One Direction: Number-One at the Box Office!

The Butler was no match for the boy band. After a strong opening day showing at the box office, One Direction continued to dominate on Saturday and Sunday, racking up $17 million in total profits and finishing the holiday weekend as the top film in all the land. Harry Styles and company easily out-earned Katy Perry: Part of Me , which only brought in $7.3 in its opening few days, although the young singers could not toppled Justin Bieber and his opening mark of $29 million food Never Say Never . With the victory, This Is Us knocked Lee Daniels’ The Butler from its top perch, but not by much. Here’s a look at the top five grossing films of Labor Day weekend: One Direction: This Is Us: $17 million Lee Daniels’ The Butler: $14.7 million We’re the Millers: $12.6 million Planes: $7.8 million Instructions Not Included: $7.5 million

They Don’t Really Care About US: Jury Finds George Zimmerman Not Guilty On Every Count In Murder Of Trayvon Martin

WTF is George Zimmerman smiling about??? Via CNN reports : George Zimmerman is not guilty of the murder of Trayvon Martin, a Florida jury decided late Saturday. The fact that Zimmerman fired the bullet that killed Martin was never in question, but the verdict means the six-person jury had reasonable doubt that the shooting amounted to a criminal act. The verdict caps a case that has inflamed passions for well over a year, much of it focused on race and gun rights. The six-person jury — all women — basically had three choices: to find Zimmerman guilty of second-degree murder; to find him guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter; or to find him not guilty. The jurors deliberated for 16½ hours total, including 13 on Saturday alone, before delivering its verdict. Zimmerman smiled and then shook his lawyer’s hands when he learned his fate. His parents, Robert and Gladys Zimmerman, were seated nearby, but Martin’s parents were not in the courtroom. Earlier in the day, the jury had asked the court for clarification on its instructions regarding manslaughter. The jury couldn’t have even posed such a query a few days ago: Judge Nelson ruled Thursday, over the defense’s vehement objection, to include manslaughter as an option for jurors, in addition to a second-degree murder charge. The question — the jurors’ first since late Friday afternoon, when they requested an inventory of evidence — was read out in court shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday. After a brief discussion between lawyers and the judge, the court recessed for about 40 minutes. When it reconvened, shortly before the judge announced the jury had ordered dinner, prosecutors and defense lawyers agreed to a response to the jury’s question — basically asking for more detail. “The court cannot engage in general discussions but may be able to address a specific question regarding clarification of the instructions regarding manslaughter,” their response to the jury says. “If you have a specific question, please submit it.” Manslaughter, under Florida law, is “the killing of a human being by the act … of another, without lawful justification … and in cases in which such killing shall not be excusable homicide or murder.” It is a second-degree felony. According to the jury instructions, Zimmerman could be convicted of manslaughter if jurors believe he “intentionally committed an act or acts that caused the death of Trayvon Martin.” “George Zimmerman cannot be guilty of manslaughter by committing a merely negligent act or if the killing was either justifiable or excusable homicide,” the instructions add. “Each of us has a duty to act reasonably toward others. If there is a violation of that duty, without any conscious intention to harm, that violation is negligence.” To convict Zimmerman of second-degree murder, the jury would have to believe that “there was an unlawful killing of Trayvon Martin by an act imminently dangerous to another and demonstrating a depraved mind without regard for human life.” Such a killing would have to be “done from ill will, hatred, spite or an evil intent” and would be “of such a nature that the act itself indicates an indifference to human life.”

Britney Spears Explains X Factor Walk-Off

Britney Spears walked off the set of The X Factor on Monday after a drag queen showed up doing an apparently awful rendition of Spears’ “(You Drive Me) Crazy.” How come? Spears explained today that she was just following the instructions of Demi Lovato.. who is incidentally 11 years her junior. Lovato – who herself reacted unfavorably to a rap about bath salts this week – apparently told Spears during the performance: “Let’s go.” Spears then followed orders, departing the the set and returning later to tell the performer that she liked the tribute – but it wasn’t X Factor material. For her part, Lovato said she felt bad for the singer, who was apparently on the floor crying after the performance because he thought he nailed it. Sorry dude. Not the case. It does take some guts to dress in drag and perform a Britney Spears song in front of Britney Spears. But you should probably go into it expecting a walk-off. Or at least a great deal of mockery.

