‘Man of Steel’ Photos − Zod Wins Kryptonian Staring Contest

Superman and General Zod  unleash their best tough-guy stares on separate Man of Steel collector covers for the UK’s  Empire magazine this week, and, I’m calling it, Zod wins.  All that screen time playing hard-asses ( Premium Rush ) and nut jobs ( Revolutionary Road ) has molded  Michael Shannon’s   mug into an incredibly effective billboard for threat and danger. He looks pissed and lethal here, And that gives him the slight edge in this Kryptonian staring contest. I realize Superman is supposed to be — at least initially — a reluctant hero in Zack Snyder’s  re-boot of the DC Comics franchise, but perhaps Henry Cavill’s handlers should consult with a real-life Derek Zoolander about devising a fresh fierce look for any media opportunities that will ensue between now and the movie’s U.S. release on Jun 14.

Warner Bros. Sets Man of Steel for June 14, 2013

Warner Bros. isn’t bringing Zack Snyder and Man of Steel to Comic-Con this year, but there’s always next year. Thursday, the studio announced that the Snyder-directed Superman reboot will hit theaters on June 14, 2013, a change from the previously set time period of December 2012. That gives the film separation from not only The Dark Knight Rises , but also The Hobbit — two other major WB properties. It also gives Kurt Johnstad time to finish those script revisions. Mark those Google Calendars accordingly. [ Coming Soon ]

Kneel Before Michael Shannon! Boardwalk Empire Baddie Is General Zod In Zack Snyder’s Superman

Are you there, Zod? It’s me, Michael Shannon. I may have my doubts about Zack Snyder as a director for the upcoming Man of Steel Superman reboot, but his casting has been right on the money of late. After casting Henry Cavil as the titular hero and Amy Adams as spunky girl reporter Lois Lane , Warner Bros. announced today that Academy Award-nominated actor Michael Shannon will be stepping into the black satin tap pants of General Zod.

Did Superman Returns Disappoint Because It Was Too Female Oriented?

While Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch getting knocked around by critics , it’s as good a time as any to remember that he’s the man responsible for bringing Superman back to the big screen for Warner Bros. The renewed enthusiasm for the Man of Steel here in 2011 has led some to wander back to 2006, and the nearly forgotten about Superman Returns from director Bryan Singer. How come that movie failed to connect with audiences? Singer has an idea.

Review Round-Up: So What Did SXSW Critics Think of The Beaver?

While audiences nationwide will have to wait even longer to see how Mel Gibson fares as a man who depends on a beaver hand puppet to get through a mid-life crisis, a handful of critics saw Jodie Foster’s The Beaver last night at SXSW . According to the early word, it looks like anyone hoping for unbridled insanity or off-the-wall comedy will have to wait for an SNL parody. But what did critics think of the movie on its own terms?

VIDEO: The Greatest Movie Title Sequences, Together at Last

So as we noted , SXSW goes beyond the basic Audience and Jury prizes and also doles out honors in categories like Poster Design and Title Sequence. At the screening honoring finalists in the latter category, juror Ian Albinson put together this nifty video, A Brief History of Title Design . While it’s by no means comprehensive, the montage is breezy and well-edited. Also, it ends with the undisputed champion of all title sequences. That said, I think Jean-Luc Godard’s giant, colorful titles should have gotten props here. What else is missing?
