Katy Perry Ties Michael Jackson Singles Record

‘Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)’ marks Perry’s fifth #1 single from Teenage Dream, equal only to MJ’s Bad achievement. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: C. Flanigan/ FilmMagic Back in June, Katy Perry was closing in on Michael Jackson ‘s record for the most #1 singles from the same album — and now she’s tied it up. Thanks to the feel-good party jam “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” Perry has the same number of #1 singles from Teenage Dream on the Hot 100 as the late King of Pop did from 1987’s Bad. Now, Perry is both the only woman with five #1 singles from the same album and also the only living artist with that record. So what singles got her there aside from “Last Friday Night”? Perry’s previous #1’s from Teenage Dream are “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Firework” and “E.T.” Jackson achieved this feat back in 1987 and 1988 with “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” “Bad,” “The Way You Make Me Feel,” “Man in the Mirror” and “Dirty Diana” from his Bad album. “What a way to wake up! SO proud to announce that the little-engine-that-could of a song ‘LAST FRIDAY NIGHT’ is officially #1 & made HISTORY!” the singer tweeted Wednesday (August 17). “&u know, I couldn’t have done it with out ya, really I owe u guys BIG… so take this moment to give yourself a high FIVE!!! #allbecauseofu.” Explore our “Katy Perry: By The Numbers” infographic: Perry broke another singles record earlier this month, having the first album from the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart to have five #1 singles. Perry’s Teenage Dream album is the first in the nearly 19-year history of the chart to accomplish that feat. “Last Friday Night” has proven to be another successful track for the star, and the party anthem recently got an assist from Missy Elliott on the remix . Perry’s Teenage Dream videos have also been cultural smashes. For the 2011 Video Music Awards , Perry racked up the most nominations with nine, including nods for Video of the Year and Best Female Video for “Firework”; Best Pop Video for “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”; and Best Collaboration, Best Art Direction, Best Direction, Best Editing and Best Special Effects for the Floria Sigismondi-directed “E.T.,” which features fellow nominee Kanye West. Her dreamy “Teenage Dream” clip even nabbed a nomination for Best Cinematography. What’s your favorite Teenage Dream single? Let us know in the comments below! The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Katy Perry Sets Singles Record With ‘Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)’

Perry breaks Billboard Mainstream Top 40 record following her nine VMA nominations for tracks from Teenage Dream. By Gil Kaufman Katy Perry Photo: John Parra/ WireImage It took her a bit longer than expected, but Katy Perry’s persistence and the inescapable, saxophone-bleating 1980s vibe of “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” were just too much for music fans to resist. Perry, who is nominated for a leading nine Moonmen at the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards , finally snagged the record as the first album from the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart to have five #1 singles. According to The Hollywood Reporter , Perry’s Teenage Dream album is the first in the nearly 19-year history of the chart to achieve the feat, thanks to “Friday Night” bumping up one spot to #1 this week. “Friday Night” joins the other chart-toppers from Perry’s Dream album, which include the title track, “California Gurls,” “Firework” and “E.T.” The record puts her in pretty impressive company, landing Perry just ahead of Lady Gaga ( The Fame ) and Justin Timberlake ( FutureSex/LoveSounds, whose albums yielded four #1s apiece. “Friday Night” also broke some other new ground, setting the high watermark for most weekly plays in the chart’s history (12,468), blowing past the old record, which she also held with “E.T.” (12,361). Even more impressive, the five singles from Dream account for five of the six songs with the chart’s highest-ever weekly spin totals, with Pitbull’s “Give Me Everything” acting as the spoiler at #4 with 12,107. The next potential record to fall could be the biggie Perry’s been waiting for. She’s still looking to become just the second artist ever to mark five #1 singles from the same album on the Billboard Hot 100, a mark held by Michael Jackson’s Bad . She’s got four #1s already and “Friday” moved up from 3 to 2 on last week’s chart, so it could happen. The Hunger Games First Look: Josh Hutcherson! Liam Hemsworth!

Two months ago, Entertainment Weekly gave readers their first look at Jennifer Lawrence in the main Hunger Games role of Katniss Everdeen. Hemsworth, of course, is mostly known for dating Miley Cyrus . But director Gary Ross stands up for the Australian actor in an interview with the magazine and says: “On first glance he’s such a hunk that it’s easy to just sort of ascribe a hunk-like simplicity to him. But this is a phenomenally subtle actor.” For more on The Hunger Games , pick up this issue of Entertainment Weekly – and continue to visit THG all the way through the film’s March 21, 2012 release date!

Larry Flynt to Daniel Tosh: Run My Company!