My Bieber Experience was on November 11, 2010 (11/11 ironic…

My Bieber Experience was on November 11, 2010 (11/11   ironic huh?). Basically I’m know for being obsessed with Justin and my family knows it more than anyone so when we heard Justin was coming to town, I basically had to get tickets. It took my dad a couple months but in like October/September he came up with some and I was beyond excited. I also had two extra tickets to take my two friends. I was so excited, I had a countdown in my assignment planner and it was all I talked about! I started a membership on Bieberfever.com and entered to win meet & greets. It was 1 week before the concert and I was walking home with my friend. We were talking about the concert and how I had entered to meet him. We ended our conversation at my house. I walked inside and my whole family was sitting in the family room, which is a VERY rare occasion. I was like um hey what’s going on and my dad handed me a large envelope. I was like what is this and he just said to open it up. There was a printed out email inside and the first words I saw were DAVE REYNOLDS (shoutout to @davereynoldscba). I dropped to the ground and sobbed! I knew what it was. My dad told me to read it out loud and it happened that the radio guy my dad got tickets from happened to have extra meet and greets. Inside were the instructions for the meet and greet. I of course called my friends and we were all psyched! We kept it quiet for a while but on the day of the concert, word started getting out that we were leaving school earlier to go down to the Wolstein Center. We made our way to an overhang above Justin’s bus. We saw/talked to Kenny, Ry Good, and all of  Justin’s  crew but there was no sign of Justin! Pattie came out, the cutest most adorable mom ever, and said Justin was taking a nap and he would be out soon! We saw him a couple times and we waved and I almost fainted. Dave Reynolds posted a vid of us (to the left in the purple!)   Soon it was time to meet Justin! I was having a heart attack in the line watching him take pictures with people through the black curtain. It was our turn to go in and Justin and Dave had just finished taking a picture. The first thing I saw were his eyes and he lost me there. I faintly remember him saying hi and putting his arm around me. At one point the camera wasn’t working and he was just laughing with us. We took our picture and I was just like thank you! Bye! He told us to enjoy the concert and it was nice meeting us! I was starstruck the rest of the night, I was shaking and my friend Lia cried after we met him! It was so funny so I taped it!  T he concert was amazing, I laughed and cried, mostly sobbed! Ry Good gave me a hug in the middle of ‘Never let you go’ as I was sobbing! It’s been almost 10 months since MBE, and I know it wasn’t insanely cool or extravagant  but I will NEVER forget it! Honestly and wholeheartedly, NEVER SAY NEVER! Thanks JB -@maddi_cin Read more here: My Bieber Experience was on November 11, 2010 (11/11 ironic…

What Does ‘Lost’ ‘s Hurley Think Of Weezer’s Hurley? We Asked Him!

