Guinness World Records Responds To Jack White’s ‘Elitist’ Claims

Guinness spokesperson explains why they refused to recognize a White Stripes show as ‘the shortest concert of all time.’ By James Montgomery Jack White Photo: WireImage Over the years, Jack White has taken umbrage with overzealous radio programmers , the Internet and, uh, Jason Stollsteimer (to name just a few) but in the new issue of Interview magazine, he lashes out at a new foe: The folks at Guinness World Records. Yes, in what could only be described as the latest step in his ongoing transformation into the music world’s foremost eccentric — sorry, Kanye — White has lashed out at the venerable record-keeping institution, calling them “a very elitist organization” after they refused to acknowledge the White Stripes’ one-note performance in Newfoundland (seen in their 2010 doc “Under Great White Northern Lights” ) as “the shortest music concert ever.” “I was thinking that afterwards we could contact the Guinness World Records people and see if we could get the record for the shortest concert of all time. So we did it, but ultimately, they turned us down,” White tells astronaut Buzz Aldrin (for real) in the Interview piece. “[They’re] a very elitist organization. There’s nothing scientific about what they do. They just have an office full of people who decide what is a record and what isn’t … so something like the shortest concert of all time, they didn’t think [it] was interesting enough to make it a record. I don’t know why they get to decide that, but, you know, they own the book.” Well, yes, they do own the book … and, as it turns out, the Stripes’ Newfoundland concert was featured in the 2009 edition of it, as a spokesperson for Guinness World Records pointed out to MTV News on Thursday (May 17). Of course, they’d subsequently remove the notation in later editions, though it had little to do with elitism and more to do with the simple fact that Guinness had no way of qualifying what actually counted as a performance. “We received a large volume of applications from bands and performers seeking to beat this record. We got an influx of individuals claiming that simply appearing on stage was enough to qualify them for this record,” the spokesperson wrote in an email to MTV News. “It became increasingly difficult for us to measure this objectively (for example, how many members of the crowd need to be able to see the performer before they disappear off stage?) “The nature of competing to make something the ‘shortest’ by its very nature trivializes the activity being carried out, and Guinness World Records has been forced to reject many claims of this kind,” the spokesperson continued. “As such, we have closed record categories for similar designations such as the shortest song, shortest poem, and also the record of shortest concert currently in question.” Of course, the spokesperson was quick to add that Guinness World Records “admires the band and we encourage them to attempt any of the 40,000 active records currently housed in our database.” And knowing White, we’re pretty sure he’ll take them up on that offer. Slaughterhouse On Major-Label Debut: ‘We’re Done’

‘We take you on a ride through this album,’ Joell Ortiz tells MTV News of Welcome to: Our House. By Rob Markman, with reporting by James Lacsina Royce da 5″9″ of Slaughterhouse Photo: MTV News Slaughterhouse are putting the finishing touches on their humble abode. Welcome to: Our House , Slaughterhouse’s major-label debut on Shady Records, is scheduled for a June 12 release, and Eminem is just putting the finishing touches on the much-anticipated LP. “The album is done. In terms of vocal recording, we’re done. Marshall is still in the process of mixing, we still got a couple of records that we’re missing,” Royce da 5’9″ told MTV News on May 9 from the set of their “My Life” video. “We’re on pace for June, worst-case scenario, we’re looking at July, but it’s definitely coming, 100 percent. This isn’t SH’s first album, but ever since it was announced that Royce, Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz and Crooked I signed to Eminem’s Shady Records at the top of 2011, rap fans have been wondering what type of sound the major-label marriage would yield. “Fire,” Joe Budden said, describing the sound of the new album in a single word. His partner-in-rhyme Ortiz was a little more descriptive. “It’s a really personal album, but there are records like ‘My Life’ which are celebratory,” he said. Each member of Slaughterhouse is a master lyricist in his own right, and when they converge for group efforts, the expectations are that much higher. “There are records were those core Slaughterhouse fans will get their ‘Ohs and ahs’ like ‘OK, the pen is pushing,’ ” Ortiz said, promising a barrage of witty lyrics. “It’s themed, but we take you on a ride through this album. Y’all gonna enjoy it.” The group is so excited about the album that they are taking great care in making sure it isn’t leaked onto the Internet prematurely. In fact, Welcome to: Our House is so closely guarded, none of Slaughterhouse members even have a copy. “We don’t have the music, it stays in the studio. It’s safe there,” Ortiz told us. “But every time we go to record or just get up and meet in Detroit with Em and everybody at Shady, I personally ask them to hear records.” What are you hoping to hear on Welcome to: Our House ? Wiz Khalifa And Snoop Dogg’s ‘Mac & Devin’ Jams NY

