Real Friends: Solange Joins Earl Sweatshirt On The Latest Episode of His Red Bull Radio Show

Scott Dudelson/Getty Images Earl Sweatshirt And Solange Join Forces For Radio Show   For the latest episode of  Earl Sweatshirt’s Red Bull Radio show,  Earl Sweatshirt Stays Inside , the rapper and producer was joined by his former tour mate, “singer, songwriter, and self-professed fan of the show” Solange Knowles. A combination like this already sounds delightful from the jump, so it’s no surprise that their sit-down together was hilarious, insightful, and just all-around enjoyable. The two artists discussed a wide range of topics, which ranged from conspiracy theorists to wigs and all the way back to Ariana Grande. As far as the latter goes, Solange praised the 25-year-old singer on her new album. “ Sweetener  is that s**t,” she said to Earl. “It feels so good, summer vibes, really knows how to use her instrument. Just overall fire.” It’s pretty easy to see that these two have a special relationship, and more than anything, it’s just interesting to get an inside look at what Solange and Earl talk about with one another when they’re chilling on the tour bus. All we need now is some collaborative music from these two, but we’ll take what we can get. This special episode wraps up with an appearance by Gio Escobar of  Standing on the Corner , who embarks on “an hour-long journey through the space-time continuum” before honoring and celebrating John Coltrane’s birthday. You can watch the two-hour episode via Red Bull Radio above, or at Red Bull’s website here . This new episode of the Odd Future alum’s radio show airs just days after Earl teased the follow-up to his 2015 album,  I Don’t Like S**t, I Don’t Go Outside . Fans are more than ready for some new music from the rapper, so hopefully he keeps true to that promise.

SZA Comes Into Her Power On Ctrl

When SZA sings a tune, there is almost always a magical moment when her staccato melodies stretch into raspy riffs the ear might confuse for drum rolls. Perhaps her foundation in dance and gymnastics primed her ear for accentuating percussive undercurrents and adroitly contorting the instrument of her voice to match her emotional tonality. Fun.’s ‘We Are Young’ Leads To Bigger Shows, Better Apartments

Band set to kick off big, bad tour in support of Some Nights next week. By James Montgomery Nate Ruess of Fun. Photo: MTV News Momentum has been building behind Fun. ‘s Some Nights album since September, when the band unveiled the teaser clip for “We Are Young,” their stirring anthem that is spending its second week in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 (alongside usual suspects Katy Perry, Adele and Rihanna), cementing its status as the first out-of-nowhere smash of 2012. Since that teaser, they’ve been the subject of innumerable “Next Big Thing” pieces and released a proper video for the song, and earlier this week, Some Nights finally hit stores. So with their single sitting high on the charts and a full-scale tour in support of their album set to kick off next week, one has to wonder what it’s like to actually be in the band at this very moment, as they stand perched on the brink of big-time success. “I think we’re very aware of what’s happening around us, and I think there’s a level of excitement, but I feel like there’s so much more to accomplish, and we do want to accomplish all of that,” frontman Nate Ruess told MTV News. “So any sort of victory that we might not have had the privilege of having over the last 10 years that might be coming now, we only give ourselves about a second and then we think, ‘All right, what’s next?’ ” “Also, having done this for such a long time, we’ve put all the emphasis on the artistic victories, so we’ve always just been trained for those to be the most satisfying ones,” guitarist Jack Antonoff added. “So anything that’s happening on the other side of things, I think the three of us just think, ‘It’s so exciting. Now we can make this artistic dream come true.’ If people are finding out about the band [now], we can have this elaborate stage set up that we’ve always dreamed of, or we can work with this producer, or get this instrument that we always wanted.” And if their enthusiasm seems somewhat tempered, well, you can’t blame them. After all, all three members of Fun. have logged time in previous bands (the Format, Steel Train, Anathallo), and they’ve each seen how quickly fortunes can change. Still, they’d be lying if they didn’t say they’re looking to take full advantage of their sorta superstar status — and you’ll be able to tell on their upcoming tour. “We’re taking every penny we can squeeze out of the band to create some sort of wild show, and I think we’re always going to do that,” Antonoff said. “So if you see us in a club that holds 1,000 people, you’re going to get a big show for that size club. … We’re always going to push it” So with one smash hit under their belts, Fun. will push on into 2012 looking to expand both their fanbase and their reach — which, of course, is going to require a bit of sacrifice. Then again, after slogging it out for 10 years, the guys in Fun. are sort of used to all that. “I’m kind of annoyed, because I finally got an apartment on the Upper West Side, and I was looking forward to being there, just, you know, the calm before the storm,” Ruess laughed. “Because I know how we are; we’re just going to be on tour for the whole entire year. So there’s not going to be any time at home. Oh well.” Will you check out Fun. on tour? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists fun.