‘It’s extremely special … that this is actually happening,’ Jorge Garcia says of being face and inspiration for band’s new album. By James Montgomery The cover of Weezer’s Hurley Photo: Epitaph Most folks probably know Jorge Garcia as Hugo “Hurley” Reyes, the loveably scruffy character he portrayed for six seasons on “Lost.” But earlier this week, Garcia’s name was thrust back into the spotlight again when it was revealed that he was the cover star of — and apparent inspiration for — Weezer’s upcoming Hurley album . But according to Garcia, none of this should really come as a surprise. After all, he’s been a music-industry vet for years now. “I used to work at this store called Music Plus in San Clemente, California, when I was growing up, and then they became Blockbuster Music, and, like, you had to get a haircut to work there, and at the time I had some pretty long hair. So after that policy was imposed, I knew that was going to be my last summer working there,” Garcia told MTV News on Wednesday (August 11). “And then a little later, I worked in the music department of Borders, selling CDs there. So I remember the boxes of CDs coming … and I remember in the morning, setting up the ‘new release’ endcaps and having to put a bunch of copies on there and making sure they were properly stickered and all that.” And although you’d think that kind of retail experience would’ve made him a natural to grace an album cover one day, Weezer were actually the first band to come calling. And, yes, Garcia finds the entire thing just as weird as you do. “I went to do the George Lopez show [‘Lopez Tonight’], and I think they were doing two or three shows that night, and [Weezer frontman] Rivers [Cuomo] was a guest in the previous show. So they came and knocked on my door and said, ‘Hi,’ and wanted to get a picture with me, and I thought that was awesome. We chatted briefly, and that was it,” he said. “And I didn’t hear until a couple months later that they wanted to put me on the cover … I didn’t realize it was just going to be that same picture we took together, cropped down to my face. When I look at the picture, I notice that there’s something going on with my hair, like it’s starting to come loose or something. But I’m happy with it.” Garcia, who cites Bon Iver, M. Ward and the New Pornographers as some of his favorite acts, said he’s always been a casual fan of the Weezer (“I don’t recognize Maladroit so much,” he laughed) and added that being featured on the cover of Hurley is one of the biggest honors he’s received in his career. “This is really close to the top, for sure,” he said. “I think the [‘Lost’] action figure still kind of trumps it, but just coming from where I come from, it’s extremely special and dear to my heart that this is actually happening.” While Garcia will make an appearance in stores on August 24 when the sixth season of “Lost” is released on DVD, he’s really looking forward to September 14, when Hurley is due. Though, given his previous retail experience, he’s already dreading what might happen. “Sometimes when we were pricing CDs, we’d just put the stickers all over the place, until we got the instructions we had to put them in a certain place,” he said. “So I’m sure there will be some people that take advantage of having such an easy target to do whatever sticker graffiti they want to.” What do you think of Weezer paying tribute to Jorge’s “Lost” character? Despite Obama’s Lofty Words, Scientific Integrity Rules Are Lagging

Last March, President Obama promised he'd have a strategy for restoring scientific integrity to the federal government on hand by July 29. A full year later, federal agencies still have not received any new directives and some government scientists say that conditions have not improved noticeably since Obama took power. Obama made scientific integrity an issue in his presidential campaign, and his March 9, 2009 memo outlined a series of high-minded principles — advocating, for instance, for “transparency in the preparation, identification, and use of scientific and technological information in policymaking.” The memo also ordered John Holdren, the director of the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) to develop guidelines “designed to guarantee scientific integrity throughout the executive branch.” Obama gave Holdren 120 days. That deadline came and went. And Friday is its one-year anniversary. The White House won't explain what's holding things up. In a June 18 posting on the White House website, Holdren simply said that “the process has been more laborious and time-consuming than expected at the outset.” He set a new deadline, saying he would deliver “a high-quality product” to Obama “in the next few weeks.” (That was three weeks ago.) Holdren, however, also tried to argue that the directives weren't really a big deal. “There should not be any doubt that these principles have been in effect — that is, binding on all Executive departments and agencies — from the date of issue of the Memorandum on March 9, 2009,” he wrote. The hold-up, he insisted, only affected “recommendations to the President on what further instructions he might issue in augmentation of these principles in order to advance the goal of achieving the highest level of scientific integrity across the Executive Branch.” (Holdren's italics.) But that, people who follow the issue closely tell the Huffington Post, is baloney. “You can't enforce a principle, without a rule,” said Jeff Ruch, executive director of Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, a whistleblower group that he describes as “sort of a shelter for battered staff.” Ruch's group is calling attention to the one-year anniversary of the blown deadline in hopes of spurring action. Good Instructions for Preserving the Beach While Enjoying it

Image credit: Good It would make sense that people who love to visit the beach—who enjoy sunbathing, swimming, sand, and surf—would be the most inclined to protect and preserve the coast. Unfortunately, this is not always the case and beaches around the world suffer each year from the very people who make the effort to seek them out. According to Good , it doesn’t have to be this way…. Read the full story on TreeHugger
