Fun.’s ‘We Are Young’ Leads To Bigger Shows, Better Apartments

Band set to kick off big, bad tour in support of Some Nights next week. By James Montgomery Nate Ruess of Fun. Photo: MTV News Momentum has been building behind Fun. ‘s Some Nights album since September, when the band unveiled the teaser clip for “We Are Young,” their stirring anthem that is spending its second week in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 (alongside usual suspects Katy Perry, Adele and Rihanna), cementing its status as the first out-of-nowhere smash of 2012. Since that teaser, they’ve been the subject of innumerable “Next Big Thing” pieces and released a proper video for the song, and earlier this week, Some Nights finally hit stores. So with their single sitting high on the charts and a full-scale tour in support of their album set to kick off next week, one has to wonder what it’s like to actually be in the band at this very moment, as they stand perched on the brink of big-time success. “I think we’re very aware of what’s happening around us, and I think there’s a level of excitement, but I feel like there’s so much more to accomplish, and we do want to accomplish all of that,” frontman Nate Ruess told MTV News. “So any sort of victory that we might not have had the privilege of having over the last 10 years that might be coming now, we only give ourselves about a second and then we think, ‘All right, what’s next?’ ” “Also, having done this for such a long time, we’ve put all the emphasis on the artistic victories, so we’ve always just been trained for those to be the most satisfying ones,” guitarist Jack Antonoff added. “So anything that’s happening on the other side of things, I think the three of us just think, ‘It’s so exciting. Now we can make this artistic dream come true.’ If people are finding out about the band [now], we can have this elaborate stage set up that we’ve always dreamed of, or we can work with this producer, or get this instrument that we always wanted.” And if their enthusiasm seems somewhat tempered, well, you can’t blame them. After all, all three members of Fun. have logged time in previous bands (the Format, Steel Train, Anathallo), and they’ve each seen how quickly fortunes can change. Still, they’d be lying if they didn’t say they’re looking to take full advantage of their sorta superstar status — and you’ll be able to tell on their upcoming tour. “We’re taking every penny we can squeeze out of the band to create some sort of wild show, and I think we’re always going to do that,” Antonoff said. “So if you see us in a club that holds 1,000 people, you’re going to get a big show for that size club. … We’re always going to push it” So with one smash hit under their belts, Fun. will push on into 2012 looking to expand both their fanbase and their reach — which, of course, is going to require a bit of sacrifice. Then again, after slogging it out for 10 years, the guys in Fun. are sort of used to all that. “I’m kind of annoyed, because I finally got an apartment on the Upper West Side, and I was looking forward to being there, just, you know, the calm before the storm,” Ruess laughed. “Because I know how we are; we’re just going to be on tour for the whole entire year. So there’s not going to be any time at home. Oh well.” Will you check out Fun. on tour? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists fun.

Mary Matalin Battles Libs Arianna Huffington and Mark Green in New Radio Show

A new talk radio show launched this weekend that will certainly get a lot of attention from producers across the fruited plain if not from listeners. Called “Both Sides Now,” the program pits far-left internet publisher Arianna Huffington against conservative political consultant Mary Matalin. Unfortunately, there’s a glaring problem with the format: the host is the far-left leaning Mark Green who used to be the president of Air America Radio. As such, listeners will likely hear twice as many liberal views as conservative ones. Naturally, Green didn’t admit this in his debut announcement published at the Huffington Post Sunday: Welcome to the debut audio-blog of Both Sides Now w/ Huffington & Matalin. We’re a new nationally syndicated radio show whose name sort of conveys it all — Both Sides Now will be the first syndicated radio show that presents both sides with two prominent women. So instead of talk radio just being ideological monologues to the faithful, we’ll have two politically savvy women keeping each other on their toes. My goal as the host is to either clarify differences or bridge them. Clarify differences? Well, isn’t that special? Arianna’s got a far-left-leaning referee on the set to “clarify differences.” Readers are advised that Green co-authored 2004’s “The Book on Bush: How George W. (Mis)leads America” with the far-left writer Eric Alterman. His most recent work of “non-fiction” is “Change for America: A Progressive Blueprint for the 44th President,” which was co-produced by the far-left outlets New Democracy Project and the Center for American Progress; both are funded by George Soros. As such, having Green “clarify differences” between Huffington and Matalin is like having Yankee fans officiate a Yankees-Red Sox game. Nevertheless, as I am a HUGE fan of Matalin’s, it will be interesting to see how this format works. Stay tuned.

