Random Ridiculousness: 62-Year-Old Woman Adopted By 85-Year-Old Man For His $100 A Month Rent-Controlled Apartment

This woman deserves the pimp of the year award. You got an 85-year-old man to adopt you and his $100 a month rent-controlled apartment? Please gives us lessons in pimpin’ 101. Woman Adopted By Man For His Rent Control Apartment According to NY Post What does it take to get a rent-controlled apartment in New York City? For the 62-year-old sister of the mayor of Salt Lake City, it was a death-bed adoption by a senile 85-year-old man in order to claim rights to his Queens apartment and its $100-a-month rent. Although Pamela Becker grew up in a privileged family — her actual father, the late Ralph Becker, was US ambassador to Honduras during the Ford administration — she has chosen a low-rent lifestyle in Long Island City. And she took a curious route to get there. Married at the Waldorf-Astoria in 1976 and later divorced, Becker came to Long Island City in the 1990s. A cat-sitting gig brought her to a six-unit apartment building on 47th Road. There, she met Nicholas “Uncle Nicky” DeTommaso, a retired dock worker and generous man who liked to keep his door open and cook for his neighbors. DeTommaso was married for just six weeks in 1950 and had lived in the 47th Road building his whole life. Friends described him as a gregarious “Star Trek” fan. Becker befriended him and would take him shopping. By 2002, she had moved into the two-bedroom railroad-flat apartment. “She has a way of working on you until she gets what she wants,” according to a neighbor. Becker managed to get a power of attorney for DeTommaso in 2007, meaning she could make financial and legal decisions for him. Less than a month before DeTommaso died, Becker got the big prize: a new dad with deep pockets and piddling rent. Her adoption was formalized on June 23, 2009, and she had already become the beneficiary of his life insurance and pension, records show. Becker told The Post she took good care of DeTommaso as his health flagged, but denied he was senile. The onetime yoga instructor got DeTommaso to buy her a series of cars even though he did not drive, the neighbor said. “I feel sorry for her; she doesn’t have anyone,” DeTommaso would tell his friends. Becker managed to get a power of attorney for DeTommaso in 2007, meaning she could make financial and legal decisions for him. “Some people said I should marry him. I didn’t want to marry him — that’s gross. I don’t do stuff like that,” Becker said from the flat where she lives with two dogs and a cat. When DeTommaso died, the building’s owners thought the unit would be available and they could charge market-rate rent of $1,500 a month. They were shocked to learn Becker had been adopted by her elderly roommate and claimed she would “remain in this apartment for as long as I live.” She even changed her name to Maria DeTommaso. Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker Jr. said through a spokesman that his sister has “some challenges” and had been estranged from the family for “quite some time.” He said he was unaware of her adoption. But the “family ties” may have broken for Becker. The state Division of Housing and Community Renewal last month ruled she was not entitled to the apartment because she lived as a “family member” in the apartment for only 22 days before DeTommaso’s death. “I’m legally adopted,” insisted Becker, who has refused to move out. “I’m going to win this battle.” Do you think she is right to stand her ground or is she just another gold-diggin’ hussy? R.I.P.: Country Singer Mindy McCready Commits Suicide At The Age Of 37

According to USA Today: Mindy McCready, a country singer better known recently for her ongoing personal troubles than for her string of late-’90s hits, died Sunday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at her Arkansas home, the Cleburne County sheriff said. Sheriff Marty Moss said his office received a call to the McCready home around 3:30 p.m. local time in Heber Springs, Ark., west of Memphis and north of Little Rock. “Ms. McCready is deceased from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Moss told USA TODAY. In a statement, he said officers arrived on the scene at 3:58 p.m. and found McCready’s body on the front porch. The case is under investigation; McCready will be transported to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for an autopsy. Moss said her family has been notified of her death. Earlier Sunday night, Dateline NBC correspondent Andrea Canning tweeted, “Just got a call from Mindy McCready’s best friend that she shot and killed herself this evening. My heart breaks for her two boys.” Nashville television reporter Stacy McCloud tweeted that four sources, including a member of McCready’s family, had confirmed the singer’s suicide and that a statement from the family was in the works. McCready’s country hits included her 1996 debut single, Ten Thousand Angels, and the chart-topping Guys Do It All the Time. She released her last album, I’m Still Here, in 2010. Canning interviewed McCready for Dateline after the singer’s boyfriend, record producer David Wilson, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound last month. “I just started screaming, calling 911″ after Wilson shot himself, McCready told Canning. “I laid down next to him. I just pleaded with him not to die.” McCready entered rehab shortly after Wilson’s death. The couple’s son, Zayne, was born last April. McCready also had a 6-year-old son, Zander, from a previous relationship. In 1997, she became engaged to Dean Cain, star of TV’s Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, though the couple broke up in 1998. She also claimed to have had a long-term affair with Major League Baseball pitcher Roger Clemens that began when she was 15. Over the last decade, McCready made more headlines for her run-ins with the law than for her music, with arrests for buying painkillers with a fake prescription, identity theft, battery and violating probation. McCready had attempted suicide at least three times. She was hospitalized in July and September 2006 following drug overdoses and then again in December 2008 after she cut her wrists. In 2010, she appeared on the TV reality series Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew. Damn. WENN

Cindy Anthony, Mother of Casey Anthony, Offers Compelling Testimony Against Accused Killer

