Given the behind the scenes false starts that seemed to plague the production of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – lawsuits, studio bankruptcy, a change in directors — it’s perhaps a tad ironic that beginning the story of Lord of the Rings before the story of Lord of the Rings was never a problem. No, for Peter Jackson , Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, the power troika behind the flick, beginning an episodic, rollicking, children’s adventure story cum three-film epic was the easy part. Deciding where to end, however… Spoilers follow. How does one pinpoint a climax for a first film in a trilogy before the whole story is even a third of the way over? With what may be the turning point of J.R.R. Tolkien’s entire massive legendarium, suggested Boyens. “We understood that you had to arrive the characters at an emotional location as opposed to a geographical location. Instead of just getting them to a geographical point on the journey, it was more important for to arrive them at an emotional place so that you didn’t continue to tell the same emotional story,” the Oscar winning scribe told Movieline . “It’s very hard for Bilbo to be that little Hobbit who has to find his courage,” she continued. “I mean, that could go on and on and on and on. [But when] the ring comes to Bilbo and in that moment he chooses not to take Gollum’s life, that has enormous resonance for the entire mythology.” Occurring almost exactly 30 percent of the way through Tolkien’s The Hobbit , the scene comes immediately after Bilbo finds the One Ring and puts it on for the first time in order to escape from the clutches of the treacherous Gollum, who he has just beaten in a Riddle Game. Perched before Gollum in front of an open doorway that promises freedom, Bilbo has a chance to kill the creature but chooses not to. The scene, sometimes referred to by fans of the series as “The Pity of Bilbo,” has consequences for the rest of the series in a literal sense, as it is ultimately Gollum who manages to destroy the Ring by falling with it into the lava at Mount Doom. So resonant is the scene, in fact, that it’s overtly referenced several times in Lord of the Rings . “The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many,” Gandalf tells Frodo in Fellowship of the Ring . “The pity of Bilbo rules the fate of all,” echoed director Peter Jackson. “Bilbo had a chance to kill Gollum. The fact that he didn’t [kill Gollum] has now created the story of Lord of the Rings , for good or for bad.” Perhaps more importantly for Boyens and Company, it represented a kind of ecclesiastical or moral totem, a crossroads from which Bilbo would never be able to return. (Gandalf believes, for example, that Bilbo was able to give up the Ring so easily because he took it in a moment of pity. “Bilbo has been well rewarded,” he tells Frodo. “Be sure that he took so little hurt from the evil, and escaped in the end, because he began his ownership of the Ring so. With pity.”) Using this scene as the climax of the film then necessitated moving other things forward, like when in the story Thorin learns to trust and lean on Bilbo. From the cave scene forward in the film, Bilbo takes agency in his relationship with the dwarves, deciding to actively join them on their quest and helping to save Thorin from the orcs. “Bilbo discovers something in himself and I think that is true courage, knowing when, as Gandalf says, to spare a life,” Boyens insisted. “So we couldn’t just let that moment pass. And I think it would have gotten buried in the great morass of spider fights and other stuff that would have happened if [we didn’t end there and] kept pushing through.” The spiritual ramifications of the scene were so important to the screenwriters that they made a small but profound change in order to underline its moral importance, explained Boyens. In the book, Bilbo simply finds the Ring, as if it was misplaced by Gollum. In the movie, “[Gollum] loses it as he’s murdering someone and Bilbo receives it as he’s saving something,” Boyens explained. “So maybe that act – that unknown act without any knowledge of any greater consequence — is what Professor Tolkien wrote a lot about; [Goodness and grace] must be innate. It must be for its sake an act of charity, an act of kindness. That’s how fate works.” Is this the right place to end The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey , even though it necessitated changing the text to move other things forward? Would you have chosen this spot? Golden Globe-nominated actress also opens up about when she might be looking for her next movie role. By Christina Garibaldi Shailene Woodley Photo: MTV News Shailene Woodley has certainly been living a dream for the past few months. For her role in “The Descendents,” the young star not only got to play opposite George Clooney, but she was nominated for a Golden Globe and won an Independent Spirit Award. Not bad for her first movie role. And even though Woodley has had a few weeks to recover, she revealed she is still in awe of all the glitz and glamour that went into attending the big