Hustler CEO Larry Flynt is going to be out of town for a few weeks. That’s nice for him. Obviously, he wants Daniel Tosh to run Hustler while he’s gone. Flynt just shot a video message just for the Tosh.0 host, saying “I’m gonna be out of town and I WANT YOU to run Hustler ‘s editorial meeting.” Why Daniel Tosh of all people? Flynt’s camp says he’s kicking around idea of a guest editor … and he just likes the guy. That’s all there is to it. Who knew Larry was such a big fan of viral video-related comedy? A Hustler rep tells TMZ , “[Tosh] will be allowed to plan the magazine’s editorial meetings for one month … he will be given a blank canvas.” Flynt’s even offering Tosh his own office with a “Hustler model secretary.” Hustler hasn’t heard back from Tosh regarding the unique offer. Pitbull, Marc Anthony Brave Heat In ‘Rain Over Me’ Video

Miami MC joined by Salsa crooner in sexy new clip for Pit’s summer-ready jam. By Jocelyn Vena Pitbull and Marc Anthony in ‘Rain Over Me’ Photo: PoloGrounds It’s a good time to be Pitbull . When he’s not throwing parties with Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer in his “Give Me Everything” video, Pit is busy helping Marc Anthony find his groove in the sexy, sleek new “Rain Over Me” video. The single “Rain Over Me” is off the rapper’s Planet Pit album, which dropped earlier this summer. In the clip, VMA-nominated Pitbull and newly separated Marc Anthony take the party to the only place where it doesn’t rain — the desert. So, sure it doesn’t rain in the desert, but well-tailored suits and pretty ladies (and some product placement) are aplenty in the barren setting. While the guys hang outside in the sweltering heat amid a shack-style location, a group of ladies swim around in a pool elsewhere trying to keep cool as the song’s hot beats play in the background. The conclusion seems to be that if you party hard enough in the desert — and look cool while doing it — you can eventually make it rain. The duo not enjoy the company of beautiful ladies, they eventually find themselves drenched. And there’s really no better way to cool off after all that time in the sun. “Rain Over Me” is just the latest summer jam from the Miami rapper. He recently spoke to MTV News about what makes the perfect summer tune. “People need to escape from everything that’s going on. And … if they’re going to spend the last $20 they made — and they only made $50 for the week — they want to spend it having a good time, not running into drama,” he said. “So I’m more than blessed to be a part of this summer and the great music out there.” And “Rain Over Me” isn’t the first time Pitbull has collaborated with someone in the former Lopez-Anthony household. Earlier this year, he found chart success with J.Lo on her equally club-ready hit “On the Floor.” What do you think of Pit and Marc Anthony’s video? Tell us in the comments! VMA Nominee Leader Katy Perry, By The Numbers

It’s not just those nine VMA nods — it’s been a record-setting year for Katy. By Gil Kaufman Katy Perry Photo: C. Flanigan/ FilmMagic There’s no other way to say it: Katy Perry is having a moment. Actually, she’s having 525,600 moments, as in 365 days of record-smashing, parent-upsetting, whipped cream-spurting, alien-loving, Indian wedding-having minutes of awesomeness. And what better way to top it off than with a field-leading nine MTV Video Music Award nominations? Perry leads this year’s field , as well she should, given that her clips for such hits as “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” “Teenage Dream,” “Firework” and “E.T.” have become modern classics and racked up millions of online views. But the year has been about a whole lot more than gummy video goodness, so we decided to take a look back and crunch some numbers on the Year in Katy: Explore our “Katy Perry: By The Numbers” infographic: 4 million : Number of digital copies Perry’s “E.T.” has sold so far. In fact, it joins her hits “California Gurls,” “Firework,” “Hot N Cold” and “I Kissed a Girl” in reaching that mark. 48 : That’s the record Perry shattered for the most consecutive weeks with a single inside the top 10, beating out Swedish popsters Ace of Base. 2 : Number of beefs Perry got into with Lady Gaga and Britney Spears. Though it was quickly squashed, for a minute it seemed as if the former Christian singer had dissed Gaga’s “Alejandro” video for its use of religious imagery . Months later, Perry denied taking a swipe at Spears over product placement in Britney’s “Hold it Against Me” video. 4 : Perry came this close to making history this summer when it looked like “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” would become the fifth single from Teenage Dream to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. If she had hit the top (she stalled, ironically at #4), she would have become the first female artist to ever have five #1 songs off the same album and the first artist of either gender to do it since Michael Jackson (in the period between 1987 and 1988). 2 : Number of times Perry has appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine since Teenage Dream came out. 17 : Shots of Perry’s nearly naked rear end in the “California Gurls” video . (Not like we sat there and counted or anything.) Billions : Amount of Gummi Bears that Perry offended when she cast some nude, crude and middle-finger-flipping rude candy bears in the “Gurls” video. 9 : record-setting number of weeks Eminem’s Recovery would have spent at #1 had Teenage Dream not rained on its parade. 0 : Total number of celebrities besides Perry who have had their “Sesame Street” bits shelved because they showed too much cleavage. 2 : Number of elephants (Laxmi and Mala) involved in Perry and Russell Brand ‘s wedding in India in October. Also involved in the wedding? Jugglers, acrobats, a drum troupe and traditional Indian Rajasthani folk singers and dancers. 0 : Number of famous couples besides Perry and Brand who have flirted and gone on a date and then gotten married after being introduced at the VMAs . The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
