Clip of Stump singing five songs nominated for Record of the Year has become a sensation. By James Montgomery Patrick Stump performs on YouTube Photo: Patrick Stump/ YouTube Earlier this week, Patrick Stump continued his slow march toward social-media proficiency (he even writes his own tweets now!) when he released a brand-new video of himself doing a cappella versions of the five songs nominated for Record of the Year at the Grammys. In the days since its premiere, the clip has become a sensation, something that has as much to do with his genuinely great vocal chops (and oddly mesmerizing bow tie) as it does with the fact that it’s not exactly clear why he decided to make the video in the first place. So we asked him. And as it turns out, Stump — who’s gearing up for the release of his solo debut, Soul Punk — never intended for the video to be made public, until he received some advice to the contrary. “I guess I decided to do the a cappella thing ’cause I’ve been put down as a musician a few times as ‘just a singer,’ and I wanted to kind of see how much [of] a musician I could be with just my voice,” Stump wrote in an e-mail to MTV News. “Choosing to sing the Grammy nominees started because ‘Nothin’ on You’ was in my head for a week, then ‘Empire State of Mind,’ and I’d seen they were both nominated. The whole thing just kind of came together naturally. I recorded it right around the time they were announced, I showed it to some friends and they were like, ‘Post this!’ ” So he did. Stump said that he’s been blown away by the reaction his a cappella clip has received, though that doesn’t mean he’s not above nitpicking. Not about the music, mind you: No, most of his criticisms have to do with his wardrobe decisions. “It’s just been one of those happy little unplanned pleasant surprises,” he wrote. “I should’ve worn a different shirt with that bow tie, though.” Related Artists Patrick Stump

OM Glee , you guys. In two short weeks, Glee will return to the airwaves with its much-anticipated second season and bring with it a whole new slew of Glee gasms (and other Glee -related wordplay). An earlier promo teased a couple of upcoming moments — like the cast singing “Empire State of Mind” while dancing with choreography straight out of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off — but this new clip from the season premiere offers fans a chance to see something previously un seen: Jane Lynch saddled with subpar material.

She announced last month that she is pregnant and engaged to Swizz Beatz, but Alicia Keys is showing no signs of slowing down just yet. The singer performed her mega-hit “Empire State of Mind” and more for Good Morning America ‘s Summer Concert Series in NYC Friday. Is that the first traces of a baby bump we see? Baby bump or not, Alicia Keys looks terrific! This is the first child for Keys, 29, and it will be her first marriage. Swizz Beatz, 31, who has dated her for years, has two sons from previous relationships. Good timing, too: Keys’ four-month-long Freedom Tour wrapped up June 4 and she recently performed at the World Cup kickoff concert in South Africa.

A Michael Jackson tribute is also confirmed for the awards show, airing live June 27. By Mawuse Ziegbe Eminem Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Eminem , Usher , Alicia Keys and T-Pain have been added to the performance lineup of the BET Awards ’10 , going down on June 27 in Los Angeles. The hitmakers will join a star-studded bill that includes previously announced performers Kanye West, Drake, T.I., Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross and Ludacris. A BET rep also confirmed that a Michael Jackson tribute is slated for this year’s show, hosted by rapper/actor Queen Latifah. The 2009 event became an impromptu MJ homage after the icon died just days before the awards show aired. Host Jamie Foxx memorably Moonwalked and spoofed Jackson’s “Beat It,” and stars like Ne-Yo, Ciara and Keri Hilson paid homage to the icon during their performances. Rolling Stone reported on Thursday (June 17) that BET insiders confirmed viewers can expect a performance of the monster collaboration “All I Do Is Win,” featuring DJ Khaled, T-Pain, Ludacris and Rick Ross. The magazine also teased that the “All I Do Is Win” collabo is set to feature a special guest. Jay-Z leads this year’s BET Awards nominations with five nods, including Best Male Hip-Hop Artist and Video of the Year for both “Empire State of Mind” and “Run this Town” off his hit The Blueprint 3. Filed under: Videos , Music When Starship ‘s smash hit ‘ We Built This City ‘ came out in 1985, the traffic report and DJ banter heard during the bridge of the song were edited out, encouraging local radio stations to insert their own customized content into the song itself. And you thought ‘ Empire State of Mind ‘ was innovative. Starship was doing user generated content before you were born. Fast forward 25 years. Sioux City radio personalities, firefighters and hometown folks have come together to create a shakily edited lipdub that oozes low-budget dorky whiteness. Share Continue reading
After dropping ‘California Gurls’ on Monday, the pop singer stakes a claim on the summer. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ WireImage Katy Perry has established that she’s Maxim ‘s idea of a dream come true, and now the pop singer is preparing to deliver the Teenage Dream to the world on August 24. Having already released the upcoming album’s lead single, “California Gurls,” as snippets of other possible tracks for the album have been leaking online, Perry is staking claim on summer of 2010. After Jay-Z got the party started all across the country with his track, “Empire State of Mind,” last year, Perry was inspired to write “California Gurls” for her side of the country. “Everybody was holding their drinks in the air and dancing, and I thought, ‘We’re not in New York, we’re in Los Angeles! What about California? What about all the homies, the gin and juice, the swaying palm trees, the sun-kissed skin 24-7,’ ” Perry said in a statement. “I decided that we needed to make a response. I want people to want to book a ticket to California the first time they hear it!” And to that end, she knew she had to get Snoop Dogg onboard for the track. “We thought it would sound so cool and give the song another dimension,” she explained. “Snoop is as West Coast as it gets.” Hitmaker Dr. Luke has been tweeting about the process of making Perry’s “big record” (while also posting funny cat videos, perhaps to confuse would-be leakers). And Perry tweeted about the video shoot for the single on Monday, writing, “Saw the most drool worthy cali gurls @the dance auditions for the Music Video! Ready 2 melt all popsicles around the world. #californiagurls.” Are you excited for Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream ? Discuss in the comments!

Nothing says mainstream romantic comedy like the use of a past sell date pop song in the trailer. And since The Back-Up Plan has already co-opted Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok” and Percy Jackson (yes, that Percy Jackson ) has laid claim to Lady Gaga, what other song but “Empire State of Mind” could the trailer for Sex and the City 2 use to underscore all its glittery insanity and cast sojourn to Abu Dhabi? Yep, Abu Dhabi…