Monday’s New York concert promotes ‘Mac & Devin Go to High School’ soundtrack, due December 13. By Rob Markman Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News Never mind that there’s almost a 20-year age difference between Wiz Khalifa and his big homey Snoop Dogg : On Monday night, the smoked-out duo stood on equal ground for the first time, as co-headliners at New York City’s Terminal 5. The Cali rap vet and MTV News’ Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010 were in the Big Apple to promote the soundtrack, set for release December 13, to their upcoming film, “Mac & Devin Go to High School.” After openers Chevy Woods and YG warmed up the crowd, Snoop walked out to his 2009 single “I Wanna Rock.” Dressed in all black, with black shades and two braids in his hair, Tha Doggfather shuffled across the stage flanked by three curvaceous female dancers, who started out in Adidas tracksuits but had stripped down to skimpy lingerie by the time Snoop performed Akon’s uncensored “I Wanna F— You,” three-quarters of the way through his set. Snoop’s half-hour solo portion of the show was filled with classics like Dr. Dre’s “Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang” and “Next Episode” as well as his own “Bitch Please” and “Who Am I? (What’s My Name?)” Wiz emerged later to perform his newer rap favorites. Starting with “Cabin Fever,” Khalifa bounced across the stage chanting, “If you see her, point her out,” acknowledging all the “bad bitches” in the crowd. Most of Wiz’s performance was centered around mixtape material. The Taylors gave overwhelming approval and applause as Cap ran through “Gang Bang” and Kush & Orange Juice faves “Never Been” and “In the Cut.” A brief intermission followed, during which scenes from “Mac & Devin Go to High School” played on the venue’s big screen. Snoop and Wiz then returned, this time together, performing in tandem and passing joints to and fro. First up was “That Good,” the initial collaborative “Mac & Devin” leak, on which Snoop dubs the stoner duo “the new Cheech and Chong.” From there, the Dogg launched into his classic “Gin & Juice” while Khalifa served up some ad-libs. Wiz encouraged his young Taylors to show the elder Snoop love, while the Dogg asked the crowd to congratulate the Pittsburgh breakout on his recent Grammy nomination for Best Rap Performance, and the audience happily obliged both requests. Though the two rocked solo songs like “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and “On My Level,” by the time Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa reached the show-closing “Young, Wild & Free,” their onstage chemistry was undeniable. Though there are a number of years between the two MCs, the duo proved that when it comes to rocking crowds, age ain’t nothing but a number. Have you seen Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa live? Robert Pattinson ‘Impressed’ Paul Giamatti In ‘Cosmopolis’

‘He’s a good judge of other actors,’ director David Cronenberg tells MTV News of RPattz co-star’s glowing review. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Robert Pattinson and Sarah Gadon in “Cosmopolis” Photo: Caitlin Cronenberg’s Twitter Last month, when MTV News asked David Cronenberg about working with Robert Pattinson on his upcoming film “Cosmopolis,” the director put his feelings about the “Twilight” heartthrob simply: “He’s sensational.” Cronenberg said that “Twilight” fans would see Pattinson in a way they aren’t used to, since the role shares more in common with the actor’s lesser-known films like “Little Ashes” and “Remember Me.” When the director walked the red carpet last week at the Gotham Independent Film Awards in support of his film “A Dangerous Method,” he stopped to speak again with MTV News’ Josh Horowitz, revealing which scenes in particular were the most challenging for Pattinson. “Probably the last couple of days was where there was just a long, long, maybe 15-minute scene with Paul Giamatti , just the two of them in a couple of rooms,” Cronenberg said. In “Cosmopolis,” Pattinson plays Eric Packer, a young millionaire who just wants to get his hair cut. Things go awry when his limo gets stuck in traffic and a stalker, played by Giamatti, causes even more trouble. Cronenberg said that one of the biggest testaments to Pattinson’s skill as an actor was the effect he had on his Academy Award-nominated co-star. “They were both brilliant, and Paul was really impressed,” he said. “If Paul’s impressed, he’s a good judge of other actors, and he said so publicly.” The director is simultaneously promoting “A Dangerous Method” and putting the finishing touches on “Cosmopolis.” Cronenberg said that juggling both has never been an issue: “I’ve edited ‘Cosmopolis,’ and I’m about to go to Paris next week to do the sound mix of it, but I can switch over. It’s like having two kids. When one kid comes through the door, you’re there for that kid.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Cosmopolis.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Eminem, Dr. Dre Inspire 50 Cent To Take His Time