The prosecution in the Casey Anthony murder trial once again called a crucial witness to the stand on Tuesday: Anthony’s mother, Cindy. Testifying for the third time in the trial, Cindy helped the prosecution establish and connect key bits of evidence against Casey Anthony. Items found with murdered Caylee Anthony ‘s remains can be traced back to the Anthony home, according to the testimony from Cindy. As Cindy left the stand and took her seat next to husband George, she mouthed “I love you” to Casey, but her daughter looked away. Cindy Anthony was among the last of the prosecution witnesses. The defense case – full of shocking claims – is expected to begin this week. Cindy testified today that a canvas laundry bag had been missing from the family home. A similar bag was found with Caylee’s remains. She also said a Winnie-the-Pooh blanket was missing; a similar one was found at the scene. But the most disturbing revelation came later. Decomposing hair found in Casey Anthony’s trunk – long, brown and untreated by chemicals – could belong to Cindy, Casey or Caylee Anthony. Prosecutor Linda Drane Burdick also asked Cindy about her hair length, coloring and style. “I’ve had this hairstyle since 2002,” Cindy Anthony testified. Her hair is short and dyed blonde – not a match to the hair found in the trunk. She also testified that at the time of Caylee’s death, Casey kept her hair short and dyed – again, not a match for the hair in the trunk. Defense attorney Jose Baez later left Cindy in tears as he tried to point out inconsistencies between her testimony and a 2009 deposition. “I don’t remember everything I said,” Cindy sighed. “It was a two-day deposition.” Earlier, investigator Alina Burrows testified that a sheet of heart-shaped stickers, each the size of a dime, was found in Casey’s bedroom. That was just days after Caylee’s body was found in 2008. The jury on Monday heard gruesome testimony that heart-shaped sticker residue was found on duct tape on Caylee Anthony’s skull. Over objections by Anthony’s attorneys, prosecutors showed photos of the stickers found in the top drawer of Anthony’s bedroom dresser.

Source: Oksana Grigorieva Extortion Charge "Unlikely" in Mel Gibson Case

The extortion investigation of Mel Gibson’s ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva drags on, with the case still not turned over to the L.A. District Attorney. This has left prosecutors “frustrated” as they look to move forward with the domestic violence case against Mel and the extortion case against Oksana. Until files are turned over, the D.A. can’t file charges or drop the case. While the investigation was said to be “substantially done” last week, prosecutors now don’t think they will receive the case until next week, if that. “The amount of hours the Sheriff’s Department spent investigating Oksana is mind boggling,” said one source. As is the fact that Mel ever dated her . Sheriff’s officials have spent months investigating claims that she, or someone close to her, tried to trade her silence in exchange for Gibson’s cash. The two are also in a bitter custody dispute over one-year-old Lucia. “The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is stalling in turning over the Oksana case to the D.A.,” said a source with knowledge of the case. “It literally started out as probe into claims of extortion and now has evolved into them going over the testimony from the family law case.” “Prosecutors are getting very frustrated that they haven’t officially turned it over and it’s delaying a decision whether to charge Mel Gibson.” One theory: “It’s almost as if the cops are waiting for Oksana to commit a crime to bolster their findings, which so far, are very anemic.” “It’s unlikely any charges will be filed against Oksana Grigorieva .” Grigorieva has claimed Gibson punched her in the head at his Malibu home on January 6 if last year, while she held their then-infant daughter. In Mel’s sworn declaration, dated June 23, he admitted to slapping his ex across the face because she was hysterical and he feared for Lucia. He denies he punched her then or any other time. It’s unclear if Mel will be charged, and what role, if any, Kristian Herzog will play in whether or not authorities decide to pursue either case.

Can I be part of the team?” Kimmel asked. “I think I might make you campaign manager,” Johnston replied. As for potential votes from the family of two-time ex-fiancee Bristol Palin , he’s not counting on them. In fact, he says he’d be shown the door in two seconds. Guru’s Family Releases Statement About His Death

‘We are proud of all his many legendary musical contributions,’ family says of legendary Gang Starr MC. By Gil Kaufman Guru Photo: Getty Images The family of late Gang Starr founder Guru (born Keith Elam) released a statement on Wednesday morning in reaction to the legendary rapper’s death from cancer-related causes on Monday at the age of 43. “The Elam family wishes to thank the fans of our son/brother/father uncle/nephew/cousin Keith, a.k.a. Guru, for the outpouring of love, concern and support,” the statement reads. “Our hearts are broken by the loss of someone we loved so much. Guru was devoted to his young son, who will most keenly feel his absence.” According to the family, the MC had suffered from the aggressive cancer multiple myeloma for over a year and mounting complications from that illness led him to suffer respiratory failure and cardiac arrest last month. “As a result, Guru was in a coma from mid-February until his death and never regained consciousness,” the statement continues. “Early on the morning of April 19th, he became hypertensive due to low blood pressure. He again went into cardiac arrest and slipped away from us. “Guru died far too young but he was, and we are, proud of all his many legendary musical contributions.” The family said it is not aware of any foundation established by Guru to which fans can send donations, but they are working out a memorial at which admirers can pay their respects. “We know and understand that countless fans want to express their condolences and love and, to that end, we are planning a memorial event in the near future that will be all-inclusive,” the statement read. “Please look for further details from the family as they become available.” Guru’s death has not been without controversy. Some fans questioned the rapper’s “farewell” letter , provided by partner Solar, which contained some harsh comments directed at former Gang Starr DJ Premier. On Tuesday, Solar responded to the criticism, saying, “Guru knew this time would come. The great artist he is, us being intelligent people, we knew there was going to have to be a statement relating to this,” Solar explained of the letter, which also said that the music Guru made with Solar was among the best of his career. “Unfortunately, there are those who have the wicked agenda, and just can’t accept that Guru and I have handled this thing as men and not children, and this is how men of honor handle their business. He arranged his press release. I’m the repository of Guru’s life story. I recorded his life story for book and for movies. We’re not foolish. He was diagnosed with cancer well over a year ago. It’s been operations and so forth. It would be ridiculous for him to not be prepared.” Share your memories of Guru and Gang Starr in the comments below.