Kanye West’s ‘Power’ Lets Fans Know ‘He’s Back,’ Dwele Says

‘All I did was my thing: I added harmonies and lent my instrument for the joint,’ singer tells MTV News. By Jayson Rodriguez Dwele Photo: Getty Images Dwele’s voice has graced two of Kanye West’s moodiest songs, “Flashing Lights” and his most recent number, “Power.” But the Detroit native insists his contributions to the superstar MC’s work are minimal at best, despite their chemistry. “I got there [to the studio], and ‘Ye had an idea for what he wanted for the song,” Dwele told MTV News about “Power.” “So that’s all his creation. Pretty much all I did was my thing: I added harmonies and lent my instrument for the joint.” The singer’s voice highlights the song’s epic bridge, where his melody mixes with the vocal sample from British rock band King Crimson’s “21st Century Schizoid Man.” “Now, this would be a beautiful death,” Kanye raps while Dwele sings: “I’m jumping out the window/ I’m letting everything go/ I’m letting everything go.” “I think it’s dope,” Dwele said. “I think [the record] is doing what it’s supposed to do, as far as letting people know he’s back to rapping. He got some bars on that joint. I enjoy it. It’s one of those joints. I roll down the windows and ride out to it. I usually don’t play stuff that I’m on, but that song bangs.” Dwele is prepping the release of his next album, Wants World Women, later this month, June 29. The project is broken up into three sections, the first focusing on his alter ego and the last on classic “baby-making music.” (He directed three different commercials to highlight all three sections.) The middle section ( World ) addresses current events, in the vein of projects by Donnie Hathaway and Marvin Gaye, Dwele said. “It’s an audio time capsule of things going on in the world right now or with the economy, across the world and in our country the past few years,” he explained. “I’ve had a few songs for a few years now that I wanted to get out, and I really didn’t have the platform to get those out. So I felt like making a specific section on this album. It kind of came as an outlet or gave me the role to finally do it.” What do you think about Dwele’s work? Let us know in the comments! Didgeridoo Helps Crystal Bowersox Spice Up ‘Come Together’ On ‘Idol’

Addition of Australian pipe instrument made for night’s most eyebrow-raising moment. By Kyle Anderson Crystal Bowersox performs on “American Idol” on Tuesday Photo: FOX Tuesday night’s slightly surreal episode of “American Idol” featured a handful of eyebrow-raising moments. As the top nine contestants dipped into the Lennon/McCartney song catalog, we saw Lee Dewyze bring out a bagpiper during “Hey Jude,” Tim Urban turn “All My Loving” into a rockabilly shuffle and Michael Lynche spin “Eleanor Rigby” into a revivalist meeting. But the evening’s most head-scratching moment once again came courtesy of Crystal Bowersox, whose surprisingly middling version of “Come Together” was rescued by the bizarre addition of a didgeridoo in the arrangement. The didgeridoo (sometimes spelled “didjeridu” or referred to as simply “didge” or “didj”) is a traditional Australian pipe instrument that is little more than a hollowed-out cylinder of wood. When played, it emits a low droning tone that is meant to evoke the mysteries of nature (according to Aboriginal Australian tradition). The simple tones are used to accompany ceremonial dancing and singing, though the instrument can also be played for recreational purposes. Skilled didgeridoo playing requires mastery of circular breathing in order to make a continuous sound. Anthropologists are unsure just how old the didgeridoo is, but archeological evidence says that it could have been around as long as 1,500 years ago. Though primarily used in Australia, the didgeridoo has found its way into traditional Celtic music, trippier versions of electronic dance (Aphex Twin’s Didgeridoo EP explores the relationship between trance and the didgeridoo) and certain forms of jazz. It even makes occasional appearances in pop music, most notably in Australian superstar Xavier Rudd’s crossover tracks, which earned him touring spots with the likes of Jack Johnson and G. Love and Special Sauce. What did you think of Crystal Bowersox’s use of the didgeridoo? Did it add to her performance or was it distracting? Let us know in the comments!