‘I’ll be dead, I’ll be gone, and the material will still be here to influence new artists,’ 50 tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Eminem Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Recording with Dr. Dre and Eminem is bound to rub off eventually. While in the middle of recording his upcoming fifth solo album, 50 Cent has learned to take his time in the booth, and that in part explains the delay in releasing his LP. “This is the first time that I’ve recorded and I haven’t put pressure to release at a specific day. I’ve been on the shot clock the entire time. Dre and Em — I mean Dre’s record hasn’t been out in 11 years, so when you talk about perfection, it’s gotta be crazy, right?” he told MTV News while at a New York book signing for his just-released anti-bullying book, “Playground.” Dre’s 2001 was released in 1999 and not long after its release, fans began to hear rumblings about the oft-delayed Detox . Dre, a noted perfectionist, has been said to be putting the finishing touches on the LP for quite some time now, and recently Fif has adopted the super-producer’s ear for detail. “I think that provides additional pressure for him that it’s taken this long, and in Em’s case he has high standards too,” 50 said. “You wouldn’t believe how many times he records the records that you hear. He’s done it over and over and over and over to make it sound like the way that he feels it’s supposed to sound.” For his 2003 breakout hit “In Da Club,” the G-Unit general wasn’t nearly as meticulous as he has recently become. “In the beginning, it was like 30 minutes, ‘In Da Club’ was 30 minutes, to write it, have the vocals laid,” 50 revealed. “I punched in a few times, it didn’t matter it was good. Everybody bought it, they said it’s a classic and now it’s a process where I’m recording it, listening to it and saying, ‘I can do that better than that.’ ” The veteran hitmaker has realized the influence that his catalog has, and it is that realization that has him thinking differently. “I understand it now because all the material that I put out is gonna be here longer than I am,” he said. “So I’ll be dead, I’ll be gone, and the material will still be here to influence new artists moving forward.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: 50 Cent Related Artists Eminem Dr. Dre 50 Cent

‘Scream 4’: Why Didn’t It Slay The Box Office?

Movie experts weigh in on why Ghostface didn’t scare up impressive returns for the franchise. By Eric Ditzian Courteney Cox in “Scream 4” Photo: Gemma La Mana/ Dimension Films Unlike Indiana Jones and John McClane, Ghostface has not aged particularly well. While Indy’s franchise and McClane’s “Die Hard” films took lengthy breaks from the multiplex and returned with impressive box-office debuts, “Scream 4” got off to a start that fell on the low end of projections. The horror flick’s $19.3 million debut on more than 4,400 screens was, in fact, a major fall from the previous installment in 2000, which Box Office Mojo points out was $52 million when adjusted for ticket-price inflation. While insiders were hardly expecting “Scream 4” to live up to the performance of the original trilogy, the movie nonetheless failed to widely reconnect with moviegoers. So what happened? A combination of factors, according to industry experts, conspired to hold back the film and cast doubt on the idea that the Weinstein Company will be able to launch a fresh “Scream” trilogy. “Part of the reason that ‘Scream 4’ didn’t connect with audiences the way previous installments have is because of the overall climate change of horror films over the last decade,” said Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. “Whereas grisly deaths, bloodbaths and torture porn were once the order of the day, creepy and spooky — ‘Paranormal Activity,’ ‘Insidious’ — seem to be what horror audiences die for these days.” What’s more, it wasn’t just a matter of failing to link up with horror-movie trends but with broader changes in the entertainment landscape. ” ‘Scream’ was a pop-culture phenomenon of the late ’90s and it lost its relevancy soon after,” said Gitesh Pandya, editor of BoxOfficeGuru.com, pointing to that decade’s often heavily ironic humor. And then there’s a matter of Ghostface himself, a recognizable killer, to be sure, but one who’s by design changeable and thus potentially less iconic than other horror-movie villains. “The fact that Ghostface is a different person from movie to movie is both a good thing and a bad thing,” said Phil Contrino, editor of BoxOffice.com. “It creates suspense, but it also stops the character from becoming as powerful as Freddy Krueger or Michael Myers.” To all these issues add in the generally weak critical assessment, and you’ve got a recipe for a perfectly fine box-office debut but one that’s hardly impressive. While some insiders suspect the weak opening will dash plans to kick-start a new trilogy, others expect overseas ticket sales to compensate for subpar domestic business, increasing the likelihood of “Scream 5” shifting into production down the road. “This could end up grossing $100 million worldwide, which may lead to another sequel or reboot despite its lackluster Stateside debut,” Bock said. “Ghostface will likely terrorize audiences again, because the number-one rule for franchise fright flicks is: You can never keep a horror icon buried for long.” What did you think of “Scream 4”? Peter Facinelli ‘Stoked’ To Nab ‘Idol’ Castoff Paul McDonald For ‘Loosies’