events. “Every single night you’d be at a different venue, every day you’d be at some fancy brunch, lunch or something and you’d be there and there’d be different lamp shades, different curtains, but you’d be sitting at the same table with the same exact people.” Woodley told MTV News. “So it was kind of great and you get to know everyone. It became a little family that migrated to different areas.” Woodley is now gearing up for the fourth season of her hit ABC Family series, “The Secret Life of the American Teenager.” Last season left off with Woodley’s character, Amy, accepting the proposal of her boyfriend and baby’s father, Ricky. Woodley admits that the couple will face some unexpected challenges as they deal with domestic life. “There’s a lot of ups and down,” Woodley said. “I mean, she’s living with Ricky full time, so I think anybody who is confined to a small space, there might be some disputes, they might be a little bit tormented by each other for a while. And they have a 2-year-old son, so I think just the drama and the hardships of raising a child at any age, but specifically as a 17- and 18-year-old, there’s a lot of difficulty in that, but they find a way to make it through it.” Will the newly engaged couple find themselves walking down the aisle soon? “I think definitely in the future. I don’t know about this season, they are in the future,” Woodley said. “There’s a lot of pressure on Amy coming from Ricky and her family as well to get married and to set a date. And for Amy, she really likes having the ring on her finger, I think for her it was a control thing. … She’s really in no rush to move on to anything big.” And it seems Woodley is in no rush to move on to her next movie role. The young actress is patiently waiting for the right script to come along. “I would love to do another movie, but until I read something I’m necessarily super passionate about I’m not going to jump in the wave and do a movie now,” Woodley said. “But I’d rather do a small, small role in an amazing movie than a big role in a not so great movie.” Are you excited for the season premiere of “Secret Life”? ‘I think a lot of your fate rides on what sort of light [the judges] shed on you,’ latest castoff tells MTV News. By Christina Garibaldi Photo: FOX “American Idol” fans might still be scratching their heads as to why Erika Van Pelt was sent home on last week’s episode. With a brand-new makeover , the singer took on Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind” and received mostly positive feedback from the judges, so when she was eliminated, it not only shocked fans, but Van Pelt as well. “I’ve been in the bottom [for] four consecutive weeks. I wasn’t surprised at that. Getting eliminated, I felt a little robbed, I can’t lie,” she told MTV News on Monday (March 26). “Everything happens for a reason.” Looking back at her time on “Idol,” Van Pelt said she felt “confused” by the judges’ remarks , especially for her latest performance, and feels that their changing critiques may have swayed voters. “I think a lot of your fate rides on what sort of light [the judges] shed on you,” Van Pelt said. “For me, I was doing ‘New York State of Mind,’ which is a ballad, and every time Billy Joel has ever performed it, he’s been sitting behind a piano, he’s not dancing around, and [Jennifer Lopez] made some comments about me planting my feet. I just wasn’t feeling it. I don’t feel like I need to jump around to sing. There are a few other contestants on the show that do nothing but stand there and sing, and they don’t say anything to them. [At] the very least, they get standing O’s, and they like that. I just felt it was a constant struggle for me.” Yet Van Pelt doesn’t feel like she was the only contestant receiving contradicting feedback week after week. “There are a lot of really great performers,” Van Pelt said. “Even my personal favorites have gotten some really sort of questionable feedback. I thought their performances were great, and they’d get slammed by the judges. It’s a weird thing. I feel like you never really know.” This summer, Van Pelt will join the other top 10 contestants on tour, where she said she will finally be able to show fans who she really is. “I felt like I was kind of kept in a box a little bit,” Van Pelt said of her time on “Idol.” “It’s just reality, just the structure of the show didn’t allow me to show who I really am as an artist. I have a lot of facets, and I’ve felt like they may have pegged me as this one thing and pushed me in that one direction, but I got a lot going on.” Were you surprised Erika was eliminated? It’s tough to be a comet. You spend most of the time — billions of years, really — out in deep space where it’s cold and dark. Of course, since you’re mostly made of ice, that’s not so bad. After all, the Sun is hot, and if you venture too close… Well, you know what happens then. And such was the fate of Comet SWAN, discovered just a few days ago as it plunged headlong into the seething fires of the… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : DiscoverMagazine Discovery Date : 16/03/2012 05:32 Number of articles : 3
