyze’s Debut Due November 16

‘I’m really proud of what I’ve done so far,’ he tells MTV News of yet-untitled album. By By Gil Kaufman, with additional reporting by James Lacsina Lee DeWyze Photo: MTV News The major-label debut from season-nine “American Idol” winner Lee DeWyze will be released November 16. So far, that’s about all we know about the yet-untitled CD from the suburban Chicago singer/songwriter, who beat out dreadlocked soul mama Crystal Bowersox for this season’s crown thanks to an all-American story about his rise from humble paint-store clerk to household name. The soft-spoken DeWyze, 24, has been writing and recording songs for the album while logging miles on this summer’s American Idols Live! Tour and said in a statement accompanying the announcement of the release date that he’s been “very fortunate” to record with some amazing songwriters for the disc. “I can’t wait for everyone to hear my debut album.” Technically, it’s his third album , but it’s his major-label debut, since he released two previous efforts on the small Chicago label WuLi Records: 2009’s Slumberland and 2007’s So I’m Told. On those discs, he honed the everyman, sensitive growl that helped him win “Idol,” where his slow and steady rise and humble demeanor catapulted him past season-long favorite Bowersox. MTV News recently caught up with DeWyze at the Los Angeles stop of the “Idol” tour and he spilled a bit of detail on the songs he’s been working on and the sound fans can expect to hear. “I’ve written on every song. … I’m more or less looking forward to showing everybody what I do outside of the show and outside of this. To be able to be my own artist and do my own thing, I’m really looking forward to.” He said he couldn’t talk about which artists and songwriters he’s working with but hinted that they were ones he’s listened to and is a fan of. “What’s really most important about the album for me is keeping it true to what I want to do and the kind of music I like to make and having it be real, not just some words thrown together,” he said. “I like to write about love and relationships and emotions and feeling … being down and up. I like writing about things that everybody experiences and to be able to put that into my music … it’s going to be fun.” As if the grueling “Idol” tour isn’t hard enough, DeWyze said he’s flying in and out of New York, Los Angeles and Nashville on his days off to write and record the songs. “I have a lot of say in it,” he said of crafting the sound and mood of the disc. “I have a lot more say than people would think. It’s going to be really good. I’m really proud of what I’ve done so far.” Though there’s no official title yet, DeWyze said he has a few strong contenders. “These are things I dreamt about doing years ago,” he said of working on a major-label album. “To be able to actually do it now is pretty cool.” There has been no word yet on the release date of Bowersox’s album, though the runner-up’s disc has typically hit stores a few weeks after the winner’s effort. Eminem Enlists Sham Wow Guy For Recovery Ad

Video features pitchman Vince demonstrating the many uses of the disc, out June 21. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: Nigel Parry Now that Eminem has pushed up the release date of Recovery by a day to June 21 (following the album’s leak last week), the Detroit rapper is pulling out the big guns to promote the disc. In a new video ad called “Emwow” that looks calculated to go viral, Vince the ShamWow guy sets aside the miracle sponge for 30 seconds to sell you about the slice-it, dice-it wonders of the new Marshall Mathers disc. Wearing a black polo embroidered with the Recovery title and his signature headset, Vinny holds up the disc and announces, “Hey, it’s Vince with Eminem’s new album, Recovery, and you’re gonna be clappin’ when you hear Eminem rappin’.” He then demonstrates the “dozens of uses” for the disc, including slicing razor-thin tomatoes for your sandwich, serving as a drink coaster, a necklace for the ladies or even as bling for your garden hose (get it?). He even suggests cutting the disc in half (an unusual selling point for a CD, but we’ll go with it) and using one part to slice cheese and the other to chop onions. “Tacos, steak bone, silicone,” Vince demonstrates, tossing aside a breast implant and oversharing, “I like mine real, so forget about it.” This being Eminem, the ad ends with some bathroom humor, as Vince announces a special bonus product thrown in for free, a feminine-hygiene product called the ShamPon. The rapper surprised his fans at Activision’s E3 party on Monday night in Los Angeles, bringing out guests Travis Barker and Rihanna to help him celebrate the upcoming release. A spokesperson for Em’s label said the album, which features guest spots from Pink and Lil Wayne in addition to Rihanna, will hit stores a day earlier than expected to satisfy the rapper’s biggest supporters. “We believe fans want to support their favorite artists by purchasing the real album and not a leaked version,” Steve Berman, vice-chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M, said in a press release announcing the new date. “At the same time, we realize speed is of the essence when fans are so passionate about wanting to hear new songs from such an enormously popular artist like Eminem. … Even by releasing Recovery only a day earlier than previously announced, it makes a difference to those fans.” What do you think of the “Emwow” ad? Does it make you more likely to buy the new disc? Sound off in the comments. Related Photos The Evolution Of: Eminem Related Artists Eminem

U2 Postpone 360 Tour As Bono Recovers From Back Surgery

Frontman ordered to recuperate for at least eight weeks, pushing 16 North American tour dates to 2011. By Gil Kaufman U2’s Bono Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage The good news is that after Friday’s successful emergency back surgery, U2 singer Bono was discharged from Ludwig Maximilians-University Hospital in Munich on Monday. The bad news is that in order to recover fully, the 50-year-old singer (born Paul Hewson) is under doctor’s orders to start a rehabilitation and recuperation program that will keep him sidelined for at least eight weeks, forcing the postponement of the band’s 16 North American 360 Tour dates until 2011. According to a statement from tour producer Live Nation, the concerts, which were to kick off in Salt Lake City on June 3 and run through a July 19 show at New Jersey’s Meadowlands Stadium, have been pushed to an unspecified date next year. “Bono suffered severe compression of the sciatic nerve,” explained Dr. Muller Wohlfahrt, one of the singer’s doctors. “On review of his MRI scan, I realized there was a serious tear in the ligament and a herniated disc, and that conservative treatment would not suffice. I recommended Bono have emergency spine surgery.” The surgeon who performed the procedure, Professor Joerg Christian Tonn added, “Bono was referred to me by Dr. Muller Wohlfahrt late last week with a sudden onset disease. He was already in severe pain with partial paralysis in the lower leg. The ligament surrounding the disc had an 8mm tear and during surgery we discovered fragments of the disc had traveled into the spinal canal.
