Emily Maynard Remembers Ricky Hendrick on Death Anniversary

Emily Maynard’s fiance, Ricky Hendrick, died in a tragic plane crash in 2004. Tuesday, on the anniversary of his death, The Bachelorette star tweeted a Bible verse as a poignant reminder that he is still present in her life and her daughter Ricki’s. Emily Maynard wrote, citing 1 Corinthians 2:9 … “However, as it is written: ‘What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived – the things God has prepared for those who love him.'” She also linked to the the above photo collage. “Perhaps they are not stars in the sky, but rather openings where our loved ones shine down to let us know they are happy,” she captioned the touching image above. Emily, of course, has found love (and reality stardom) twice in the years since – although things didn’t work out with Brad Womack or Jef Holm in the end. Still, the two were spotted together in Charlotte, N.C., last weekend, so perhaps there’s hope of a reconciliation? Only time will tell if it was more than a one-shot deal. Either way, Ricky will always be there for Ricki, and Emily.

New Fern Species Named For Lady Gaga

Botanists at Duke University have honored Lady Gaga by naming a new genus of ferns – consisting of an impressive 19 species – after the eclectic pop superstar. Check out the resemblance! What gave Duke the idea to do this? “We wanted to name this genus for Lady Gaga because of her fervent defense of equality and individual expression,” said Kathleen Pryer, Duke Professor of Biology. “And as we started to consider it, the ferns themselves gave us more reasons why.” At one stage of its life, the new genus Gaga has “somewhat fluid definitions of gender.” Maybe those Lady Gaga hermaphrodite theorists are onto something! Also, the ferns bear a distinct DNA sequence that spells out … GAGA. Names of the new ferns include Gaga germanotta – a nod to the artist’s real name, Stefani Germanotta – and Gaga monstraparva , which translates to “monster little.” Little Monsters. So good. The Gaga genus of ferns can be found in Central and South America, Mexico, Arizona and Texas. Keep your eye out for the wild Gaga in her natural habitat!

Steve Honig, Lindsay Lohan Publicist, Quits

Lindsay Lohan’s maligned publicist Steve Honig has called it quits amid one public relations disaster after another from the downwardly spiraling starlet. “He’s resigned as Lindsay’s publicist Wednesday night,” a source tells E! News. Honig, however, declined to elaborate on why he’s decided throw in the towel. “I’m not discussing this out of respect for my client,” he said of his ex-client. Employed by LiLo for a year and a half, Honig has earned every penny. Under his watch, Lindsay Lohan … … headed down the path to financial ruin … passed out in a hotel room at least once … had 911 called on her numerous times … landed in the hospital after a frightening car crash … was arrested as part of a small-time jewelry heist … was banned from a hotel for unpaid bills … got arrested for an alleged hit-and-run … got into an epic fight with Dina Lohan … staved off a Michael Lohan intervention Good luck, Steve Honig replacement. You’ll need it.

GM maize farmers face ruin in South Africa

Monsanto and its supporters are forever promoting the idea that GM crop adoption is the way to greater farm productivity and profitability, but the experience of farmers growing GM maize in South Africa point to a far more complex and disturbing reality. Just a year ago all the talk was of South African farmers suffering millions of dollars in lost income after some 82,000 hectares of genetically-manipulated maize failed to produce seeds. And Monsanto was left rushing to compensate the farmers in an effort to hush up the disaster. http://www.foodfirst.org/en/node/2504 A year on and nearly a third of South Africa's maize farmers are again threatened with financial ruin – this time because of a glut in maize production. The knock on effects of the current crisis on rural South African communities could be catastrophic, reports the African Centre for Biosafety in a new report. Download the report here: http://www.biosafetyafrica.net/index.html/images/stories/dmdocuments/SA_GM_farme… — — The dirty politics of the global grain trade – GM maize farmers face ruin in SA Biosafety in South Africa – Briefing Papers http://www.biosafetyafrica.net/index.html/index.php/20100908332/The-dirty-politi… Recently, the South African press reported on the possible bankruptcy faced by maize farmers. The African Centre for Biosafety (ACB) has today released a new report titled “The dirty politics of the global grain trade – GM maize farmers face ruin in SA,” which provides an analysis of why South Africa's record 13 million ton harvest of maize, at least half of which is GM, has threatened financial ruin for up to 30% of its maize farmers. The paper addresses the following issues: the political economy of maize in South Africa; new GM markets for South Africa; the real beneficiaries of the maize mountains; and regulatory issues, including the extent to which South Africa's GMO permit system contributes towards speculation in the GM maize trade and the price of food. The paper can be found on the website of the ACB at www.biosafetyafrica.org.za South Africa's maize farmers recorded a bumper harvest in 2010, yet now they face ruin. The price of maize has fallen precipitously in the last 12 months owing to a crisis of over-production of both GM and non-GM maize. A mass exodus from the maize sector is anticipated, with as many as 30% of farmers facing potential liquidation. continued. added by: JanforGore