Nikki Reed, Facinelli’s ‘Twilight’ co-star and McDonald’s girlfriend, brought the pair together for indie film’s soundtrack. By Kara Warner Peter Facinelli Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ Getty Images When he hasn’t been busy with the box-office-dominating “Twilight” movies or Showtime’s hit show “Nurse Jackie,” Peter Facinelli has been working on a passion project, “Loosies,” an independent film he wrote, produced and stars in. In addition to enlisting a high-caliber crew of actors for the project, MTV News has exclusively learned that Facinelli has teamed up with a very special musician to contribute music to the film’s soundtrack: recent “American Idol” castoff Paul McDonald . We caught up with Facinelli on Monday (April 18) to get the scoop on his exciting collaboration. “I was telling Nikki [Reed, McDonald’s girlfriend and Facinelli’s ‘Twilight’ co-star] I was looking for music for my movie, and she said, ‘You should look through Paul’s stuff,’ ” Facinelli recalled. “She was a big fan of his, I heard, and I thought it really worked for my movie, so I played some tracks over it, where we had temp tracks, and it just all worked. So I reached out to Paul, I sent him the movie, and he enjoyed it a lot, and he said he wanted to be a part of it, which I was stoked.” Facinelli added that McDonald’s original music is really inspirational and fit well with what he was doing on “Loosies.” “He has a band, and his band stuff is very different then what he was doing on ‘American Idol,’ ” Facinelli said. “I heard him on ‘American Idol,’ and I thought he was great, but when I heard the band, it’s very distinct and has a voice of its own, and I like the originality of it,” he explained. “So we’ll probably use most of the music from the two albums he has out now on iTunes,” which were recorded under the band names the Grand Magnolias and High Tide Blues. “Loosies” revolves around a pickpocket in New York, caught up in a fast-paced, hustlin’ lifestyle, until he is confronted by a woman with whom he had a one-night stand and is now pregnant. Facinelli is putting the finishing touches on the film before setting out to find distribution and hopefully a theatrical release. Ice Cube Insists Rhymes Are Shout-Outs, Not Disses

Forthcoming album I Am The West references Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, DJ Yella By Jayson Rodriguez Ice Cube Photo: MTV News Shots fired? Well, not quite. Ice Cube toys with some pretty popular names on his forthcoming album, I Am The West , spitting rhymes that leave Jay-Z, Dr. Dre and DJ Yella’s monikers in murky waters. But the veteran MC says that, upon closer listen, his lyrics are just referencing others for context — they aren’t personal attacks. “To me, it’s styling and finesse, that’s where I come from,” Cube told MTV News after previewing the album. “It’s a lot of MCs out there, it’s not dissing [them]. I guess when you mention these MCs that’s at the top of the game and you mention yourself in there, you letting [people] know you on top of your game, too. It’s on that tip. It’s just fresh, fly-ass lines. I couldn’t let them go once I thought of them; I had to write them down. But it’s not dissing.” Earlier this year, Cube released “Drink the Kool-Aid,” which featured the lines: “I ain’t the doctor/ This ain’t the patient/ This ain’t that n—a always on vacation/ This ain’t no white boy’s rehabilitation/ This is crazier then a boatful of Haitians.” The blogosphere jumped to a quick conclusion that the Los Angeles rapper was taking aim at his former N.W.A groupmate Dr. Dre. Cube, however, took to his Web site and . “I met Dr. Dre in the studio last night,” Cube wrote. “When I got there, Snoop was in the booth laying the finishing touches on another classic from the dynamic duo. He played me some tracks set for the up-and-coming Detox record and we talked about me jumping on board the project. Of course I talked about him doing sh– on my record, and he said he’d bless the album.” Last month, though, Cube told MTV News he and Dre for I Am The West . “He’s been M.I.A. for two to three months now,” Cube said, laughing. “But I don’t feel bad, because Snoop can’t find him either.” Related Artists Ice Cube
