But Ryan Reynolds’ Hal Jordan failed to gather as much green as observers may have hoped. By Ryan J. Downey Ryan Reynolds in “Green Lantern” Photo: Warner Bros. The big-screen debut of DC Comics’ “emerald knight” may have been #1 at the box-office over the weekend but it failed to gather as much green as most observers had hoped. “Green Lantern” generated an estimated $52.6 million in its debut weekend, less than the opening numbers for superhero flicks “Thor” and “X-Men: First Class” earlier this year. The heavily marketed potential franchise starter, which stars Ryan Reynolds, cost an estimated $200 million to produce. To put the numbers in perspective, fewer people saw “Green Lantern” on opening weekend than the film adaptations of lesser known superheroes like “Daredevil” and “Ghost Rider.” And critics were not kind to the film. “Green Lantern is a new primer on how not to make a comic book movie … flat FX, smirky acting, clunky writing and clueless direction,” Rolling Stone wrote. “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” was also something of a disappointment relative to previous Jim Carrey comedies. The film, based on the classic book of the same name, opened with $18.2 million, which wasn’t enough to beat last week’s #1 movie, “Super 8.” J.J. Abrams’ throwback homage to ’80s movies like “E.T.” earned another $21.2 million in its second weekend for a $72.7 million total. “X-Men: First Class,” was #4 over the weekend with $11.5 million for a $199.9 million total. While the comic flick’s numbers are lower than most of the movies in the mutant-hero franchise, the reboot/prequel hybrid has enjoyed the best critical response for an “X-Men” movie since “X2.” “The Hangover 2” rounded out the top five with $9.6 million for a $232.6 million total. And this weekend’s new releases include Disney/Pixar’s “Cars 2” and the Cameron Diaz comedy “Bad Teacher.” Michael Bay’s “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” follows on Wednesday, June 29. Paul Scheer, Nick Kroll and FX comedy co-stars hit the ground and turned up some of the most unbelievable festival stories. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Adam Murphy “The League” stars Jon Lajoie, Stephen Rannazzisi and Nick Kroll Photo: MTV News MANCHESTER, Tennessee — In theory, FX’s excellent original series “The League” is about fantasy football. But really, it’s about so much more: namely, the trials and tribulations of a group of friends, and their ongoing attempts to mess with each other’s lives. And that’s a sport that never goes out of season. During this past weekend’s Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival , four-fifths of the show’s stars — comedians Nick Kroll, Paul Scheer, Jon Lajoie and Stephen Rannazzisi — brought their mission to the masses, doing a pair of live sets in the fest’s Comedy Theatre … and those sets were heavy on the kind of good-natured provocation that has become the show’s calling card. So, in a lot of ways, it made sense to send the guys out into the fields of Bonnaroo, acre upon acre of shirtless dudes and blissed-out gals (some of whom also happen to be shirtless). In other words, it’s a place overflowing with folks who are in need of a good messing with. With the sun beating down on our heads, we boarded a golf cart and let the cameras roll, watching in near disbelief as the four comics chatted up guys in Speedos and capes, bandana-clad ladies, a slightly terrified child and exactly one gentleman who admitted to an ongoing affair with a married woman. The goal, as the guys would later tell us, was to create a sort of “Bonnaroo Taxi Cab Confessions ,” only, you know, in a golf cart. It was, to say the very least, a slightly amazing shoot (click the embedded video to see for yourself). So without further ado, we’re proud to present the cast of “The League” in all their comedic glory … running wild over the vast expanses of the ‘Roo, messing with complete strangers every step of the way. Before the first movie hits theaters on Friday, Reynolds and Blake Lively hint at sequel plots. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Ryan Reynolds in “Green Lantern” Photo: Warner Bros. Ryan Reynolds was still busy in a blue-screen studio bringing the starry magic of “Green Lantern” to life when Warner Bros. started moving ahead with plans for a sequel. That’s just the way things work in Hollywood. Now, a year after screenwriters were hired to pen the script for “Green Lantern 2,” much of the overall story seems to be in place, and as Reynolds told us recently, he’s “pretty aware” of what’s in store for his Hal Jordan, the test-pilot-turned-universe-protecting superhero. But with the first flick not hitting theaters until this Friday, the actor isn’t going to spill all the details. “I’m not throwing that out there at all,” he said. He did, nonetheless, toss us a few clues — most tantalizingly about what’s in store for Jordan and Sinestro, an ally who eventually becomes one of Jordan’s greatest enemies. “There’s such a rich history with this character, so you get really excited about the possibility,” Reynolds explained. “The inevitable war between Hal and Sinestro is something that will have to be dealt with in the second movie for sure, but there’s always subplots and a lot of other interesting things going on that are setting up a possible third film.” One subplot that co-star Blake Lively is hoping to see in future films concerns her character, Carol Ferris. According to DC Comics lore, Ferris evolves from Jordan’s on-again, off-again lover into a powerful being endowed with abilities similar to those that Jordan’s Green Lantern Corps power ring gives him. She becomes known as Star Sapphire, another of Jordan’s enemies. Lively, it seems, can’t wait to battle Reynolds — either in a sequel or even the third film that Reynolds discussed. Not that she went into great detail about the plots either. “Like the war between Star Sapphire and …,” Lively began, before trailing off. Reynolds quickly picked up. “Oh, I was talking about Pok