‘Futurama’ Returns With 26 All-New Episodes

I think we had a lot of stuff to get off our chests, so there are some really good episodes coming,” says series creator David X. Cohen. By Adam Rosenberg The cast of “Futurama” Photo: Comedy Central In 2003, disaster struck. After airing for four seasons and capturing the hearts of fans in the process with its incredible mix of bizarre humor and undeniable heart, Fox pulled the plug on the David X. Cohen/Matt Groening-created animated series “Futurama.” Hopes were reborn in 2007 when direct-to-DVD movies were announced for later airing as a pseudo fifth season on Comedy Central. But the real coup came in June 2009, when Fox announced that Comedy Central had picked up the show for 26 all-new episodes. The new batch begins tonight, with two episodes airing starting at 10 p.m. “I didn’t see it coming seven years ago, so it’s a pretty pleasant surprise,” Cohen told MTV in a recent interview. “We’ve had a real roller coaster on this show. We went off the air in 2003 on Fox and went our separate ways, and really didn’t have any hope at that time of coming back. It’s just not something that happens much in television. But then, lo and behold, these reruns went on along with ‘Family Guy’ at 2 a.m. on [Adult Swim] and people started to report to us that they were getting high ratings in the middle of the night, to our surprise.” “That was really the very first bit of hope we had at that point,” he continued. “And then ‘Family Guy’ blazed a trail, going to a direct-to-DVD release and then back to episodes, and that’s really when our hopes went up another notch. And sure enough, we then got the call to do some direct-to-DVD releases and subsequently these episodes. So [it’s been] a long road, but we’re pleased to be here.” Cohen admits that the call for more episodes came after the four “Futurama” movies were released to the world, being rabidly consumed by fans who still yearned for more. Before that, it was just more of the same waiting and hoping. “It remained typically dramatic in terms of our cancellation and rebirth history,” he said. “We actually finished all four of those movies not knowing we were coming back and we once again closed up shop and went home. Now in this case it was pretty quickly after that that we heard we were coming back, but we did not know yet. So I think they were really waiting to see how all four of those DVDs did before they went ahead and put us back on the air.” The end of the four movies certainly has a feeling of finality to it. “Into the Wild Green Yonder,” the last of the four, sends the series’ main players flying off into the great unknown, as Cohen says, “perhaps never to be seen again.” He added, “That was entirely representative of our own knowledge of our fates at that point.” Of the new season, he promises that, as strong as things start off — Comedy Central sent out tonight’s premiere episodes to press, and yes, they’re great — things just keep getting “better and better.” “It’s a relief to be back in our native half-hour format here, and I think we had a lot of stuff to get off our chests, so there are some really good episodes coming,” he said. But just because the team works best in their “native half-hour format,” that doesn’t mean Cohen doesn’t think the show could go bigger. Forget the direct-to-DVD movies, which are designed to be broken into individual episodes. Like “The Simpsons” a few years back, Cohen sees plenty of potential for a proper “Futurama” movie. “I actually think ‘Futurama’ is really ideal for a feature movie just because of the epic setting and the outer space opportunities and space battles — it seems better-suited for a feature movie than ‘The Simpsons,’ for example, which had a very successful movie,” he explained. “So if any Fox executives are reading this, yes I am available for that job!”

Toshiba to release Blu-ray player

AfterDawn readers will undoubtedly remember the Blu-ray versus HD DVD format war that ended last November with the demise of the HD DVD format. Toshiba , the main backer of the format, supposedly lost $1 billion USD as a result of the “war.” Today, the Japanese company announced they will be releasing their first Blu-ray player, the BD-18, by the end of the year. There were no other details about specifications or the aesthetics of the player.
