Taylor Swift’s Video Director Insists She Did Not Copy Beyoncé

Source: Jeff Vespa / Getty Once again, one of Taylor Swift ‘s cohorts is coming to her rescue in the nick of time. Still shots of T. Swift’s soon-to-be-released video for “Look What You Made Me Do” were released online and the internet had some…observations. Many thought that everything from the wardrobe to the set seemed oddly similar to Beyoncé ‘s “Formation” video. This was obviously not a good look for Swift, who has often been accused of cultural appropriation and capitalizing on white victim-hood. Well tonight, Swift will premiere the entire video during the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night. So ahead of the big reveal, video director Joseph Kahn tweeted in her defense. “I’ve worked with Beyoncé a few times,” he wrote. “She’s an amazing person. The #LWYMMDvideo is not in her art space. Love and respect to Bey.” I've worked with Beyoncé a few times. She's an amazing person. The #LWYMMDvideo is not in her art space. Love and respect to Bey. — Joseph Kahn (@JosephKahn) August 26, 2017 Kahn, 44, has directed many of Swift’s videos for songs like “Bad Blood,” and “Blank Space,” and also worked with Beyoncé on Destiny’s Child’s “Say My Name” and “Jumpin’ Jumpin’” In all fairness, we’ll have to see the entire video to make a complete case for T. Swift being a copycat. But still, the memes from this Taylor Swift/Beyonce comparison will never stop being funny AF. Keri Hilson Is Feeling Like A ’10’ In ‘Pretty Girl Rock’ Video

But when Keri Hilson sings, “Don’t hate me ’cause I’m beautiful,” on her latest track, “Pretty Girl Rock,” she wants the ladies to sing along. ‘Love The Way You Lie’ Director Knew Eminem Video Would Be ‘Giant’

‘If I didn’t do this video, I should just quit pop videos,’ Joseph Kahn tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Eminem (file) Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Joseph Kahn is one of the biggest video directors in the world, but he didn’t get to where he is today by burying his head in the sand. So when he was approached about doing Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie” clip, he said yes, even though he was due to start shooting a feature film two weeks later. But it wasn’t only the big names that attracted him to the project … it was actually the fact that everything about the project reminded him of another video he’d directed: Britney Spears’ comeback single “Womanizer.” “It is like ‘Womanizer,’ ” Kahn told MTV News. “Part of the success in [the video industry] is to be smart enough to recognize when those opportunities are given, and, you know what? I think if I didn’t do this video, I should just quit pop videos, because it’s obviously a giant thing that was about to happen. You couldn’t get me away from this one.” So Kahn famously hammered out a treatment for the clip in one furious session and turned the video around at a breakneck pace. His hustle has already paid off, because “Love the Way You Lie” has quickly become one of the most talked-about videos in recent memory. And much like “Womanizer” did for Spears, its success has only added another chapter to Eminem’s rather remarkable comeback story, which sort of proves just how smart Kahn is. Though, the way he tells it, this one was pretty much a no-brainer, all the way. “I think that this is Eminem’s finest album … trust me, at the time, I was going to shoot my movie in about two weeks, so taking a week of my time away from my movie to do this is a huge commitment on my part,” Kahn said. “The only reason I did it [was] because the song was so amazing, and the album is so great, and Eminem is in such a great moment, and it was such an important topic to do. He’s dealing with these massive issues in such a brilliant, pop-y, artistic way, that, as a pop-video director, I cannot step away from this.” What’s your favorite Joseph Kahn-directed video? Maroon 5’s ‘Misery’ Video: Watch Behind-The-Scenes Footage Now!

Video premieres Thursday on MTV.com! By James Montgomery Maroon 5’s Adam Levine in “Misery” Photo: A&M/ Octone By now, you’re probably aware that Maroon 5’s new video, “Misery,” is a pretty action-packed affair, featuring frontman Adam Levine being tossed off of buildings, slapped around and dodging oncoming traffic. “We decided to focus on violence instead of sex this time around,” bassist Mickey Madden joked to MTV News last month. “We like to switch it up,” Levine added. “The next one will be about drugs.” We’ll just have to see about that one … but in the meantime, you can watch some exclusive, behind-the-scenes footage of the “Misery” clip right now, because MTV News was there in May, when the band shot the video. Maroon 5 worked with noted director Joseph Kahn — who’s helmed clips for the likes of 50 Cent, Britney Spears, Eminem, Muse and U2 — on the clip, which must have been an experience all its own. After all, not only has he worked with the biggest names in the biz, but he actually dreamed up the violent concept behind “Misery.” “The cool thing is, when Joseph wrote the treatment … after reading a few sentences, I thought it was really amazing,” Levine said. “He’s awesome. He’s really enthusiastic and creative and awesome and fun. We’ve never worked with him before and he’s a very big video director, so it’s great to finally get to do something with him.” “He’s put all of this together impressively, quickly and effectively,” Madden added. “It’s pretty awesome to see.” The full “Misery” video will premiere tomorrow on MTV.com, but you’re going to have to wait a bit longer to hear their new album, Hands All Over, which isn’t due until September. Chris Brown’s ‘I Can Transform Ya’ Moves Are ‘Mind-Blowing,’ Director Says

‘Here’s a guy who can literally do anything,’ Joseph Kahn raves to MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Joseph Khan Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images Chris Brown came back hard and fast in his video for “I Can Transform Ya.” The glossy, fast-paced clip, shot for two days last month in Hollywood, was the perfect chance for Joseph Kahn to work with the singer again after directing him in “Forever,” his upcoming “Crawl” clip and Ester Dean’s “Drop It Low.” “I met with Chris when we were doing the ‘Drop It Low’ video, and he played me a couple tracks off his new album, and he already had a pretty clear idea of what he wanted out of ‘Transform Ya,’ ” Kahn told MTV News. “And, obviously, him going in there and dancing and turning into cars and trucks is right up my alley.” Kahn said the video allowed the pair to display their love of all things “boy culture,” including fast cars and ninjas.
